  • Thank you! I finally cleaned that up. Meanwhile started 3 more ..I have a habit of taking too long to finish a piece, then I lose interest in it and just start something else. I found 8 from recently i started and abandoned, that are decent enough to not delete, but not finished. There’s also been a number of drawings I felt I “outgrew” - became better before I finished them, and it would be easier to start from scratch than fix them. Anyone else thinking that?
  • Lady Death Fanart Collectible: Part 6 Polypaint and base Hi, it’s time to share with you another part of the process to create this fanart piece. Polypaint As this is my first collectible fanart I didn’t have previous experience with polypaint so I tried my best and played a bit with it.I wanted to give a ghostly and eerie look to Lady Death, she is beautiful and deadly, but at the end of the day she is a woman that died and was reborn at hell as an avenging spirit, that’s why I gave her skin tone a bluish very cold tone.As you will see I gave myself some creative freedom to deviate from the traditional color scheme that this characater has in comics and illustrations. To add a bit of sensuality by painting some freckles on the face and the chest. The dark nature of this character was the perfect excuse to gave her a kind of goth make up, very dark shadows around the eyes, blue lips and fingernails. I know that the original character includes sexy red lips but I wanted this girl to have a sexy but at the same time creepy look, that’s why we can see some thin veins emanating from her eyes. The biggest chromatic change I did for this character is at the hair. Lady Death has a characteristic white weavy hair but in my fanart I decided to gave her a very saturated blue color. The reason behind this wasn’t only an aesthetic choice. I want that the face area strongly pulls the attention of the viewer so this area needed a stronger contrast. Another reason is that I want her to have a more modern look, as I mentioned before, I’m strongly attracted to women with goth/punk look. I gave myself half an hour or more to analyse the work of experienced sculptors that create collectibles and I discovered that the use of darker values on the skin is often applied to create a greater sense of volume and three-dimensionality. I found that areas with heavy ambient occlusion are the perfect places to paint with darker colors in order to increase the separation between different forms. Even though she has a bluish skin tone, I used a bit of warmer hues in areas that, in real life, tend to go towards red and pink, this is very obvious in the nose, cheeks, and knuckles. Thinking with a logical mind it’s completely absurd to have warmer tones on the body of a zombie like creature but I didn’t want to limit myself by using only blue tones, it looks boring and artificial. In real life these colors are created by blood vessels in areas where the skin is very thin. ** Scythe **for her weapon I applied a cool gray with some warmer variations, this color scheme is influenced by the work of H.R giger. Base I’d like to talk about the design for the base which, to be honest, I forgot to develop along with the character. My main idea with the base is to show that Lady Death inhabits a very sterile and arid land, at the end of the day she is at hell. You can see a that she walks over dirt and rocks, a sign that she’s surrounded by death and loneliness. As part of the landscape we can see some bones and skulls to reinforce the idea of lack of living creatures, yet we can see three hands that try to reach her legs. This hands represent that all creatures are subordinated to her power and seek an evil blessing with a simple touch of the princess of the damned.1- The hand with skin burns represents the souls of those who are newcomers to hell, tortured souls that suffer for the sins comitted on earth.2- The hand with greenish rotten skin and pustules is the reminder of the decay that has infected the souls of those who have been trapped and have forgotten their humanity3- Last but not least, the hand of a demon shows that even dark creatures and entities bow before her presence. The cherry on the top, at least in my vision, are the simese twins that emerge from the ground, this malevolent creatures remind us that in hell there’s only perversion and any trace of innocence is lost. Thanks for reading till this pointI’m really happy to be very close to finish this creative journey, last but not least it’s mandatory to talk about splitting the sculpture in several pieces to be printed, this will be my last entry before showing the final rendered images. See yaMay Zbrush be with you

It feels really nice I hope it stays this way A portrait of old dude. It's the same character I posted a while ago. Inspired by Bayard Wu work. At first I thought of him as a bear but I named him Fenrir and I think wolf suits him better. Eye gave me a bit of hard time but I think it is fine now. I focused on face and forgot about area below. The way I draw hair clashes with greying hair. I had the same problem while doing Lohse's white hair. Does it looks like it is greying here? I love how desaturated red looks blue there. I keep lying to myself that I will use different color scheme but It all comes down to this blue and yellowish one it is just flipped this time Have a great day!

I've heard of Tapas, haven't tried it yet. I think I'll try it out to see how the upload system works. Webtoon's upload process is fairly straightforward, though their policy is pretty strict on content. I was flagged once due to a character showing a bit of buttcheek, so just flagged the manga as 18+ and called it a day, though that affects your exposure.

Thank you so much for the tips! Yeah, I kinda feel a bit lost about the whole online art sharing thing, but I guess one just have to get a feel for it. In any case, once I have enough usable material, I might gather my courage and start uploading.

I gave your comic Nozomu a look, it looks pretty professional! The covers are especially impressive. The style sorta reminds me of Dragon Ball, though that might just be my limited expertise talking.

Term 1 - Pen Control

I kinda forgot about this one as I often do similar exercises as warmup.

Term 1 - Combining Images

I'm really dissatisfied with this one  Tried to change the angles, the lighting, the shadows, even put in some extra shading on a multiply layer, but the whole things just looks broken. I might redo it later.

Haha, thanks for taking a look. You are by no means wrong by seeing the similarities to Dragon Ball. It's almost the first comment most people make  and for a good reason! Being a huge fan of Akira Toriyama, I designed a lot of it based on his style. I have since started to deviate a bit more, but there is still a strong influence from him in most of my work.

Which I find flattering! I LOVE Toriyama's work and Dragon Ball! (and Dragon Quest and Chrono Trigger and many other works)

Btw, it's also embarrasing to go back and look at some of the first chapters. After everything I've learned these past year, it's easy to see how it could be improved considerably.

However as a few authors have explained, try not to redo or redraw, instead move forward and make the next chapter better.

On sharing online, it IS nerve wrecking to share your work. We have such high expectations of ourselves and it's incredibly demoralizing to get negative comments online. The internet can be a savage place.

Try to not stress too much about it. Do it whenever you feel you are ready for it, but also understand that there is hardly a "perfect moment". Set a milestone for yourself, and try to stick to it as nervous as it may be, and always make sure to not take criticism personally.

It honestly looks pretty good! The orange cat being the only one that seems kinda out of place, though it's a nice detail

I'm glad you find it flattering  I'm not super familiar with Dragon Ball, but I know it's a very influential manga/anime, and some of my friends used to be huge fans.

Hey, thanks for the tips! Yeah, redrawing is an urge I often have to resist. Also, perfectionism, though I suspect that's pretty common I the art community.

Term 1 - Assignment 4

At first, I wasn't a big fan of these exercises, but I can see their usefulness - the last two were particularly interesting as they required that I take a long thorough look at the faces and recognize which features are unique, or which ones make a person look young or old.

As far as I know, there's no Heal tool in CSP, so I instead copypasted the necessary parts for the young/old exercise.

Nicely done. Mister Samuel Jackson's eyes really popped there xD.

Yea, CSP has no "heal", so we mostly do things manually by copying, duplicating (there is a "copy brush"), blending, air erase, etc. Pretty much all exercices translate well to CSP though, and I don't think Marc even mentions the heal tool again.

Just to add, since you have a strong art background and foundation already, you might find term 0/1/2 exercices a bit simple since the course was designed for people starting from zero (basics of gestures, basics of perspective, spatial awareness, etc).

Still, try to stick to it as much as possible. Reaffirming those bases really helps, it includes some curious tips, and very soon you'll start looking at some very interesting topics (like mastering gradient maps, overall anatomy, 4/5 point perspective, some of these were new to me).

Cheers!

Wow these are great. I especially like the Kitishgarba piece as that is a style I want to learn to do too. Looks like we’re starting the program at a similar time but I don’t have much experience. I’ve been researching Chinese mythology for my own art so I look forward to seeing what else you might share. Good luck and best wishes.

Oh, I definitely will. If anything, I think there's some pretty basic stuff that I need to improve on in order to have the proper foundations. Skipping class is a big no-no for me

Oh, nice! East Asian and especially Chinese mythology has always been super interesting to me, it's so rich and imaginative. Looking forward to seeing your pieces too!

Term 1 - Daily Practice (Cylinders)

Man, this exercise took a lot out of me. I'm not good at drawing geometric shapes like cubes or cylinders. Nevertheless, here's a bunch of them. More practice later.

Term 1 - Daily Practice (Mannequins)

Only 5 out of the required 10, but better than nothing.

Oy, looks good. They all seem accuratly identified and drawn to proper angles.

Thanks! In hindsight, I'm unsure of a few of them (the red/blue distinction was a bit confusing at first), but given that I haven't done such exercises in ages, I'm still pretty proud of them.

Looking good so far. I feel drawing a ball or dot for each joint and using 3D shapes for pelvis/chest helps me quite a bit

Cheers

Thanks for the tips! I initially wanted to use 3D shapes as well but since Marc used simple rectangles in the tutorial, I thought I'd stick with those. I'll try boxes next time though!

3 months later

I'm still alive, just super busy with exams and writing my theses and stuff. Here are some cylinders I managed to squeeze in between study sessions:

Thanks @mitsuki-youko!

Two manequins for today. Not much, but I'm worn out as it is.
EDIT: S'more ladies.

I actually had one more drawing in me today. I don't normally put personal projects up in this thread, but this is sorta relevant since I had to practice posing figures. So here are some skellies, put together as an adventuring party.

Almost, it's going to be a staff, not a spear, but yes, the pose is supposed to be her leaning on it.

Cool! Its interesting to see how youre posing your characters at this early stage, I still shy away from working on pieces where i start off entirely from imagination. Do you use any reference at this stage?

Do you use any reference at this stage?

Normally, yes, since it saves me a lot of frustration and wasted time. This drawing, however, just came to me on the spot, and I put the sketch down on the canvas pretty quick. I might use references for some poses later on.

EDIT: One more thing: I sometimes find that when I rely too heavily on references for poses/anatomy, my figures become a bit stiff. Dunno if this is a problem for anyone else though.

That's really awesome! I also think the composition came out strong with the balance play, the heads lined up in a diagonal one way up to the mace and another towards the big one in a zig zag that kinda plays all the way down the knees but then not quite. A strong base with all the legs making an overall impression of a triangle

i gotta kick up my imagination game going soon

cheers!

I remember manequins from references where ok, but from imagination where a big challenge. These look good though, and the forms given to feet and hands make em more natural.

That said, something that helps th overall form is to place another element in between the 2 squares in between the torso. Overall the torso and hips are supposed to be two pieces brought together by the spine and muscles on the abdomen, so giving form to the in between helps keep the overall structure, for example:

That's some sound advice, thank you! Next time I'll try this method.

8 days later

Figure practice. I feel rusty and discouraged :unamused: Hopefully, now that the finals are over, I'll have more time and energy to practice properly.

I'd say that looks pretty good! we all progress at our own pace, so no need to worry.

Thanks for the encouragement. Sometimes I just get frustrated for not having as much time for drawing as I'd prefer, which, in turn, slows my progress

EDIT: One more thing: I sometimes find that when I rely too heavily on
references for poses/anatomy, my figures become a bit stiff. Dunno if
this is a problem for anyone else though.

I often find that when I closely rely on reference, I start to focus way too much on miniscule countour details, and less on the overall gestrure, and that eventually hurts the piece. I think it is just about finding the right amount of abstraction and exaggeration, and looking at the reference rather as an inpiration, than as something you have to stick to. What sometimes works for me is if I take a photo reference and try to render it first in a very exaggerated/cartoony way. The expressiveness often gets diminished in subsequent passes, but if the original sketch is exaggerated enough, it's sometimes less of an issue.

I love those crisp lines in your studies and the lineart piece on top. Can't wait to see more.
Oh, and I'm also glad to see another Hungarian here!

I think you nailed it. I tend to get bogged down in the details. Hopefully the gesture studies will help with that.

That sounds like an interesting method, I might try it, though I often find that when I draw in a cartoony style, I inevitably mess up the anatomy. It's pretty much a balancing act, as you said.
