Some linework for my comic. Keeping each element a separate color keeps me from getting off track. It feels a little weird but I end up getting a lot more done. After I get done with the lines I throw in some very basic tone. Then I'll go over it and refine everything over the line layer. Still trying to work out how I want to do this. My goal is to get it to look something like the comic Carbon Grey only in black and white.
For some reason, I keep getting Commissions to draw mech suits or robots despite my portfolio having very little of that. I'm getting to enjoy it even if it's still outside my comfort zone. These are for a set of cards and there all based different factions in Warhammer 40K, something I know very little about but at the rate these commissions keep coming in I'll be an expert by the end of the year.
The finished second page.
A sketch for the third page.
A few more sketches of my Warhammer 40K commissions.
More progress on the commissions. I realized at this point that I hadn't taken the border of the cards into consideration so I'll have to adjust for the final cards.
Still need to do a final pass on this but I like the way this is looking so far
The other half of the commission project. Now I'm looking forward to finishing all of these.
A sketch for the fourth page. Really fun to work on this, it's nice to work on after doing commissions and Art School stuff
The first two of my six Warhammer commissions are finished, four to go.
A test comic for a project that ended up not happening due to the pandemic. The writer was paying for it all out of pocket so he decided to shelve the project for a while. A bummer because I liked working on this short and was looking forward to some of the stuff later in the script.
An almost compleated page 4 And the line work for page 5
The next two of the six Warhammer 40k commissions. It's been fun but I'm looking forward to doing something a bit different for a while
My last two pictures for the Warhammer commission. The ship was a real challenge for me because that's not the kind of thing that I draw that often. The background for that one was interesting because I used a bunch of different brushes that I don't normally use. For the planet, it was a stained paper and metal texture for the surface and a cloud brush for the atmosphere and the galaxy behind it. The stars was just a brush with a large spread and a small tip, thats way more brushes than I normally use but I liked the way that it came out
Another commission, this time of a giant corgi for a DnD group. I don't know much about how they got a giant corgi only that he's a very good boy.The eyes look a little dead in this version but I'm happy with the rest of the colors
Another commission this time of a dragonkin cleric on a temple. The client was happy with this so I'm moving on. I'm going to try to and use Blender to do the background just because I'm a bit rusty in that program.
The giant corgi is finished, I'm really happy with how this came out, particularly the colors.
That giant corgi looks DOPE, man! Very nice
I used the freeline settings in Blender to get all the linework set up. It was a pain but I can see it being really useful in the future. I feel okay about the colors, I'm glad the next part of ArtSchool has a class about color and light because I could use some help in that department. Overall though I'm happy with how this is moving along
For the most part, I like how this came out but I think I went too soft on some of the edges in the background and the lighting feels a bit off. Pretty sure I can adjust the lighting but I think those edges are just going to have to be soft.
Another commission this time of a persons Jedi character. It's more actiony than a lot of the other stuff I've been drawing so that was a very welcome change of pace.
I finished this commission. Still not happy with how soft the background is but pretty happy with everything else.
The flat colors for my Jedi image and the final image. Really happy with how this came out.
I've been picking at my comic between commissions so here's page 5 all finished and page 6 with the linework finished. I've noticed that I've moved away from trying to give it a very painterly look and moved into a more of a comic style shading. I think that if I painted every page I would have been retired before I finished.
The lines and finished tones for page 6. Still kind of playing around with how I want this to look but I think that I'm moving in a direction that I'm happy with and that is something that I can realistically achieve. One of the things that I want to tackle next is my panel composition. I don't think it's bad, it just lacks some sort of punch. I've been looking at a lot of manga for inspiration recently, they do some really great dynamic stuff with panel composition. And of course breaking out Making Comics by Scott McCloud, a book that I've had for over a decade and it shows
Might adjust the panel shape on those bottom two panels but one of the nice things about working digitally is that I can do that after I do the finished line work.
A commission for a client based on their character from the game Conan Exiles.
A recent commission for a thief/rogue character in a fantasy middle-east setting
Very nicely drawn!
