I do not tend to participate in contests so often, but this one caught my attention immediately. I'm extremely excited to see what crazy ideas are shared here.
I have some sort of fascination about the mayan culture and | was working at the time on a concept art for a character using mayan styles combined along with a bit of cyberpunk . So the idea was in incubation at the moment I saw the Worlds contest, so here I am.
The concept of this idea, as some of you know, the Mayans were an advanced civilization from the archaic period. A civilization that suddenly disappeared, leaving only the traces of their existence in form of ruins and other objects. So I came with the idea, that perhaps the civilization was so advanced that they were able to build ancients cities in the sky. However I wanted to play with the paradox of our new modern building are in fact the ruins and the actual ruins are in a more advanced architectonic style.
I used Zbrush as my base to have an idea from where to start. After blocking out the main idea I proceed to make the initial concept in Photoshop; but while I was working on, more details were added and some other objects were removed until I managed to have a full sketch ready to add values.
I struggle for a few days to have the paint style I wanted to give to this piece of work. I wasn't looking for realism, but more of a cartoonish stylized brush stroke. After days of work I was able to obtained the style at the end, so I proceed to render the details and play with the color balance along with the gradient map until I was happy with the final result.
I enjoyed creating this concept art.
