Term 1 - Mae Retra

Hi there! First submission for me here, my love one bought me the full art school for digital artist courses (i'm a lucky guy !)
Since i'm a french student, i would like to apologise if my english sucks a bit I will try my best to stay comprehensive. For the story, I started 2 year ago Art classes through various format (began with some tutorials and then more recently (about a year ago) more seriously with books and an other french online digital art school). I would like to become a professionnal freelance artist but it's a long road and i still have a lot to learn!
So, Thanks to my wife, i'm happy and eager to follow Marc Brunet courses and with the help of the community, have some hope that this will help me to become a better artist!

For the next assignement i use five differents ref pictures (the two castles, a sky, the land, and the character).

Bonjour Mae, You did a real nice job, I just turned my tablet off because my eyes were getting strained on the last of the adjustment levels sheet. Your English is very good, probably better than mine and i live in England. On a serious note what did you use for the last of the colour balance, hue saturation, levele ,curves? You know the one, the girl under the umbrella at the seaside? You have done a real good job of it, I ended up switching it off and decided to start a fresh tomorro otherwise I was gonna lose it, too many options for me, I never really use those functions. I wanted to ask, did you use them all? and what did you find worked best? Merci Mae, bonsoir.

Hi @bowzertron and ty! Well, i have to admit that the last one was pretty hard indeed, my eyes was also bleeding xD. It's not perfect and i firstly made the mistake of tweeking contrast to early resulting in a overcontrast image that i cannot (certainly because i don't know how) reverse the effect without modifying the overall color adjustments that i made before. So i had to retry:
I used a mix between Color balance, Hue saturation, and curves. I think i began my adjustments with Hue saturation mode and tryied to approach the ref image with the last two adjustment mode. First Hue saturation, then Color balance tweeking ligh tone mid tone and dark and then a bit of constrast using a "S" Curve. But frankly it was a lot of back and forth between the different mode and a bit of luck before i found an approaching result.

I keep coming back to the same image for this assignment and trying and trying and getting nowhere. I didn't realize color was so complicated, I feel color illiterate. I have to take a break because it has been a couple of hours of me struggling, but I really appreciate your advice, I was so fixated on color balance and curves, I didn't even think to look at hue saturation. I am brand new to digital art and art in general, so thank you for the tip!
