Good day folk, I've been focusing a city design for 2 week straight. Always thought I have the idea until I put in the canvas and only came out the "it doesn't work" result. So I keep back and forth over Artstation to scavenge any master design and how they do it. Searching through mostly 3D art, very few have good 2D environment concept art so I keep doubting myself if it's worth it to draw in 2D only workflow instead of cooperate with 3D. I put my self-doubt aside and eventually found few 2D master environment artist and attempt to copy their workflow.

I notice a lot of them not commit too hard and just few stroke to create pattern and symbol recognition. Soooo I try it myself.

Here's mine attempt. Use what I learn in Marc video and some workflow idea from Artstation artist.

Then I realize not working out with that view, but I do accumulate some idea and different approach. I look back some Artstation painter and accumulate some idea, do it again.

2nd Approach with only pastel brush and square brush

Flipped somehow feel much better, maybe because looks 'fleshed' to me

Not the best but looks neat tbh, make me realize don't have to over do it sometime. Zoom in will notice everything are crumbling down.

Below is discarded item, some combination with 3D incase interest.

Those are good process and ideas! Trying to emulate what works, then practicing it yourself. Similar to working with references, but with processes!

Those are great pieces btw. I always struggle with environments, so these look pretty darn good to me. Especially with the colors you chose to use.

@daceronine Yeaaa often though environment is easier than character, until trying to match sky color with surrounding tree or building, it started become discolorize lol. I have to keep leave the chair stare other thing then look back the canvas back and forth just to simulate first impression. Thanks for kind word btw, really appreciate.

This week continue focus on prop building and other thing, and a new area.
Either way here is the prop building design for previously.

Follow up is new area with heavy focuses, so its gotta really 'Hit it Right'. If Illustration can be done before next Sunday then I can do more 'alien' prop. I try to take some game level design for Linear Path so I can draw not base on 3D, but base on Level Design for the sake of familiarity. Although kinda wrong or too simplify but its a process nonetheless. Never learn game design before so I dunno lol, so if you read over here and willing to share your experience then I all ear (or eye).

Title: Graveyard Of the Thousand Kingdom

First I draw bubble for point of interest (Top Left), then complexify a little bit although professional will have more like enemy placement or ambushed. Then on the right slightly complex linear path.

Before venturing to Illustration, I create some prop so I can familiar with scene. The scene is abandoned underground ancient city infected by alien creature. Tree is extinct which is non existent in this planet, pilgrim travel across the land to witness the miracle but its dangerous so Northric Republic send armies to purge any unwanted dangerous.

Have to stop this illustration painting because further refine will just become redundant or just always feel not good enough, so best to stop while possible and I sink too much hour into it. So here is one of the area I produce.

Not a really glamourous worktime btw and its not efficiency. Anyway, illustration.

Telltales story has circulated eon of decade existent of extinct tree can be grow in this land thus the believer of fertile land, war fought by almost every bygone monarch only succumbed to cursed tales.

For several everchanging period, the underground historical museum naming scheme has been change thousand glamourous name, Everlasting Land, Land of Hope, Livingland, etc. But everyone will always comeback refer the desolate land Graveyard of Thousand Kingdom.

Historically 200 Marres years ago, the cursed land houses one of the dictatory monarch of Three King name Herius cornered by Thyderic ancestor. Month of cornering oppression and war eventually Herius was demise of the crown by non other than himself, starvation. In the end the ancient land was never claimed and repurpose the futile rubber, sitting underground for 200 year until the blossom of extinct tree.

Yo that looks sick. I personally love the idea of the whole thing being under ice. Not sure why but it seems really distinctive and memorable, like you don't see that every day. The one with the cold mist is also very visually striking.

Love the story along for context too. Are you building towards something? or just adding little bits of lore to each piece to give them more flavor?

@snakker Ayyy thanks, wanted to make it narratively safe place so bonfire place do provide calmness and work a little.

@daceronine Ayo thanks, rarely see icy underground settings so I try maybe workout or maybe not.
Story wise this supposed to be prequal story buildup for main story, I do have a really basic settings, extraterrestrial being invade Martian planet because they have something universe dont. I have some idea how opening and ending connect to main story but zero clue what I have to put in between so this is the part I started throw the dart hoping to land idea that work, as you can see some might work but some do not work.

Putting tree in extinct list along green color is the most silliest decision I have ever make lol, at least now I have idea how using alien plant to terraform is a bad idea in main story and how it change current environment architecture to 'symbiotic venomize' slimy rock.

Btw here is new amended block version, which I notice previous version feel too crowded and point of interest not interest at all. So yeah a lot of time it just doesn't stick to my taste so I change a lot along the way.

This month will fully focus this whole area from Entrance to End of chapter follow my previous 2 post idea sketches flow as portfolio as I notice this actually can cover the whole story culture in very short page, so I started from Entrance.

Anyway, here's the amended version of Landscape art. Possible to comeback for upgrade more structure for main focus but vibe has been set, so nothing will change except the main building incase update needed. More upper crust layer, less busy bottom, brighter point of interest, recycle unwanted structure to background, clearer path.

Removing the left part will be increase tremendously beautiful but I wanted retained it to show entrance to main focus red tree, so those will remained.
