Study (copy) a fully dressed character painting from an artist/show you like

I am happy with the outcome here, I did lose motivation in some parts and lazily slapped values down but overall I think I did a good job. Although I feel like when doing these artist/show copies/studies I am not learning a massive amount. Next time I do a study like this I want to find an artist who I like who has done a speedpaint (or something similar so I can follow along). I would like to do this because i think it would help me learn the artists process from start to finish which I can then use and apply to future works. Whereas when I am just looking at the finished piece and copying from that, I dont think I am learning a whole lot as I am just copying it as best I can with what I currently know.

The muscles look good. And you're right, the deltoids do look small. I think you can adjust the size, and that's about it.

The folds look okay. If you think it's not good, you could add some more detail around the sleeves.

The study looks good. The details on her coat look pretty challenging. It seems that you learned how to render metals, so that's something

I think only through copying, I would definitely struggle to do this on my own piece without a reference but I am glad that I captured it well : )

Term 4 - Block 1

I have now made it past where I made it up to the first time since I started the course and it feels good. The tasks I completed here are listed below. I ended up doing two artists studies as well - which were not in the block - as I wanted pieces I could use for the Colour and Light Theory assignments.

I did not find the Film & Game production overview lecture overly useful but that is probably because I am pursuing getting better at art/illustration etc. as a hobby. I can see it being useful for others though.

I enjoyed the colour theory lecture and tasks.

Artist Study

Here I did a study of one of Kyoung Hwan Kim's pieces so that I could use it for some Colour Harmony studies.

This time I approached it differently, usually I put my references on my drawing tablet in clip studio alongside where I am drawing and I draw at the same scale as the ref. This time I had it up on my monitor while I drew on my tablet. When the reference was alongside the drawing I would get obsessed with making sure all the lines are at the exact same scale with perfect proportions - almost felt like tracing even though it wasnt. While the result this time is definitely not as close to the reference as when I did the first approach, I found it a lot more fun and felt like I learned more.

Gesture drawing (5min poses)

I used posemaniacs for these studies. I enjoyed using it for my 2 minute studies however this time for the 5 minute ones I was not a massive fan. I feel like I struggled with this batch so that is probably why I enjoyed it less.

Artist Study

Here I did a study of a piece by panelperday so that I could use it when I do Color and Light Theory 1 assignment 2.

I initially was quite loose with the linework as I was planning on going over it and cleaning it up but by the end I thought it was good enough and left it as it is.

Color and Light Theory 1 assignment 2

I really struggle to identify what Colour Harmonies are used in pieces without plugging it into Adobes color wheel. And even then I sometimes am not competely sure. This is my first time doing this and I am still very unfamiliar with it all so I can see it improving over time.

Nice work on the gesture drawings.
Kyoung Hwan Kim's artwork is pretty impressive. panelperday's medieval art is interesting.
Your color studies are very impressive. Plugging it into Adobe sounds like a good idea. Good work.

Thank you! I am glad that I enjoy working on gesture now, I am hoping all my current anatomy studies and studies to come will help me represent poses more interestingly and dynamically on the page. Time will tell. It always keeps me motivated seeing other people comment, so thank you : )

I would like to take credit for this but I just copied the idea off of Marc in the Term 4 Colour and Light 1 lecture. While I found it really helpful, I find it near impossible to guess colour harmonies in my head without using it - apart from the more obvious ones like complimentary, monochromatic and split complimentary. Guessing that will come with more practice and more time using colour as I have used it very little so far.

Term 4 - Block 2

Here are the tasks/assignments I compelted this block : )

I had a lot of fun in this one. This is the first time since restarting the course where I am reaching new content so I am watching the new lectures etc and feel like I am learning a lot which is fun.

I have felt that I have continually struggled with colour, rendering and arm anatomy throughout the course so far so this is a block which I looked forward to completing.

Anatomy 3 assignment 1 - Highlight all upper body muscles over reference photos

There was a lot of content to absord in the Term 4 Anatomy 3 - Upper lecture but I found that this was a good task to consolidate it all. I realise now I focused on forward facing torsos a lot more than the back here but I will just compensate with doing it the other way around in the future.

I still struggle a bit with the serratus and when watching the lectures the arm anatomy seemed simple enough but when it came to highlighting the muscles I realised it was more difficult than it looked. Similarly to last time - when I just did this for the torso - I think that when it comes to drawing the muscles over a skeleton assignment, it will greatly help with my understanding of what I have learnt here : )

Color and Light Theory 1 assignment 3

So for this I followed along with the Term 4 - Colour and Light 1 lecture for the grayscale forms then I added my own colour ones in.

Looking at this now the shadow for the purple "U" shaped rectangle looks a little off and maybe should be coming down the page a bit more? Hard to tell.

Color and Light Theory 1 assignment 4 - Analysing Colour Harmonies

I know that Color and Light Theory 1 assignment 4 asks us to just generally pay attention to colour in life etc and try to spot colour harmonies but I think when I am walking around I am zoned out 85% of the time, so I altered the assignment a bit to look at colour harmonies of other artsits works.

I am still relying heavily on adobe color for these assignments:

I need to try harder in the future to analyse the colour harmonies in my head first before inputting it to adobe color to check my work.

Study (copy) the stylized upper body anatomy of 5 characters from professional artists/shows/games you like

I had a lot of fun doing this assignment : )

I decided to take it further and have split my page down in 3 parts. The left being the reference and the middle being a linework copy of that reference. Then (the added part) the right being me trying to apply that style to a study of a reference in a different pose.

I am very happy I have stopped trying to copy references 1:1 and am more focused now attempting to understand what the artist is actually doing with their form and linework etc etc. Keeping the reference off of my drawing surface and on another screen forces me to spend more time looking and understanding the reference rather than just copying the shape and direction of individual lines one at a time at the same scale. I feel like I am learning a lot more this way.

Anyway, I think I did quite well here, with my favourite being the 4th sheet : )

Wow, this exercise looks really fun! I think you really nailed Jun, maybe add some more super black accents
Ognjen reminds me of bridgman, super blocky and constructive yet pleasently dynamic
Rution I think for your piece needed more angles, more triangles, less squary-ness
