Yeah I've been taking Marc's classes and I did the assignments (at least all the early ones, as you can see in the beginning of the blog!). I also sent a few pieces for review back when I had the livestream reviews.

I'm very impulse driven seeing as I paint only as a hobby. I get to decide what I'm feeling for next! I would say that I try to keep it 80% comfort zone, 20% trying new things. That can be aspects of design, rendering, materials, lighting, composition, etc. The rest is almost following a recipe!

Also, if you keep things short and sweet, i.e. painting small/quick props or scenes, you can really follow the vibe of "today I'll draw some guns, tomorrow a character, and next week study hand gesture". You're always free to choose, until it becomes a job!

I'm finally done with this drawing.

It took a long while because I took time off for personal reasons. I'm back in the game now, at least!

The real breakthrough in learning this time is extra concepts in metal rendering - I had good notions as to what to do with bare metal, shiny metal, matte metal, but never painted/glossy metallic surfaces. I think the legs look reasonably like candy-coat paint, which is a first for me.

Keep up the grind, always!

Hello all, it's been a hot minute!

Here's a tree I did. I'm no longer working with my old setup, I built a new PC with a tablet so this was a process to get back into the habit of painting. My color calibration is completely off, so I need to get that fixed. Hopefully the colors aren't too off here.

The lighting of the archer is spectacular. The metal rendering. And I like the metal rendering on the metal shoes.

I'm painting another one of these. They're comforting and straightforward, which allows me to generate momentum for stuff more outside my "cozy zone".

Most notably, this is the layer structure:

At first I painted under a sketch layer, but after a short while I just merged everything together and now it's a single blob. Rendering on top is very simple, straightforward, forgiving and satisfying. Not to mention, much faster!

I would try rendering on one layer more but I just feel like if I mess up one thing that means I have to paint over that and then also fix the other things that got messed up, but I guess that's what the lasso and selection tools are for, anyways great work love the warm color tones this has and the detail in it looks amazing so far!

great work Von. quick question. would you consider the tree in the water outside your conform zone? if not, then what? just curious. in terms of quality all of your work seems consistent.

The tree itself was definitely comfort zone material, the water rendering part not so much. Basically I've done some elements of it before, but the reflections on the water and the sheen of it all was a bit new. 90% comfort, 10% new?

My process of painting is pretty much well defined by now, like a recipe I follow. I've optimized something that is geared towards speed (moving on to other things without an extreme level of polish) and fun. Here and there I'll take the time to work on a bigger piece (see Vivi splash art), but I'd rather produce fun little thingies than big illustrations.
