To start with I browsed for some visual reference and did a quick moodboard:

I would like some mediterranean feel but avoid classic Graeco-Roman style. Something that resembles Egyptian and Minoan civilizations.

Yeah, great thumbnails! Especially 10, although the vertical format for the environment is usually harder to read, but this sketch really amazing! Also 3, 5 ang 8 looks very interesting.

Thank you! I have some bias against vertical format for environments as they are usually seen through standart screen in game or movie. Although there is no such restriction for this challenge.
I tend to agree with 3 and also inclined toward 9.

I decided to move on with color sketches for two versions and then make my final choice of the variant. These are my current attempts for color solution. Your comments and feedback is highly appreciated.

Really awesome job with these new thumbs! I really like 3 and 7. Best use of color in those, I believe.

Thank you, Filipe! I agree with you. I am most inclined toward 7 partly because I feel the composition is a little more interesting than in 3.

I love number 2 and 3 thumbnails! They look clean. The rest looks a bit muddy i think , or , have different story telling aspect with there color. The night scenes are also really cool...I think it all comes to what story you want to tell...Great work , keep it up man!

Thank you! I agree with your point about some sketches being muddy. I also like night versions but I am not sure they are a good fit for the story.

Yeah... this looks great! That's all I have to say. As for the night versions - I don't know if they are a good fit for the story but I like them the most. Especially the third one. I'm waiting for more :).

Thank you for your feedback, Jonatan! Honestly after a while I start to think I should continue with a night version. At least I feel it brings out more emotions than any other variant and most interesting to work on.

It has been a while since I posted updates for my submission. This time I made some explorations/studies of various environment elements. I tried to get the idea of how that ancient civilization architecture might have looked like. Inspired by various cultures from pre-Columbian americans to Ingushetia.

Stone faces.

Pillars and obelisks.

Studies of village appearance.

Stones of ancient buildings.

Lovely sketches!

3 and 5 really evoke a sense of the aquatic and have more of the Pre-Columbian aesthetic. I'm not sure how you plan to use the faces in your final, but if they are embedded into the rock of a cliff/mountain side I think the structural integration of 4 works rather nicely.

As for the pillars, you immediately recognize 4,11, 12 as being aquatic, but there is something about the shape and totem inspiration of 1 that I find really interesting.

Very cool project, and I look forward to seeing the finished piece!

Thank you for your feedback, @reide! Initially I thought about heavy looking simple shapes like pillars 3, 7. But aquatic motifs somehow slipped in my work. As to the heads they are going to be integrated in cliff indeed and I tend to agree about 4.
