  • Thank you! I finally cleaned that up. Meanwhile started 3 more ..I have a habit of taking too long to finish a piece, then I lose interest in it and just start something else. I found 8 from recently i started and abandoned, that are decent enough to not delete, but not finished. There’s also been a number of drawings I felt I “outgrew” - became better before I finished them, and it would be easier to start from scratch than fix them. Anyone else thinking that?
  • Lady Death Fanart Collectible: Part 6 Polypaint and base Hi, it’s time to share with you another part of the process to create this fanart piece. Polypaint As this is my first collectible fanart I didn’t have previous experience with polypaint so I tried my best and played a bit with it.I wanted to give a ghostly and eerie look to Lady Death, she is beautiful and deadly, but at the end of the day she is a woman that died and was reborn at hell as an avenging spirit, that’s why I gave her skin tone a bluish very cold tone.As you will see I gave myself some creative freedom to deviate from the traditional color scheme that this characater has in comics and illustrations. To add a bit of sensuality by painting some freckles on the face and the chest. The dark nature of this character was the perfect excuse to gave her a kind of goth make up, very dark shadows around the eyes, blue lips and fingernails. I know that the original character includes sexy red lips but I wanted this girl to have a sexy but at the same time creepy look, that’s why we can see some thin veins emanating from her eyes. The biggest chromatic change I did for this character is at the hair. Lady Death has a characteristic white weavy hair but in my fanart I decided to gave her a very saturated blue color. The reason behind this wasn’t only an aesthetic choice. I want that the face area strongly pulls the attention of the viewer so this area needed a stronger contrast. Another reason is that I want her to have a more modern look, as I mentioned before, I’m strongly attracted to women with goth/punk look. I gave myself half an hour or more to analyse the work of experienced sculptors that create collectibles and I discovered that the use of darker values on the skin is often applied to create a greater sense of volume and three-dimensionality. I found that areas with heavy ambient occlusion are the perfect places to paint with darker colors in order to increase the separation between different forms. Even though she has a bluish skin tone, I used a bit of warmer hues in areas that, in real life, tend to go towards red and pink, this is very obvious in the nose, cheeks, and knuckles. Thinking with a logical mind it’s completely absurd to have warmer tones on the body of a zombie like creature but I didn’t want to limit myself by using only blue tones, it looks boring and artificial. In real life these colors are created by blood vessels in areas where the skin is very thin. ** Scythe **for her weapon I applied a cool gray with some warmer variations, this color scheme is influenced by the work of H.R giger. Base I’d like to talk about the design for the base which, to be honest, I forgot to develop along with the character. My main idea with the base is to show that Lady Death inhabits a very sterile and arid land, at the end of the day she is at hell. You can see a that she walks over dirt and rocks, a sign that she’s surrounded by death and loneliness. As part of the landscape we can see some bones and skulls to reinforce the idea of lack of living creatures, yet we can see three hands that try to reach her legs. This hands represent that all creatures are subordinated to her power and seek an evil blessing with a simple touch of the princess of the damned.1- The hand with skin burns represents the souls of those who are newcomers to hell, tortured souls that suffer for the sins comitted on earth.2- The hand with greenish rotten skin and pustules is the reminder of the decay that has infected the souls of those who have been trapped and have forgotten their humanity3- Last but not least, the hand of a demon shows that even dark creatures and entities bow before her presence. The cherry on the top, at least in my vision, are the simese twins that emerge from the ground, this malevolent creatures remind us that in hell there’s only perversion and any trace of innocence is lost. Thanks for reading till this pointI’m really happy to be very close to finish this creative journey, last but not least it’s mandatory to talk about splitting the sculpture in several pieces to be printed, this will be my last entry before showing the final rendered images. See yaMay Zbrush be with you

It feels really nice I hope it stays this way A portrait of old dude. It's the same character I posted a while ago. Inspired by Bayard Wu work. At first I thought of him as a bear but I named him Fenrir and I think wolf suits him better. Eye gave me a bit of hard time but I think it is fine now. I focused on face and forgot about area below. The way I draw hair clashes with greying hair. I had the same problem while doing Lohse's white hair. Does it looks like it is greying here? I love how desaturated red looks blue there. I keep lying to myself that I will use different color scheme but It all comes down to this blue and yellowish one it is just flipped this time Have a great day!

Here's today's practise. I think the spheres with lighter base value still look kinda wrong, but I am pretty happy with the darker ones! (like the first and last of the second row  )
Also tried to lighten the bounce lights, but I am not where I want to be yet...
Have a great day everyone!

And in addition to that I am currently working on a "personal" piece where I tried to implement what I am currently learning into sth more creative.
So I thought where would I be able to draw a lot of spheres? Okay yeah, a billiard table. But I wanted the balls to be lit from different angles, so I though: the solar system! Nice slap some bounce light on, bcs that stuff apparently doesnt exist in outer space (because science  ) so I ended up with an orrery!
Here's the current progress. I am not yet sure if all balls are correctly shaded, so I'd be very happy about some quick feedback from your end, everyone!

This looks really cool and believable!
I'd say go darker on the shadows and blend more in the middle so it doesn't jump too sudden from dark to light.
Can't wait to see this finished.

Thank you for the feedback Lesley!
Here is the new version:

I don't quite know how to go on with this piece. I guess I have to make up my mind first about what is actually around the Orrery in order to do stuff like bounce lights and also attempting to render the materials.
Maybe I should phrase my question like that: When I have practised the stuff I intended to practise with a practise piece, should I keep going (even though that would mean "wasting" a lot of time with other things like rendering materials), or should I call it a day and go on to the next practise piece?
Have a great weekend, everyone!

Unless you want to study materials I would just move on until you get to the material section of the course.
If it were me I'd go back to portraits and start learning how to apply the blending techniques to the face. Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't you start doing shading and value studies a month ago to start rendering the face? I would start trying to shade each facial feature and do mini challenges like 5 a day or something. Or you could try lighting the Asaro head based on moods like "dramatic" or "lonely" etc to make it interesting. You've made a lot of progress with shading but outside looking in it seems like you're diving into a tangent since you started off wanting to shade better but now you're considering rending materials.

Haha you are definetly right, Lesley, I am getting a little distracted with the value studies
I actually started working on shading the human nose (along with Istebraks tutorial), but I also started my new job this monday and I am still struggling with gathering the concentration to do my art practise  I hope I'll adapt soon, so I can push further.
Until then, I'll keep doing the form studies as they have become a little easier by now...
Thank you so much for your comment!

Here is today's practise session. I am not really sure how to really practise shading the nose. It seems so complex and working from foto reference is quite tough as all the shading is so soft
How do you practise shading/constructing facial features?

I are you going for an exact replica? These look a lot darker than the references.
Just asking so I can give better feedback.

I just used them to construct the nose itself and then I tried to do my own light setup like in my form studies.
I just wanted to get something done last week, work has been really tedious and I couldnt concentrate.

Ah okay, that makes sense.

For me I usually study everything as it is so I can understand the forms and nuances for the feature. Then I'll do one or two on my own to see if I can make it fit with the others.

I think what you're doing is good practice too. It may be helpful to do one or two just like the reference to get a better idea of the plane changes and then change the lighting for a few others. On the ones you did, the the wings of the nose aren't as defined and the shapes are a little off. I think you did well with choosing the the correct values.

I just noticed this, but have you done any organic form studies? It might help to do those as a warm up since facial features are more organic.

Hope this helps!

Thank you for the feedback, Lesley. Apart from the spheres, I haven't done any organic form studies yet, but good point, I'll go to do those first and then continue on with facial features. Maybe that ends up being a little less frustrating

Did another form study today mixing in organic and geometric forms. Organic forms are really tough as I feel like I still lack the brushmanship with the soft brush, its super hard to control it and i often end up with hard edges which I have to soften with the smudge tool afterwards.
Also still a little unsure about my values in general. Often the core shadow of an object appears as if it had a totally different base color

And here is today's form study. Took about 2.5-3 hours
I especially enjoyed adding the cracks and details in the end
There is one question I have: I noticed in the bottom right form I have a very strong bounce light coming from the plane where the cast shadow lands. Is it even possible to have bounce light from a plane that has a drop shadow on it?

I wish you all a great weekend!

Here is todays organic form study.
Way better than last time, I still have a lot of things to work on

Have a great day everyone

You got some nice blending between the values. These are really looking wonderful. Keep it up!

Thank you so much for the kind words, @afoster1138!
Here is today's practise:

Have a great day, everyone!

Here is the last two day's practise. I wanted to see where my current shading skill is after practising all these form studies. I guess I have quite a long way ahead, though my form studies look pretty okay, the human face is so complex that I still got quite overwhelmed and tended to smudge way too much so it looks very muddy. But nevertheless, its a milestone I can use to compare my progress in the future

Have a great day!

HI mau! Good job on the studies!

I think all you have to do is to just go darker with shadows try to do the entire grayscale from white to dark. I'm not an expert but from my very limited experience shading is all about grayscale

You could if you already haven't already try to study the planes of the face alongside doing form studies. I'm not sure if Marc teaches that or not but I spent some time studying the planes of the face and it really helped me identify where the geometric forms of the face are and allows me to shade the face a lot easier. It also helps you understand how to better light a face without ref even though I still use it to determine where the soft and hard transitions are located. Great study overall though keep up the good work

Whew its been a while! Here is a personal piece I did a while ago, which I finished just now!
Been quite busy lately (preparing for another exciting art related adventure :wink: ) so I am really happy that I finished this piece. Pokemon was an elemental part of my childhood and making fanart is always a cool thing for me
Have a great day!

Awesome work mau,
I really like the Regice you've painted & the scenery you've created captures it really well. What pokemon is that by the trainer? The silhouette reminds me of an Azumarill. Either way i really like it

Thank you so much for the kind words, @OpaqueApple!
Haha yeah that is the big question and I must admit, I didnt give it much thought. I had a pikatchu in mind, but you are right it could be a Azumarill or a very small version of Totoro :joy:

Hi! Great job so far but I think that the sides are too dark

the face does have mostly soft transitions so I think you did a good job on keeping it soft while also showing where the planes transition into each other while keeping the places that need to be sharp sharp

16 days later

Quick update, started Istebrak's 14 Day Portrait challenge. Here's day two. A lot of stuff wrong with the eye area and the fact that it should be a female face doesn't make it better
Still, it's an okay start.

love how soft the face transitions look I think you did a good job

Thank you so much for your kind words, @Kosmonaut!
Here is Day 3 of the Challenge, made her a lot more feminine and worked on the eyes!

These are looking great @mau.wamp!!!
I don't see line art so does that mean you are painting those from scratch? Super awesome!
