Thankyou to all the Cubebrush staff and ultimately the judges too for hosting this competition, I loved the Artwar last year and I enjoyed this one just as much!

For all those interested, I actually kept track of how long this illustration took this time; the best part of 4 days (this doesn't include the random bits I had started about a month ago)

Right, I'm goin sci-fi on this because it's fun to think about the problems our Earth might face in the future.
Earth is warmer, ice-caps are gone, atmosphere is getting thin, icy comets have contributed to the rising sea level and general destruction of the previous civilisation. Earth needs to be cleaned.
After alot of genetic crossing and modification humans have created super-flora that forms the structure for their new dwellings and provides the vital filtering of air and water needed for survival.

I was a bit late actually starting this post so I've already gone through a bit of designing and started to paint a composition that I'm pretty fond of:

Aight I've been doing bits and bobs for this but it's time to really focus on a final illustration
Here's some random bits of exploring I've done, unfortunately alot of the sketchy stuff was on paper that I can't find atm xD

I think I shall use this composition for my final illustration:

It has room to display the old city beneath the water, the full shape of one of the megaflora, the entirety of a the central city and also some close up stuff showing balconies etc. with people on.
Just gonna have to really push to actually put in all the detail xD

Basically blocked in all of the colours and lighting I'll want
I'll be putting alot more greenery in the city and also really going in on cool architecture, the wiggles are kindof placeholders at the moment.

Update after a very quick break, I'm managing to get through alot of these buildings quicker than i thought i could xD lotsa flat texture drawing and warping. Some of the textures are heavily based on photgraphs but I really can't find many good photo textures for this sort of architecture

This is awesome! Nice job so far! I'm really loving the idea and the piece so far. Not much to say here, perhaps add some warmer colors somewhere in the image for some visual contrast, but it's all already great anyway. Keep it up and good luck!

More details, more refined megaflora shape (referencing the coral that inspired their shape) and a lil football pitch cos these people need to stay healthy

got pretty much everything I wanted in here now, time for a final cleanup and colour and lighting adjustment, then I can compile my concept sheet together
