Thank you! I feel in the earlier years I wasn't as afraid to create strong contrasts. But as I became "better", I started to become afraid of creating a bad artwork hence why the contrast is not as striking. If I look at it that way I think there's a beauty in the earlier artworks that I could learn from.

Attempted to do a little character design tonight! The description for the character was given by another artist friend. I could have spent more time rendering it, but I didn't want to work on it too much.

Oooooh, I really love this design so much. The only feedback I can give is I can't really tell what she's doing. I feel like she's hovering/floating but that might be the intentional pose so feel free to ignore me haha.

Ah yeah I didn't have real action or anything in mind for the drawing. Just a simple little character design. Making her stand on the ground would have been cooler instead of having her just float there like that though, I agree. I'll keep that in mind for future designs!

Master study of an artist I look up to, Dao Le Trong.

I initially went in trying to figure out how he draws the hair of the character, but ended up trying to study how he does everything. I could stay and render it more, but I feel like that isn't the purpose of a master study? If anyone here has a lot of experience with doing master studies, please leave me tips!! I would really appreciate it!

Did a little portrait today. This was a painting I did today without reference and I realize that I still have tons of trouble with facial features and color / lighting. Starting today I will start doing portrait studies through photographs and see if I can fix this problem.

Oh and also, I would like to add this here. Up close it looks fine, but when I zoom out, the hair looks like a big blob of paint. If someone could leave me tips on how to paint hair so it doesn't look weird when zoomed out like this, I would really appreciate it!

I love the complex lighting set up you have, the pink adds a nice contrast with the teal.

I think controlling the values and light source more might give you what you're looking for.
I did a paint-over to lower the values on the hair and focus the bounce light on the left more since it's closer to the source. I also reversed the lighting on the cheek and lower lid since the pink light seems to be coming from the bottom.

@LesleyCarol Thank you for the paintover!! Your paintover blends in more nicely and doesn't leave her bangs looking like three symmetrical pointy blobs when zoomed out like mine does xD

Thank you! And yes! You should definitely do master studies. I don't know if I'm doing them correctly tbh, but I do feel like I learned more about shading and colors through that one master study. I'll have to do more to see if I'm really understanding the task haha
