Hello,
My name is Khalid and I am a character designer / illustrator from Indonesia. This is my 2nd Art War, I hope I can deliver a much better concept than my previous one. For this theme, I already has a solid brief that I want to explore.

Here is the brief for the character :

These are some reference that I compile :

Indonesia is a large country with so many cultural differences that very distinct from one and another. For this character, I choose a few tribes as references such as Nias, Dayak, Batak, and Gayo. Because they have a similar color tone, look more practical and of course, look cool.

My personal challenge is to design a character that combine local martial art called 'silat' with a levitated shield to form a brave and strong character who can defend her country. Also, the style I'm trying to achieve is somewhat like MTG.

Here is the character exploration I did. Since the idea is already solid, in this phase I focus on the shield's movement, general shapes, and character silhouette. Love to hear what do you thing about this.

Also, I did create a key pose to show how she controls the shield to attack and defending. It's just for visualisation and I have no plan to dive more into it yet.

I like the Outfit in A, the pose in D and the shield in C. Actually I like the shield design of B because its very unique, but it doesn't seem as functional as the other shields.

It took me long enough. But at least I made a progress. Here is some costume iteration I did to find the best suit for her.

Edit log : Minor change for costume iteration

The flag color of indonesia is red and white and I had a big problem designing with only two color. So, I decided to add black color as an accent to make the character looks more appealing, and tried to stick with the actual reference I used. I hope it's not a problem.

Which one is your favorite? Love to hear what you guys think about it.

I'm thinking to continue with D costume because it shows more powerful vibe.

For this update, here is a weapon exploration. The weapon she used are the shards, a triangular-shaped shield that levitate and move according its master. I already set that the weapon build up from 3 triangles to form trapezoid.

Which one is your favorite? Please do tell me. Personally, I like B and D and I can't choose one between these two.

Also, here is the ideation for shield movement:

When activate, this is how the weapon moved.

As defense mechanism, I'm thinking creating an energy shield from the shards. This will make the cover area a lot bigger.

I hope I can warp the concept before weekend and start the illustration next week.

Here is the character concept. Personally, I'm not sure if the black color in her costume is allowed. Since Indonesia's flag is only red and white. However, black is mostly used for color on the cultures that I use as references.

Also, here is a quick thumbnails I did. I create each thumbnail for attacking and defending position. I'm still thinking of the best way to show her power in an illustration. I might be create another sketch later.

A. Attacking action; Berlian is attacking her enemies, locking the enemy and attacking the other at same time

B. Defending action; Berlian is defending the sacred area and creating a magic shield

Here is the update for the illustration. I decided to choose attacking thumbnail for her since most of people prefer this than the defending one.

To enrich the story, I decided that she would kill enemy mage first since they have lowest defend skill than others. I might add more bodies or stones to the background.
