After reviewing the individual anatomy bits for the last few days, I felt ready to move on to the full-head render assignment of Term 2 - Anatomy 1 - Assignment 4.
Don't get me wrong, this is not my first time painting a face, but it's never been this easy so far in my life. I really feel like reviewing the anatomy and practicing the shading and rendering for individual bits gave me the confidence and experience I needed to turn this portrait into a breeze.
So the sketch took about 30-45 minutes, and the rendering about 3.5 hours (including pointless nitpicking near the end). I decided to check how the final result worked with the original lineart overlapped on it and... damn! It's not bad! I think that just means the local contrast on details like hair, eyes, lips, and so on could be pushed a bit more in the darker values, since a black line seems to benefit the "read" of the thumbnail.
I might do another one for a male face, take a break, or move on to the remaining assignments of Term 2. Not sure yet!
