More refining + A look inside my... creation process

Okay, so, the Focal point of the character himself is supposed to be his head, where I put most of the detail. I also made it so his face is the lightest in value.
He is supposed to be a character that symbolizes the sun, so I want to convey that as much as possible, so that I don't have to rely on telling people he IS based off of the sun. (Sadly I don't think the judges will have time to read a paragraph explaining that the character is the sun.) So, I decided to imagine the sun in a literal sense, as the "Center of the solar system" and a "Bright ball surrounded by darkness"
I also wanted an expression + Pose that kind of gives off a magical + Fantasy feeling. As cool as describing a characters powers are, I want a character that comes off as powerful, so you can only imagine what they're capable of.

Bumping my thread to let you guys know i've still been working pretty hard on this character, but my computer broke and at any given time could stop working all together. I'm convinced there's some kind of "dobby" following me around breaking my art supplies. First my tablet, now my computer. Harry Potter mustn't compete in the art war!

But in spite of all that, i'm still here
So i guess my plan is to make a final illustration and concept sheet here soon. So in case my computer breaks before the deadline, I can at least have something I like to enter, although i'm disappointed that I won't be able to utilize all the time we've been given.

It's sad to hear though that your tablet and computer are both going down, I hope you'll find a way to get around that issue man and work fully still

One of the things i was a little weary about was my characters all kind of looked like antagonists. They didn't really feel like the "Main character" or hero. I tried to go a different path and created a "Protagonist" character. I still think I like my Sinister sun man too I have too many ideas y'all....

going to bump my thread, last night the site totally shut down and went into "Read only mode." I'm seriously considering the possibility that there IS a Dobby out there trying to make things difficult for me.

As of now, I'm experiencing something i'm going to dub "Artists flood". Like, all these ideas just keep coming and I can't just stick with one . So basically, I'm going to consider the deciding factor as the character that is the most fun/easiest to draw. I can't force a character to happen.

I find it helpful to gather inspiration from character designers that are already working for a studio. I think my first mistake was trying to gather inspiration from characters meant for 3D rather than 2D. (I'll save that for if someone asks "what's the difference?" I talk way too much for my own good.)

What gets me though, is I start to get a little too carried away, and I start thinking "Oh this character needs some friends, and a villain, and this and that," and I'm not trying to pitch a TV series here

Alright, a favorite among myself and my friends has been my "Sinister sun man" or "emissary of the sun" as the title of the topic suggests, so I guess he's my guy. I was really fond of him but "Ditched" him in favor of a cuter, more relateable character, but he wasn't honest or true to myself as a character designer. I love the snarky, condescending characters, so naturally anything that isn't that is going to be weird. Trying to compete with a character i didn't feel 100% was going to be a bad move in the long run.

I'll use the rest of my time doing a "wow" concept sheet + Final image to submit. Look forward to it!
(I always do everything in less than a few hours anyway i'd probably wow myself if i actually didn't rush all of my work and used my time effectively... )

Anyway, this is what I've been up too!

I want to bring back the lightning, I missed it, and I have a feeling some of you guys did too.
If you can't tell what that weird yellow blob is, it was supposed to be an earring but I obviously goofed and forgot to render it, but none of these images are final, just kind of wanted to remind you guys I'm still here!

Playing with shapes now, trying to study the difference between fabric, skin and metal. (And hair)
trying to steer away from "Pilot lacking a mech/ part of a team" and more towards an independent character.

TLDR: I've changed my mind again. Going back to my "Sun prince". Turns out, out of all the characters so far, he's the easiest to pose and read so I think i'll have a lot of luck with him.

So wish me luck! I'll probably change my mind in a week

It's been a week so far and I haven't had second thoughts about my sun dude yet Haha xD i think that means we have our guy...

I'm working on the Character sheet and final image right now. Although the character sheet is tricky because its just a matter of making it look neat and understandable without cluttering it with words explaining things, which I'm trying to avoid because I don't think the judges will even have time to read, given that there are hundreds of submissions D'''x
