Jac - Art School Journey

Hi, I'm Jac, I'm a full-time software engineer who is having a mid-life crisis and decided to pursue art because why not. I'm completely new to art, so I know there is a long road ahead of me, but I hope with enough dedication and persistence I will get there one day. Please be patient with me and definitely give me a lot of feedback because I want to turn this into a backup career one day.

My goal right now is just to be consistent and do at least 15 mins of drawing every single day, so please expect me to upload at least 1 drawing to this thread every single day, and if I don't, bully me for it I actually have already been doing this for the past month, and decided to buy Marc's courses as a reward for sticking with it. Usually, I do practice for more than 15 mins a day, but I would rather set a goal low and overperform it than set a difficult goal and fail to meet most of the time.

I have started going through Marc's term 1, forgot to write yesterday that I finished his visual communication one. I started the photoshop one today but didn't got far as I had a busy day and spent the afternoon finally doing my tax lol. Honestly didn't even feel like drawing today but I still spent about 1 hr- 1 hr 10 mins on it so I consider it a win

Figure drawing, spend more time focusing on using less line/longer line instead of nailing the pose like I have been. Also tried to focus more on speed hence I was able to do 3 figures in about 30-40 mins as oppose to like 2 figures in like 1 hour like I have been the last few days:

EDIT: Someone challenged me to have fun with art too and not just treat it like a daily grind, so I did a "fun" drawing tonight:

Didn't watch much of term 1 today, I got carry away with other things, I did however draw some more:

Nice progress so far! Welcome to the group and I look forward to seeing your progress! One thing I would suggest that has helped me a ton and I frequently hear Marc recommend on his streams is to practice your line confidence with gesture drawing. Try do draw one line instead of multiple short lines and if you don't hit it. CTRL + Z and try again. You will use this a lot at first, and it will slow you down a ton. But it will help immensely in the long run. I focused on this when I started several months ago and focused on that line practice page every day. They took me so long. But now my lines are way way above my skill level compared to everything else and it makes learning each step much easier. Loving the progress so far! Can't wait to see what you have next!

I decided to do 100 gestures today, don't ask me why. Gesture is one of my weakest skill and after about 70 gestures, you can see I had an epiphany and changed my approach to gesture completely:

Today mark exactly 6 weeks since I started learning to draw, and I think for what I am able to do in 6 weeks I'm quite happy. My mentor also gave me a thumb up and I can move to term 2 now

This is great work man, you're learning very well. Just a note like Lockenheim mentioned earlier, your line quality is a bit sketchy and I think drawing with less lines and more confident lines would really improve your work, speed and flow. I struggle with this a lot myself.
Also, if you don't already, try drawing with your shoulder as opposed to just your wrist and/or elbow. That will give you a broader range of motion and greatly increase your ability to draw confident longer lines.
But you're doing great, keep practicing and having small goals and wins.

Yeah I will practice line confident and shoulder drawing as well. I just need to figure out how to best approach it (drawing with the shoulder specifically, I'm not sure if my workstation is set up to where it easy for me to draw with the shoulder, but I will try). I do do line confident practice separately, like I would draw straight line, S lines, curves, etc on its own, but I find it very hard for me to focus on that AND do figure drawing at the same time. But rest assured it's on my list of things to practice

3/6/2022 Practice:

My mentor said I can move on from term 1 yesterday, so I started on term 2 today. I'm probably really bad at head but I freaking love drawing them, much ore fun and less stressful than figure drawing lol.

I also switched from Procreate (Ipad) to CSP Desktop version today so I am not as lazy about Ctrl + Z anymore, so I hope my line confident is significantly better
