Here is another painting I was working. I have the sketch values and final here. Any feedback is welcome

This is a recent drawing That I thought turned out well for me. Any thoughts or suggestions?

I am working on a new drawing and wanted to get some feedback on the sketch phase. This is a bigger drawing for me than usual. I never include background and I am excited to experiment a bit. The idea is steampunk fantasy inspired. Let me know what you think

I took a look at this and did a quick overpaint, hope you dont mind.

The things that I wanted to focus on the most were

1. Background. On the original piece, the silohette gets lost in the background at some points so I brightened it up.

2. Overall levels, I felt the skin on the original piece was extremely bright so I toned it down a bit.

3. Far eye, check your ref on the far eye, it actually will curve around and dissapear in this 3/4 view, I feel like we are seeing to much of the eye on the original.

4. The level of detail everywhere except the face is really high, I applied a slight blur, to help bring the focus to the face a bit more.

5. Check the perspective on the nose, I feel like we are seeing to much of the top of the nose from this angle.

6. I feel the color and the values of the face need some more adjustments even after I made the changes, still feels a bit off but I mostly wanted to get the brightness down. I turned the saturation down on the lips a bit also, since the saturation on the rest of the piece was in the middle it felt like it commanded to much attention.

Overall you did a fantastic job with this and you are showing big improvement! I think the design of this and the feel is really awesome and the facial construction is quite good! I think the main weakness is the values on the face. You might try doing a piece in greyscale and apply a gradient map afterwords. But maybe thats just me colors scare me and are soo difficult for me so I usually just try to reduce the difficulty by painting in greyscale. Keep up the great work! Take all of this with a grain of salt im still pretty new and keep up the progreess!

Here is another update on the drawing. Next is to paint the airship in the back and then start coloring.

I really like the subject of your painting. There's a couple of things I think are worthwhile to mention:

In terms of composition, I think there's a bit to much focus on the left side. Basically everything points to the left side (character orientation, vanishing lines and even the airship all flow from lef to right). Something on the left that guides the eye back into the painting would be nice. As is the right side feels a bit empty, although it will get much better once you've drawn the airship.

Make sure that the airship reads in terms of value, because right now it just gets lost in the background. I believe that you probably intended to work on those as you started working on the airship, but usually it makes sense to make sure the overall values are correct before adding any details to the scene. Otherwise it's hard to judge if the composition works.

Another thing that might be cool to add and might help fill some of that blank space are to make some of the ropes that attach the ship to the balloon visible.

The characters design is very nice. The only thing that bothers me a bit is the silhouette of the clothing. There are a lot of folds but the silhouette is quite flat.

I am really excited for the finished version, this painting sparks so many cool ideas.

Thank you very much for the feedback.. So I finished the painting before reading your comments. But now that I look at my final painting, I think your comments still carry through.
The final is not as great as I imagined it but I think thats ok and I will learn from it for the next painting. I still struggle with color and need to learn more and more. I feel like the character does not pop off from the background. What are your thoughts and suggestions on colors.

I agree with what Sascha has said, I did a quick paint over focusing on values. Here are the areas I adjusted.

1. I turned the value of her dress up, even if a fabric is pure black it won't look black in the sunlight.

2. I added atmospheric perspective by lightening and reducing the contrast of the front airship

3. More atmospheric perspective on back ship.

4. I reduced contrast on shadows of the far beams, they are areas of high contrast and draw in the eyes. I kept the shadows pretty dark on the beams close to her, it doesnt make sense lighting wise but it helps draw the eyes to the character in my opinion.

5. The biggest area of value problems is the area where the beam is and her dress is overlapping. These two values are really similar and it hurts the read. I would make the beam or the dress lighter in that area. I feel like other than that the character pops from the background well. Maybe it could pop more if the hat + frill colors were a more different than the wood? Maybe a warmer color would work well? burgundy maybe? Anyways hope this helps! Really awesome work so far!

It has been around a year now since I started this course. I was reflecting on my progress and some of the lessons I learnt in the last year and I summarized them in this video alongside some of my favorite drawings from this year.
