Today I will take a break. I cannot go past warm up sketches so I will leave it.
I finished reading Gurney's Color and Light book. It's been waiting almost a year... Very informative I will have to go through it one more time probably with notes

Great work! The color pallet employed in your latest piece does a really good job of attracting the viewer's eyes toward that of the character. The colors have just the right amount of saturation and the contrast is well balanced. Maybe the painting could be exposed a little more at the centre; nevertheless, it is clear that the amount of detail increases as your approach the character's face and vice versa. Although you may feel that you are overusing the "circle" that you add to the background of your paintings, I really feel this is your best application of it yet. It defines the character's head construction by shedding light on its different planes as well as the strands of hair (as evidence by the small "dots" of orange color sprinkled throughout). Adding a stronger shade of orange to the light side of the horns would probably made the image "pop" more. Still, you did a fantastic job and I appreciate you giving me the opportunity to analyze it. There's definitely a lot to take away from here.

I thought about making 'horns' pop but I wanted to make them hmm less visible and kind of blending with the rest.

Maybe the painting could be exposed a little more at the centre;

I am working on it. I cannot figure out how snaping to grids and guides works. It seems to just jump to random places which makes me snap.

Exploring design. Colors are random but I am leaning towards some darker blues and greens. Desaturated with dark fantasy vibe. It probably won't matter for me because for painting I go with whatever I feel like at that moment (I guess it will be all blue in the end)

I am going for witch/shaman vibe now
So 1 goes out for sure she must be wearing crown and mantle it just part of her. It could fit her younger self/apprentice. I don't feel 8 either I was curious it would look. She will have jewelry I am thinking if gold would make sense or to keep it as magic gems and crystals (which could be golden).

My favourites are 9, 7 and 2. I put bloody red in here. I just can feel it. She gets more wild as progressing

1 is the closest to the old design so I really like that one. It's a much different character now

Currently I am at 7 and 9. I can't find a top part that I would like. I will end up mixing all of them. I will see how it goes

I personally like the overall outline and head/shoulders design of 7, but the face of 9 and the clothes of ?.

Some aztec witch references might help, they use a lot of feather motifs and have some pretty unique clothing. A few pieces from here and there might help as inspiration.

Some sketches from today. Did them from imagination. The blue ones are from refs. I often spend too much time searching for ref or posing 3d models and I want to get more confident with imagination. Some parts are off

Most problematic are arms but I fell they are slowly getting better without refs. This and having idea what pose should I use

Started working on a painting but I hate it. I thought I would figure this as I go but no. I will start over. I will show it anyway. So I decided to go with a rectangle shape for the cape to show authority (i hope it works that way) and I part on shoulders will be wider. But the headpiece doesn't work i tried a couple but I think I will go just with the antlers/roots part and put few leaves in it

And some studies. I thought it may be useful to work on my rendering because it quite messy process right now. Decided to change refs into dwarfs to make it more interesting and to work on body types

I think that her neck feels a bit short, even tho it's not really. Probably is the cape that makes it look that way, as if she is a bit hunched forward. That said, i really liked the painterly feel that it passes and good stuff on the studies too!

I love to see you venturing out and trying out new backgrounds. Albeit a work in process, I understand the painting didn't turn out the way you want it to but I think you did a good job regardless. I look forward to seeing what your new painting looks like.

Neat pal, I glance some of the old post for the character but looks like you are struggling with the design (we all do struggling to our own design). One thing I notice is the witches/shaman posture looks muscular like tribe warrior compare to generic witches view who look trying to poison every single town folk because they accuse her and throw her into bonfire. Which first glance for me she is tribe warrior. Maybe the head tilt down little bit and eye tilt up little bit for killer glance.

Anyway, pretty cool and I look forward into it.

So I looked up some concept art from my favourite games. (I should start collecting concept art books) Have a some ideas what should I change. I will try to give it more elaborate thought process. It is important to ask the right questions which make the whole process easier. And I should slow it down a bit

Tried to think about it, the pose itsel look fine to me, but to make it more dramatic I guess you could experiment with changing the angle and ligthing. I played a bit with the clip studio model and did a few random examples:

similar pose, just changed angle a bit. Point is, by just changing the perspective can help give it a slightly different ambience.

Of course getting some references that give the vibe you are looking for is absolutly a great idea as well!
