Lionel - Art School Journey - Daily Progress

Hi, my name is Lionel, and I am here starting as a beginner. I've been drawing here and there for the past year, but not to the point where I can say any of it was good, I have a basic set of knowledge, the things I've learned and know are very limited. I have been traditionally drawing, and the switch to digitally drawing was kind of weird at first, but I have gotten used to the tablet, and it feels much easier.

I am hoping to share my daily progress with you all, gaining more and more knowledge throughout the program and from criticism from the people reading this. I've very poorly started on Term 1 the other day, and I am hoping that by the end of this month to have been able to advance more and more each passing day. I am hoping and willing to complete the Terms one by one, no matter how slowly.. being able to master them before completing the program!

This type of thing will be very tricky for me to do, I have low confidence, self esteem, and tend to give up easily when no progress is being made. But seeing all the beautiful art from people who've finished the program, from artists online, and from the stories/comics/webtoons/mangas I like to read which have greatly inspired me to become a better artist. It has given me another reason on why I need to keep on trying. I hope you can push me to do better as well.

I truly hope you can help me along the way, your comments and motivation will only push me to go further, and be better than I was the previous day. So please help me achieve my goals and get good results! I will upload daily, so please be honest and truthful, I hope to see the others starting out, in the future hopefully in 2 years time finishing the program with me!

Action Lines Drawing 10 cylinder skeletons over reference - I think I need some help with the rib/stomach/pelvis shapes. Drawing 5 skeletons from reference - I have changed the way I drew the cylinders after watching Marcs video on simple anatomy, it took me a day to understand it at first. Once understood I tried applying it to the 4 on the right. Female Male Proportions 30 min Gesture Drawing - Any tips would be great

Great job Lionel! I'm look forward to seeing your progress!
For gesture drawing, it may be a good idea to research a little and watch someone that work in a way that makes sense to you. I've done gestures for some time, but i feel that i've only started to grow after i understood why i'm doing it and found a way to work that makes sense to me.

Thank you! I will do my best to make some progress everyday.
I have seen this video before, I should probably watch it again, but yeah I am going to do some research before I start the 30 minute gesture drawing assignment. I find myself struggling to apply some of the things I see and it's frustrating, but we can only do so much. Thank you, I'll do my best!

Gesture drawing is super hard for a beginner, don't stress and don't force it.
Someday it will just make click and everything connects together.
If you don't get it know you will get it someday when you least expect it, it's a weird mix of harmony and rhythm that makes gesture work.
So when in doubt just move on and come back later.

Welcome to the forums Lionel! Great work so far. I look forward to seeing more from you! One thing I would advise is to go a bit slower on your cylinder practice. Really focus on the cross sections. Go for 5-6 cross sections per limb and really focus in on getting those curves right. Draw the elipse all the way through the form and the angle of each elipse should be the same. It will take a lot of time to do at first, but this is a skill that continuously comes back. When I first started I remember my cylinder exercises took like 4-6 hours each so don't worry about quantity as much on those, go for the right curves. So far your progress has been fantastic! Keep it up!

That is better! but try drawing them through for each one in the middle as well, like this.

It may seem like a trivial exercise but this is going to keep coming back and back again. So if you can learn it now everything else will be easier (Especially heads) Making the good ellipses will be really hard at first. But its an essential skill for later constructions.

Day 8 - 4/10/22 - Term 1 - Figure Drawing
Drawing 10//10 cylinder skeletons over reference. - I completed the 5 left from day 7. I recommend to those seeing this to try and practice doing the whole ellipse in the cylinders, it helps with muscle memory, and for better control/accuracy staying in between lines as well.
