Art Blog February 2023
What a short month! I want to be a bit more focused on my own technical, and subjective goals from here on out. Here is what I have discovered in February.
BRUSHES
Creating brushes has been a passion I've had for the past year. I didn't know it would be. I always bought brushes and downloaded the ones that others post. I would try them all out and only ended up keeping the ones that were good for rendering, or that I understood. But I would rarely use them. Just putting them on the peg board seemed to be appropriate throughout the years.
All of this stems from wanting to make digital feel more realistic. That is my goal.
I recognized that no matter what, Photoshop's brush tool is never going to be versatile enough to replicate the dexterity and feel of real media. And I feel it never will in my lifetime. I'm not even approching the tactile feel of tablets and screens here.
I just don think it is their goal to achieve a simple set of brushes that are like the tools you will find int he store. I absolutely love the technology. I can't get rid of it now.
I have not taken the opportunity to try other programs however. I didn't know Corel Painter was still around so I'm trying that out in March. CSP and Procreate are doing some really interesting things and I will probably talk about that once I have some more experience with the programs later this year. .
What I have decided is that there needs to be a certain levels of consistency, and variety within every brush I create in order to meet what my needs are. I have to understand it enough to control it, and yet attain enough chaos to find happy accidents.
Thankfully I have zeroed in on some real gems and feel I can start to really ENJOY painting. Emphasis on fun.
I will organize them abetter this year I think. And make some paintings. I will release the brushes upon you with a pdf or short video of some kind. Meanwhile enjoy their silly names.

COMMUNITY
I didn't know about DTIYS till recently. I think that participating more in the broad community of digital painting and creation will be a good thing. Finding competitions, fan art challenges and the like will help free up the art block. I have no goals yet to make money creating art so this is part of my goal to have fun and enjoy making pieces I want to make. So I started with my first DTIYS with MoonColony Studio.
After making two thumbnails in a couple of hours. I realized that I wanted to try to stick to my goal of fun, and enjoy the process the entire way through. Even though there are parts of the process that can be annoying or tedious, I want to find a process for me that eliminates those moments in front of the screen entirely. So I'm going to use this piece to do that since there is no time limit.

Going to make it through the whole human anatomy this year for studies. Composition will be a real focus however.

@Mogwai_Z I think its just the artschool discord. I know artschool is ON cubebrush platform, but cubebrush forums is not....on artschool discord?? I dont know how to say that.
I wish there were an official cubebrush forums discord to talk and meet with all the people just on the forums. All of the activity here is mostly artschool journey blogs however so its a bit moot. I dont know what is going to happen to these forums eventually. Very few public participants other than the artschool students.
However there are way more participants in the discord I feel. A pretty fast turnover rate though. I think on average the attention span seems to be a month for the new participants.
But the interaction is much less than here, just getting emotes and stuff like that on your posts, and then your post is gone, never to be scrolled by again. I prefer this kind of forum platform I think. Discord channels and chatting is a real time suck, and I'm stopping now. I have met some cool people though. It's time to draw.
I dont really know what is going on there in the discord to be honest. But I think it is mainly Marc's youtube audience and new students coming to the unofficial/official discord server that people other than Marc started. I think he is trying to get full admin of it so it can't get deleted? I don't really know honestly. I never bought artschool so I can't say.
I have met people there, and voice chatted with those that never even knew that the forums existed. And visa versa, like in your case.
I just searched for 'discord' on the forums one day because I was curious, and found a link. There are a lot of people there. And as of April 2021 you get a code to access the terms 0-10 channels or something. So....I dont know if I can publish the link here or not. ? I guess it has to be somewhere though right?
I tried it out, I think I learned from the experience. I'm still there. But now I'm part of the turnover rate I guess. Coming back here and going to spend time making art and content instead of chatting and helping the never ending influx and endless void that is discord channels.
