Hi everyone, I am a beginner artist who started the art school journey on 04/08/24. I have never tried digital art before and have limited-ish experience traditionally. I used to doodle a lot years ago at school but nothing crazy (I've never studied art).

I have always wanted to improve my drawing however I like to have a structured path to follow so felt like this course was the best choice for me. Hopefully you and I will be able to see progress as I make my way through the course content.

I am not super sure what my end goal is but I know I enjoy illustration and want to get good at it and I am enjoying the process. I have just finished term 2 so thought I would post everything I have done so far and will continue to post as I (slowly) move through the course.

I am using CLIP STUDIO PAINT and a Wacom One 13 which a friend has lent me.

TERM 1

Photoshop (CLIP STUDIO) for Digital Production 1

I didnt spend super long on these as I am not very interested in Image adjustments etc and I am more interested in improving my drawing ability.

I only did the first part of this assignment as I wanted to get on to the illustration assignments as I am not very interested in image manipulation etc at the moment

This section wont be as organised and chronological as the last section as my folder structure was horrible when I did this. I usually did the whole assignment sheet in one sitting but will present it here differently.

Measuring

To be honest I really didnt like using the measuring tools

Perspective

I've never studied perspective so i found this quite interesting. Although I found measuring things out and drawing guide lines tedious. I definitely prefer a more intuitive approach but definitely need to get more confident before doing this all in my head.

Here is my first time drawing shapes in perspective without guidelines (only the horizon line)

Here is me checking how well I did:

Atleast this looks like my room but I am not overly happy with it. Didnt spend too much time on it and shading is very new to me

I enjoyed Term 2 a lot more than term 1 and am very eager to move continue forward with the course

I skipped Photoshop 2 - Assignments A as it didnt interest me too much however I am sure I will pass back and do it at some point

I really didnt like how this one came out. Feel like I should have planned it a little more rather than just randomly slapping stuff in. Definitely need to get better at identifying things I like in what I create though

Anatomy 1

I started actually drawing along with the lectures here - not sure why it took me this long. Realised I have been wasting a lot of time just staring at the screen mindlessly for a couple hours at a time. Drawing along is also helping me absorb the info in the lectures.

Volumes

I struggled with this, I find it very difficult to manipulate the volumes in perspective and make them interact with each other. Should I be drawing guide lines for every single thing I draw in this assignment? Definitely want/need to keep practicing this. Anyway, I thought I would include a few of my draw alongs from the lectures/

The head

I was very surprised with how this went. Im particularly happy with my eye studies (not sure how I drew those to be honest) and least happy with the mouth's. For the mouths I can see there are a lot of fine details, its like I can perceive them but have no idea how to draw or represent them.

For the head studies I also followed some of Sinix Design's anatomy tutorials and found some success combining their methods with the courses methods.

And that is everything I have done so far. Not sure if i should have split this up into several posts but here we are. I've enjoyed the process so far and think I will try one more full portrait before starting term 3. Not sure if there is visible progress here but I think what I will do going forward is: whenever I finish a terms assignments I will go back and do all the other assignments from before again before moving onto another term, I think this should hopefully give me some good millage while also - hopefully - make seeing improvement easier.

The dates I have included are not super accurate and does not mean the work under it took only that day to complete, its just the day I started working on that piece. You may have noticed there are some pretty big gaps, I definitely want to work on getting more consistent at doing this every day although some of the gaps can be explained by me doing a 3D hardsurface modelling course at the same time - which I am only half way through at the moment.

Thanks to anyone who got this far. Any feedback/criticism is greatly appreciated and I am looking forward to learning/sharing more

Another full head practice

Struggled with this one a bit more than the previous male head that I did above. Finding putting that initial circle down for the heads quite difficult. Not really sure where to place it, feels like I am doing it randomly at the moment and needing to make lots of adjustments to it as I go - which I feel almost makes my initial circle pointless. Not too sure what I am doing with rendering at the moment, just throwing on values at this point but am fairly happy with how its turning out as I am not spending super long on these.

Starting Term 3 now but definitely will come back to all of this, looking forward to trying this with heads at different angles. I want to get to the point where I can use a reference from one angle and draw it accurately from another.

Any advice or criticism about any of the work I've done so far is appreciated : )

Looking good mate! Welcome aboard
As for placement, if going for accuracy I'd say block in first, no need to get the circle perfect from the get go, I recommend watching a video from Proko or Stephen Bauman on how they do their block ins, lots of good insight, it's definitely the part of the portrait I take the most time on, I find the more relaxed and analytical I get at that part the better the outcome, also, it makes everything else much easier. It's way more fun to focus on rendering that way, else, at least in digital, I end up smudging way too much til I get it right or using some liquify filter XD which I always feel is like cheating haha

Anyhow, keep at it!

I will take a look at the videos you suggested when I go to do another head study/drawing : )
I agree with you that being more relaxed and analytical leads to a better outcome

Term 3

Clothed Figure Drawing

Painting Reference photos

So I have never tried to draw clothes before and found this quite challenging.

I struggled using a soft brush for some reason, I think one of the main reasons was that I wasn't thinking properly about the values I put on the page. When copying the references I stopped thinking about the folds/cloth in 3D and "blindly" put values down on the page.

Also, doing these made me realise how little anatomy knowledge I have lol. So it may have been better for me to start with Anatomy_2 but I am now looking forward to doing this lecture next.

I feel like I didnt fully understand what I was doing and I was unhappy with the results from my first two attempts above. So, I watched this YouTube video and I took notes and practiced what was mentioned:

Here I tried to combine the content from the lecture and the things I learned from the video but so far whenever I try and use the blend brush I hate the way it looks. I think I need a better understanding of what lines/values to keep a hard edge on and where to blend. I definitely want to practice this more.

This one was my favourite, not sure why

I spent about two seconds on the "human" part of this drawing but looking back at this I definitely need to experiment with blending more just like I mentioned above.

Painting clothes on a naked subject

For these I used no reference or used a reference at a different angle of the subject to stop myself mindlessly copying and force myself to learn. Definitely want to study this more as - similarly to the first part of this assignment - I stopped thinking about the folds/cloth in 3D and "blindly" put values down on the page which gave me results which I did not like.

I have lightly censored my ref images here, not sure if its necessary in these forums

Definitely found it more difficult drawing dresses and cloaks. Not sure if I am trying too much too soon here but my thinking was that trying something difficult/challenging fairly above my current skill level is a good way to learn quickly. If someone could let me know what they think about this I would be interested to hear.

Any feedback and critique on anything I have posted so far is appreciated
