Heyooo everybody,

Still watching Photoshop for digital production 2 and while the tools are still familiar to me, I worked a bit more on the character breakdown:

I will try to move to the next step which is me trying to replicate this by reference only while balancing with the actual lesson (we finally got to shading, which is something that I definitely want to focus on a bit more).

I think this looks good and I do breakdowns of artists that I like pretty frequently. One thing I've tried is to try and mimic the style but in a different pose. So I'll have the study up along with a photo and try to get the pose from the photo but in the artist's style.

Today finished watching the Photoshop for digital production video and played around with what he showed there:

Now I'll move on to do the actual assignments.

I also played around a bit more with the character breakdown. Now I'm the part where I'm trying to draw just by referencing the original one + the previous study that I did.

Getting there I would say.

The journey continues. Today I worked a bit on the assignments of photoshop:

I would've completed it but got spend too much time on the character breakdown today 😅

I fixed the position/anatomy close to the right arm (based on the reference) and started the line-art. Will try to work a bit on it every day now, but will not spend so much time each day so I can focus on the lessons.

Just finished the color blend / color transition assignment. They were actually quite fun to do. Here are the results:

The last one I was kinda in a hurry so I thought "Aaa what the heck, let me try to go straight to the soft brush and see what happens". It turned ok I think.

Now finally moving on to Perspective 2. Damn, I already feel this one is gonna take forever to finish 😅

And today we've started perspective 2! With the 3 point perspective:

I'm still watching the lesson and trying to mimic some of the stuff that I see there, to make it more interesting (instead of watching it non-stop). I liked how he provided a quick preview of everything we will see there (and the 4-point perspective with the male character looks challenging).

More progress on the 3 point perspective. One day at a time. Keep the grind going!

This was fun to do. Altho the third box (where the station point is at 90º angle) seems a bit weird (it is still inside the "triangle" where things shouldn't distort that much). What I think influences here is that my canvas was small (if I compare to what Marc was using).

Even so, quite fun! Got the hang of it

Today just played around with 4 point perspective.

Playing with buildings was fun (and this time made sure the canvas was big enough so things wouldn't get distorted) but I can only imagine the nightmare that is going to be to do the 4-point perspective assignment 😅

But that's it! Keep going! One day at a time! 💪

Just went through 5 point perspective and atmospheric perspective.

Today I also invested some time in more character breakdown study. I'm trying to understand more and more the decisions behind some illustrations and how artists adapt anatomy to their style.

Fun exercise to help you realize the mistakes you are making as well (very similar to the drawing from reference we had in Term 1).

Hey everyone,

I didn't work on any of the assignments today, but I started helping my wife kickstart a project of hers. It's going to be a children's book focused on nutrition.

I started by doing some character design explorations.
Here's what I have for one of the characters:

We will still explore a bit more.
We are not set on the style or colors (or anything for that matter), but we felt we had to start somewhere. We created a mood board of styles and characters we liked and this is the first round of explorations.

Any feedback would be much appreciated

I really like the face of the character of the children's book, especially the one with lighter hair that has more vibrant colours. He really gives the idea of having eaten something not good for him, like ten ice creams One thing that does not completely convince me are hans and feet but I understand that is a style choice. Hope to see more of these!!

Hey Dangras-Almeida, I really like the design and love the idea of the book. The only thing i would say is although, like Chiara, I understand the style choice of the hands and feet, I personally wouldn't use triangles as it suggests a dangerous quality to the character. But apart from that, I think you've nailed the character. I would love to see a turnaround of the character and maybe some expression sheets.

Today I did a gesture drawing warm-up (pretty quick, 5 min for each session - 30 and 60 sec drawings)

Really appreciate it.

And you are both right. The hands and the feet turned out a bit weird, but it was based on the reference that I was studying at the time. This is just an initial exploration. I have more references to study and will try to create the character again with them as a base. The idea is to try and collect what works from each study and come up with a final style for the character. Let's see if it will work.

I'll have to make some adjustments on those "repeating pillars" above the door so they repeat correctly (right now they feel really messed up).

Your character breakdown studies are so great, I wanted to ask you how you do it, what are the basic steps that you are following.
Do you trace the basic lines above the drawing and then try to understand how the proportion works?
It's really interesting, seems that you learn a lot from it.

One more day, one more time to study!

The character breakdown of today - an interesting piece of armor. SUPER hard to do, honestly. Since everything was there, was hard to figure out where the pieces were:

@chiara.arcidiaco thanks for the kind words and the question!
What I try to do is first trace the lines above the drawing, but not really just trace: I try to build the character from the ground-up (from basic shapes to final form) and then I try to repeat the process, but this time only using the image as a reference.

E.g.: If I'm studying a face, on top of the image I'll start drawing just a circle, to understand where is the top of the head and the nose, then I draw the centerline. After, I try to understand how the artist split up the circle to understand where are the lines for the eyes and eyebrow, what are the distance between them, and on, and on.

And today's progress on the 3-point perspective assignment. I tried to fix the pillars at the top with the lesson on repetition in perspective that Mark showed in the lesson. In the end, I made thicker pillars but I think it turned out alright.
