Character Design assignments 2 & 3
Initially when watching the Character design lecture I thought the hero shape sounded silly and not very helpful but now that I have done it I can see why it can help with character design.
This is the first task I have done in this course which gives a little more freeform as opposed to something just like "Draw a page of cylinders" so I definitely found this more difficult.
In the lecture Marc talks about picking a theme for your character which I did not really do when making my hero shape so I really struggled when creating it. I just looked at some references I found interesting and slapped some shapes together if I am being honest.
Silhouette sheets
You can see the hero shape I made at the top of each page of silhouettes. I still did not have a concrete Idea of what kind of character I wanted to do for this assigment, and I still did not have a theme or story really. In my head I was just thinking of a priestess/cultist type character who is a part of some kind of organisation that is obsessed with artifacts. Anything deeper than that, I can't give you as I don't know. Creating stories and stuff like that is very out of my comfort zone to be honest.
On a side note - if anyone knows what brush Marc used in the Character design video to do his silhouttes please let me know : ) Seems like a fun brush to use for this task but I just used a hard round brush with no opacity.
I was surprised that I actually quite enjoyed making silhouttes even though I felt like I had no idea what i was doing. When I do this next I will be sure to have a more detailed theme etc before I start the process.
Character design
I picked one of the silhouttes I did on my last page. I definitely could have spent a lot more time on this but I wanted to move on with the course. I feel like my rendering is very weak, I cant remember if there is more content later in the course to do with rendering/shading but looking forward to it if there is.
This was the first time I have ever tried rendering with a lasso tool with a soft brush. I am not happy with the colour palette i went with as it feels dull. Next time I will think more about colour harmonies.
I really struggled with gradient maps in clip studio. I think this is because my value control in grayscale shading was inconsistent and i think my values tend to be "squished" avoiding darker shades of grey.
Anyway, I think I am sounding overly negative here. For my first character design ever, I am fairly happy with it. I have a lot to learn from it.

Character design Process
Here is my process for the character design:
