Quick grid study then freehand

Grid is certainly good training for proportions but I am still symbol drawing
Don't know if I need a separate practice for that or if the grid will help

I never knew that the smaller grids would help focus on details and reduce symbol drawing.
So I might start with a small grid then progress larger until freehand.
Right now I am absolutely humbled by this 10x10 grid, its really hard to be that precise and focus on that many points of reference.
Very rough start to test out what size grid to start at

I have made a monster
Instead of following through my lines, I thought I would draw box by box.

I realise now the parts I struggle on most are the parts I am more likely to symbol draw.
I can really see the element of drawing what I see vs what I think
Roughly done jinx study, not sure if i am going to finish it. Just the process of using a grid has really helped me

Hey,
great to see another productive artist around here! That’s really motivating and makes me want to get back into it properly too.

I checked out all your work here, and I have to say — you’ve made huge progress! Especially when it comes to faces and anatomy.

What really stands out to me are your gesture drawings — some of them are super expressive. You can clearly see the poses, the anatomy feels solid even though it’s simplified, and the gestures look full of life.
I think if you manage to keep that same fluidity in your more detailed sketches and illustrations later on, you’re going to become a really great artist. 👏

Thanks, from all of the feedback people have said I realise that I am making progress even if I don't "feel" like I am. Its really nice to hear that.

I think that’s such a typical artist thing. we just can’t look at our own studies “normally.” We only see what still looks off or what needs improvement, and completely overlook the things that actually did get better.
That’s why I find feedback from others so important and valuable it helps me notice the improvements I’d otherwise ignore.

Its weird how much my own perception differs from what I am actually seeing
When you draw you have to not draw what you think you see , as you said people miss the good and the bad in their own work

My plan was to trace the construction so I had feedback to know if my construction was correct.
But I kept making mistakes things not lining up, I tried to find a loomis model to help but couldn't get one that line up with the reference.
So I kept retracing the construction to figure out whats wrong
I redone this so many times today. The key thing I learnt the first circle in the loomis head represents the cranium that cranium covers the top of the head all the way to the upper jaw.
So in my previous work I was misaligning that. The loomis circle the very first one needs to line up with the cranium and most of the time that means the cheek bones fit inside that circles, just like loomis says then slice off the sides. In my previous drawing the circle is too small and I expand out from the cranium deforming the skull

I knew the angle of the head tilt would throw off all my proportions, I hoped I got it right but I did not. Still worth trying though
