Bonjour ! I'm Anthony aka Vanthury, i'm french and i'm doing art as a hobby .. for the moment
I'll post here my progress and maybe one day i will be good enough to earn money from my passion !
i also have an instagram account @vanthury.art for my personnal drawing, it'll be better and better thanks to this fantastic course ! thank you all !

Salut !

Welcome to the forums! I really liked your gallery on IG! Keep up the good work!

Here's my first practice on head anatomy. Thanks to the video i now know that ears are not that complicated to draw (at least from front and side view ahah) !

Welcome to the forums Vanthury!
I also checked out your art on insta, you're of to a wonderful start already!

  • As for the ears, yeah there are really not that hard but keep in mind that you should still use reference for them (Doesn't matter how easy)
  • Once you understand the basic structure try to experiment with a couple of variations: like really long ears, pointy elf ears and so on, gets you a lot more flexibility.

That said they still look really good for the first patch, look forward to the shading when you want a bit more challenge ;D

Thank you for the feedbacks ! I have the really bad habit of drawing without references cause I felt like cheating 😂 but i need to change that.
I think i will do a portrait study in value to sumup all the head anatomy !

Interesting, a lot of people (mainly who don't draw themselves) are saying that using reference is cheating.

Well there is a clear answer to that:

If you want to draw something, you need to see it.

Doesn't matter if you use reference at the moment or used reference, you always need to see the subject beforehand.

When you use no reference, you still see the things you used to see with your eyes in your head which would be your Visual Library

Let's say you need to draw an apple, you have never seen an apple before, how are you supposed to draw it?

Either look at an apple in real life or use the internet, either way you used reference at that moment, when you decide to look at the reference for 10 seconds and then "free draw" the rest without looking, you still used reference for it.

Now if you have drawn apples for a long time now, your Visual Library is full of them, you can draw them without reference but you still used to use them (You can even argue that you still use reference because you see it in your Visual Library, but nobody goes that far ^^)

I hope this helps to not feel bad for using reference, not only for you but for other people who see this post!
It's important and shouldn't be discouraged!

Remember: You can only learn if you use reference!

Here Here!! @luke.buersgens :beers:

Any artist you admire that can work from imagination has done hours of observation and study to get to that point. Never feel like a cheat for using references. Learn to observe and SEE!

Much love.

Hi @luke.buersgens and @hojoflow !

You're totally right, i'm very aware that it's not a good way to do art ! In my case i think it's because i love challenge too much but the bad side of this is that i learn slower and it's more tiring.

Today i made some progress in that way ! For my warmup i used reference and just 2 values (i could have add a third one to better see the shapes)

Thanks for your support and feedbacks, it's appreciated

Who doesn't love a good challenge? ;D
You can definitely integrate it and I know how:

  • Back in DrawABox we had the 50/50 Rule meaning 50% of the time you would draw with the sole purpose of improving your skills and fundamentals!
While the other 50% was to draw just for the sake of drawing!

  • This was basically used to give your mind a break, give your brain time to think about the things you did in the study phase and absorb them better.
  • Normally you would just throw yourself at the page and draw things that came randomly to your mind, not even minding the rules and fundamentals, just freedom and experiments!

But I see no reason why you can't do the same with not using reference at all while using fundamentals and rules!
Who knows? maybe you find new ways of doing things!

Have a great day ^^

Great point, also i think i heard Marc say somewhere to limit the amount of 'new' things you are doing with a piece. Try to keep like 80 percent comfort zone and really push for something new in that 20 percent.

Yes indeed, i did a new piece following that advice and it helps to focus on the challenging point. I love character design and using references is like choosing what you want to wear so Pinterest is my friend

Here’s my latest piece after watching Marc latest video

thank you for the kind feedbacks ! Still i think i should definitely have a better, blacker, line art or have a more painted line ! ^^
