Art Blog January 2023
New year, new us.
Here are some images that I have helped people out with in the discord server in the past couple of months. They are out of context from their blurbs that I usually type along with them.

And one deep dive for someone online asking about stylistic choices. We did an online session talking about the piece so it is not as detailed as I would have made it posting on the forums here in Cubebrush. It also was typed in photoshop, with no spell check. So forgive the haste there.

The Strange Critique Culture
People dont often surf the critique section here. And they dont post there. Most of the posts made on this site are just art school journey blogs, and a few art blogs.
People will see a critique section, make an account, post, and come back days later, or are never heard from again. I often wonder if it's just fear. Lack of response. Or something else that happened during my two year hiatus.
I find the critique culture to be a very strange thing. And although the critique section has pretty much died here in the Cubebrush forum, there are more people than I can count that just throw stuff out there in the discord, without doing any research, or any studies, using zero ref, and looking for help. Then they get nothing in return. Or something of very little value. It is very fascinating.
Somewhere along the line, people get the idea to ask on multiple platforms, discord groups, facebook groups, as to what they can do, or should do to fix their work. They post the same piece in several places, almost like baiting several fishing lures, hoping for a nibble. Let alone a catch, which becomes a legendary level fish.
"Feedback welcome." "Any feedback appreciated." Are common post requests. Completely non specific. Who knows what anyone is going to say if anything. "Anatomy check" is one that happens so often its crazy.
"Roast me" is one that I find disturbing for the educational avenue of artwork. Negative reinforcement, especially when you aren't even trying to be funny is just a waste of everyone's time.
Most people post their work in progress and say, "Anything wrong before I move forward?" Which I find even more disturbing. They are leaving the developing of observation, confidence, emotion and various other skills that to the whim of the faceless internet. On every step of the way. At some point they must realize that it is a hindering bottleneck for progression. They simply cannot be doing this to themselves the rest of their lives. Or at least I hope not.
But I realized that for some people it is the sure fire way to share things to an audience who is willing to look at it. Otherwise it will get lost in the ether.
In this case I dont think that people are really looking for anything like critique. Or, truth. Or something that they can grab onto to help them see what is wrong. They just want to share their progress. Any critique they receive is pointless. What they want is their their mom to put it on the refrigerator.
I hope that I can provide help and guidance to those that want it. Sometimes I feel like the help I try to provide isn't what people are looking for. They are looking for the moment in the sun, where no one can find anything wrong. But the trick is on them. This is where they donโt realize they are making my skills better, and not their own. Rapid fire critique all day is like carving the fundamentals in stone. So if you can help, it will help build an actual community.
So lately I've just been writing in, "looks good, keep going. ", "Push to the finish." "Is this done?" And it is all the person needs to be motivated to move forward. They dont want the explanation. They dont want to see that when they just climbed a mountain summit that there is another mountain to climb. โAh well, Iโll just live here. Forever.โ
But there are a few. I've been lucky to find them. Who rise to the summit. Gaze unsurprised at the ranges of mountains before them in the cold gray. You beat your chest, and laugh defiantly, spitting mist. You tighten your straps and descend. Embracing the challenges. Embracing that which others call madness. You. I look at your posts. I enjoy our conversations. You are the ones who will have your faces carved in the mountain. Because you love the climb. Just push forward..
