The design task of this project was to create an environment integrating primitive construction with more advanced neo-modern architecture. I wanted to merge the two design styles as though the tribal constructs were heavily influenced by the remnant structure (neo-modern). Though the materials are drastically different, the shape languages of both mostly revolve around triangular forms.

Storywise -- why I am merging these two design languages -- the world is reborn after the collapse of the last advanced civilization. Surviving structures become holy places, shrines that are pilgrimaged too. For this environment, I have chosen a heritage center/library as the remnant shrine, with the primitive constructs built around it. The knowledge and history found inside the center have had a resounding effect on shaping the new world around it.

This contest was a really cool design challenge and has been an awesome experience!

So here is the story:
After cataclysmic events all but destroyed humanity along with their technological achievements, a new cycle began. In this rebirth, magic was awoken, pooling in certain areas. It was in these oases that the reborn people flocked. One such sight was in the remnants of the old world, of which monuments and tribal buildings are built around.

So here is a round of design sketches, and initial compositional sketches. I wanted the 'present day- futuristic' buildings to inspire the shape of the tribal constructions.

I wanted to explore a few more options for composition while also starting to flush out the design of the 'remnant building' and obelisk.

I am leaning towards Comp B and the third obelisk design (forgot to number them). Any suggestions would be appreciated! I also played around with the 3D block-in shapes I will use for the final painting.

I like what you've done in the design phase, good job!
The third obelisk reminds me of Egyptian architecture. Will the main building draw similar inspiration? Smart of you to do that simple 3D block in, that should save a lot of time with the comp. I should probably learn to do that myself, if I weren't too stubborn to dive into 3D

For reference, I drew inspiration from African cultures, tribal thatch huts and yes Egypt. The shapes themselves derive from the main building which the new age of people have found, made into a shrine, and built their own primitive constructs around. For this main building, I wanted more geometric (probably triangular because they are the best!) shapes. It will be a corroding ruin of a new-modern library overgrown by plant life.

Yes, the 3D block-in will let me quickly swap out and test the building shapes once I have the rest of the composition to a place I like. Give it a try!

Thanks! I like to do most of my designing with linework, so once I move to painting I can really begin to focus more on the art of the piece.

Update. Gonna add in a few people and inject a bit more life into it. I'll see where I'm at after that.
