Hi all!
My name is Elijah McNeal and I'm placing my entry for the competition. The theme I chose is Science Fiction. I stayed relatively close to the original sketch, but went with a more open composition. I did this because I felt it would help engage the viewer's imagination, creating a sense of wonder in the world itself and what it might be like elsewhere.
I referenced my own photos from my most recent visit to Japan, but used images of Yasakuni Shrine as the based for my work. The reason being that Toshugu Shrine in Nikko, Japan is quite large. I wanted to work with something that felt quaint.
For the mix of old and new; I tried to strike up a balance. We have the Ancient Shrine, some modern tech, in the form of communications poles with wiring, and some futuristic machinery that adorns the Shrine grounds.
