  • Thank you! I finally cleaned that up. Meanwhile started 3 more ..I have a habit of taking too long to finish a piece, then I lose interest in it and just start something else. I found 8 from recently i started and abandoned, that are decent enough to not delete, but not finished. There’s also been a number of drawings I felt I “outgrew” - became better before I finished them, and it would be easier to start from scratch than fix them. Anyone else thinking that?
  • Lady Death Fanart Collectible: Part 6 Polypaint and base Hi, it’s time to share with you another part of the process to create this fanart piece. Polypaint As this is my first collectible fanart I didn’t have previous experience with polypaint so I tried my best and played a bit with it.I wanted to give a ghostly and eerie look to Lady Death, she is beautiful and deadly, but at the end of the day she is a woman that died and was reborn at hell as an avenging spirit, that’s why I gave her skin tone a bluish very cold tone.As you will see I gave myself some creative freedom to deviate from the traditional color scheme that this characater has in comics and illustrations. To add a bit of sensuality by painting some freckles on the face and the chest. The dark nature of this character was the perfect excuse to gave her a kind of goth make up, very dark shadows around the eyes, blue lips and fingernails. I know that the original character includes sexy red lips but I wanted this girl to have a sexy but at the same time creepy look, that’s why we can see some thin veins emanating from her eyes. The biggest chromatic change I did for this character is at the hair. Lady Death has a characteristic white weavy hair but in my fanart I decided to gave her a very saturated blue color. The reason behind this wasn’t only an aesthetic choice. I want that the face area strongly pulls the attention of the viewer so this area needed a stronger contrast. Another reason is that I want her to have a more modern look, as I mentioned before, I’m strongly attracted to women with goth/punk look. I gave myself half an hour or more to analyse the work of experienced sculptors that create collectibles and I discovered that the use of darker values on the skin is often applied to create a greater sense of volume and three-dimensionality. I found that areas with heavy ambient occlusion are the perfect places to paint with darker colors in order to increase the separation between different forms. Even though she has a bluish skin tone, I used a bit of warmer hues in areas that, in real life, tend to go towards red and pink, this is very obvious in the nose, cheeks, and knuckles. Thinking with a logical mind it’s completely absurd to have warmer tones on the body of a zombie like creature but I didn’t want to limit myself by using only blue tones, it looks boring and artificial. In real life these colors are created by blood vessels in areas where the skin is very thin. ** Scythe **for her weapon I applied a cool gray with some warmer variations, this color scheme is influenced by the work of H.R giger. Base I’d like to talk about the design for the base which, to be honest, I forgot to develop along with the character. My main idea with the base is to show that Lady Death inhabits a very sterile and arid land, at the end of the day she is at hell. You can see a that she walks over dirt and rocks, a sign that she’s surrounded by death and loneliness. As part of the landscape we can see some bones and skulls to reinforce the idea of lack of living creatures, yet we can see three hands that try to reach her legs. This hands represent that all creatures are subordinated to her power and seek an evil blessing with a simple touch of the princess of the damned.1- The hand with skin burns represents the souls of those who are newcomers to hell, tortured souls that suffer for the sins comitted on earth.2- The hand with greenish rotten skin and pustules is the reminder of the decay that has infected the souls of those who have been trapped and have forgotten their humanity3- Last but not least, the hand of a demon shows that even dark creatures and entities bow before her presence. The cherry on the top, at least in my vision, are the simese twins that emerge from the ground, this malevolent creatures remind us that in hell there’s only perversion and any trace of innocence is lost. Thanks for reading till this pointI’m really happy to be very close to finish this creative journey, last but not least it’s mandatory to talk about splitting the sculpture in several pieces to be printed, this will be my last entry before showing the final rendered images. See yaMay Zbrush be with you

At first I thought of him as a bear but I named him Fenrir and I think wolf suits him better. Eye gave me a bit of hard time but I think it is fine now. I focused on face and forgot about area below. The way I draw hair clashes with greying hair. I had the same problem while doing Lohse's white hair. Does it looks like it is greying here? I love how desaturated red looks blue there. I keep lying to myself that I will use different color scheme but It all comes down to this blue and yellowish one it is just flipped this time Have a great day!

Hello everyone!
I am Mau and I am a student. Creating art has never really appealed to me until September last year. My interests changed and I got into world building. That led me to Marc's Chroma island series, which really inspired me to create something on my own.
(Creating was always a thing for me, I created some cool cosplays here and there...)

So last year in October, I joined Artschool as a complete noob (as I still am: )). I made some good progress, but some days ago, I decided to get my art practise to the next level (also because of all the time I have on my hands due to the lockdown).
I thought of a goal that would be interesting to pursue and made a plan to achieve said goal.
My goal is to participate in 2020s Art War. So I'll have to learn new stuff and improve my current skills A LOT! : )
I'd be really happy to recieve some feedback from you guys, so that I can really improve my art.
I don't know if I can really contribute to this community as I just started my journey, however I have a good knowledge of anatomy (I am a student of physical therapy), maybe that can help...
I am very happy to get the opportunity to learn and grow with this community of likeminds! : )
See you in the forum!

Here is a study I did on 13th of April 2020. So you can see where I am currently at. (Reference: https://www.artstation.com/guweiz)

Hey @mau.wamp

Welcome aboard!
So nice to see you have a structured plan on how to go and track your progress with a final goal in mind. That you will definitely help and drive you to get there.

That's already a good piece you have there. Keep the updates coming as you progress 👍

Cheers!

Today's session...

Please feel free to give some feedback!

Hey Mau!

I think it might be a good idea for you to repeat the proportions chart a couple times.

The proportions are in line with what Marc was teaching, but I think it would be beneficial to you. It will help you get used to line making as well as how to make an image symmetrical via freehand.

A little tip I have for you to get symmetrical shapes when working with a grid is to first draw one side in one stroke and then draw the other side. This allows for clearer lines, and if one side isn't so good, you only have to redo half of it.

Keep working hard and you'll get there!! Good luck!

Hey Mau,

Nice work! Keep it up and thanks for the updates.

Once thing that helped me out a lot was to use a set of brushes from Marc (don’t know if they are still available for free (or with a big discount) or not.
I feel like they are more smooth and hence more “forgiving” when we do multiple stroked to get things right, making the piece look better (and less “sketchy/hairy”).

It’s good advice to go through these exercises a few more times to get the hang of it.
If I may give some feedback:
In one of the cylinder exercises (where the guy is laying down on a press holding some weights), the legs and then knees appear to be facing the camera a lot, but both the beginning and the end of the cylinders look a bit flat (which removes the volume from the form).

It’s also good to get to a point where you can just copy from reference instead of tracing on top of it (I’m still doing that).

Other than that keep up the good work! I love how you are focusing on the practice of the exercises themselves (like the proportions one).

Cheers,

A Study I did today. I decided to not do it digitally as I spend so much time on my computer due to the online classes...
So here we go, I tried the measuring techniques Mark shows in Nude Figure Drawing. I also shaded it, but the main focus was on getting the Pose and proportions right.
Please feel free to share some feedback.

Hey @mau.wamp

How was it for you doing this exercise? And especially with doing this in a traditional manner, how was to fix any errors and stuff like that?

I'm on this same exercise and progressing slowly... but steady :stuck_out_tongue:

If I may, one thing I notice is that on your piece, the character seems to have his center a bit tilted to the right, with a feeling that might fall if he keeps this stance. What do you think?

Cheers

Hey Danilo!
I must say that doing this exercise in a traditional manner is a lot easier for me than doing it digitally.
When doing this digitally I create an additional layer with a reference line that i can move around freely. This is a little tedious as I always have to transform, rotate and move this line.
Traditionally is a lot faster in that respect, as I can just use my pencil as a reference...
For me, drawing the figure is faster and more efficient with pen and paper, but I think if you really want to improve upon this exercise, digitally might be better, as correcting your drawing is a lot easier (by just dragging your work onto the reference image).
But this has its own downsides and benefits:
- its fast and efficient which is good
- but just dragging it onto the reference might hinder you in developing the skill of finding your mistakes by just looking at stuff like empty space, flowing lines, vertical/horizontal lines and the overall rough shape of the reference.

I hope that helps
And thanks for your feedback, it‘s true, his stance doesnt seem stable at all

Hey @mau.wamp,

Thanks for the reply. It makes a lot of sense. And I would have to agree with you. In the traditional space, it seems more "natural" to do this kind of thing.

I've been trying to mix both experiences in the digital space. Instead of using the line, I'm also using a pencil to find the spots and mark them on the drawing right next to it, especially to "train the eye" in finding those reference points.

Thanks again!

14 days later

According to my plan!
Term 1 ends today and I'll start Term 2 (for 6weeks).
The goal is to go through the Art school curriculum in cycles. I want to study the first 5-6 assignement till December so I'll have at least some basic skills in order to participate in Art War this year.
The plan is, not to pracise one term for tool long, but to mix it up. That way (I think) I can progressively improve my skills while not getting bored working on e.g. Term 1 for a year until I am totally satisfied with my results, if that makes sense

Limiting my time spent on a Term hopefully also makes me manage my time better and work on the basic skills more effectively without getting too attached to minor details...
What do you think about this approach? Especially with regards to the goal I have?

So here is my first assignement for Term 2 - Photoshop 2
For this cycle I'll concentrate on the stuff digital artists use, because I think that this will help me the most for Art War, graphics design and photo editing will be worked on in the next cycle probably.

Hey guys!
Here is my first 3-point perspective assignement I am actually happy with
I know the coloring is crap and the shading is non-existent, but it's better than just a white canvas with som black lines on it...
I found it especially hard to do the first few lines, placing the vanishing points and to determine the rough shape of the wall...
the more detailed it gets, the easier (not better  ) it becomes somehow.
What do you think?
Any tips you can give or any mistakes you found?
