Here's the usual next-step in my process, I just make a single shape covering the entire silhouette of the character (no separation by material or skin or color) and I just go ham on one layer. Plan out the shadows, lights, value, local color, etc. Very rough, very exploratory, and ideally quick. Then, typically, I start to refine areas and slowly clean up the entire artwork.
This is the rough exploration state, with a beginning of clean-up on the face.
