I finally managed to get a start on term 2; starting with anatomy 1:
although this is sectioned off as 'practice' i still wanted to upload it since it's in the assignments section of anatomy 1. I thought this activity was pretty straight forward until the spheres which tend to give me alot of trouble.
A mistake i realized was i made some of my lines way too dark & skipped out on alot of lineweight, i'll keep that in mind for the next one!

Hi all
I finished the deformation of forms exercise for anatomy 1;
unfortunately, i don't know too much about shading basic shapes so alot of the shading looks out of place itself. it is still a tiny bit messy however i tried to tone the darkness of my lines down a tiny bit. the activity is actually pretty difficult since i've never really tried to manipulate shapes so much but it turned out alot of fun.

Actually, the first thing I want to compliment you on was the shading! You picked a great shade for the lighting and did well with adding hard and soft edges. You know more then most people.

As far as the lines, these look good:

If stay consistent with this kind of linework (thick for shadows, thin for lit areas) and keep shading the way you are I think you'll be in a good spot.

Hi all,
i've finished off the third practice on basic volumes;
This was again fun however the most difficult out of the three. The most interesting thing was probably spacial awareness with these form connections. This is probably one of the first times i've really thought through on the space around the shapes. i felt like i bent my forms, especially the squares, a bit too much to the point where i didn't even know what the form was doing. Again, shading is probably off.

Hi all,
i ended up practicing the 'head spheres' exercise;

there were some questions i was left with, especially for the ellipses on the sides i.e. 'what happens if the sphere is foreshortened alot and the camera is pointing up at it, what happens to the degree of the ellipse?'. I don't really know if i did do some of the ellipses correct since it was meant to be 2/3 of the actual sphere. Either way, i did make some mistakes with putting in the ellipses.

Wow thats a beautiful practise sheet!
Those sketches look really good!
I unfortunately cant answer your question right away, maybe you could search for some portrait reference with strong foreshortening and deconstruct it to see how the circle looks like!

Hi all
i added the jaw box onto the cranium mass with the first sphere & ellipse activity;
with the last post i questioned on the ellipse, mau gave the idea of deconstructing a face with an extreme angle to see how the ellipse ended up with the sphere. it actually does still hold true that its 2/3rds of the spheres height, the degree of the ellipse just gets squished down alot however the width of the ellipse never changes. I don't really know how i skipped on this however now i know! i quickly put a stock picture onto the page to deconstruct, the blue lines indicate the the size of the ellipse. (the deconstruction might not be the best sorry)

Aside from the whole ellipse problem, this exercise was alot harder than it seemed. sometimes i'd end up messing up my ellipses and others i'd end up flattening the sphere out. I didn't actually indicate all the feature placements on all the spheres since i ended up getting lazy. either way there are still alot of mistakes so i will practice my spheres!

Hi all,
it's been a few days since the last post, mostly because i've been practicing away at my forms and continuing with anatomy 2. i've ended up finishing the ear section. Although short, i've decided to go ahead and upload this;

the whole page is really unarrange, mostly because i'm lazy to move things around too much but also because it'll end up becoming slightly distorted. I felt like marc's way of demonstrating how to build up an ear was totally fine however i felt like i was really missing something. especially when drawing from all sorts of views.
I ended up trying to study the ear itself from all sorts of views, some of which are me trying to recall from memory and others are just observing. With this i noticed that I didn't really know how to approach studying art! if anyone has any good tips or videos on the subject of studying art please send them this way, it would be much appreciated.
I also tried to paint some of the ears which turned out fun however i didn't want to do all of them since it would take a longer time, neither do i know if the values are at all correct.

I think you did a really good job on those ears! The forms are really clear and I think the shading is pretty good too
Just one thing about the backside of the ear: try to make the connection to the head a little smaller and make it taper towards the head

I actually tried to find a real life reference to this, but typing in "ear backside" only results in disgusting fotos of some medical conditions of the ear, so you might want to skip that

@mau.wamp Thank you for the heads up mau! the ear connection will be corrected with the next study. Glad i'm not the only one who experiences some sort of medical conditions and whatnots when trying to search for references.

Hi all,
I went & finished another ear study;
The reason i've decided to upload another one of these is mostly because i was left with some questions, mostly on the studying process itself. I watched a few videos on how to study correctly and most brought back to observation itself. My question is do i deconstruct the ear first like a cranium into a sphere or draw out the form as is and simply observe what forms make it up (as done above)?
Since this is the second time i've uploaded an ear study i'll mix in a sketch i did after the study;
I left it just as a head since i was lazy & tired. I'm pretty excited about what is to come in anatomy 2, especially drawing an actual real head since most of what i draw is mostly simplified!

Personally I think the main reason ears look incorrect in drawings is the perspective. It's easy to tell when in ear is in the wrong angle compared to the head, so I think using a box first and then drawing from that is better. It might be beneficial to just focus on the form if you forget the different parts of the ear.

Hi all,
I've been pretty busy with art school, mostly with noses & trying to get a better grasp on them;

I felt really 50/50 with understanding noses, especially studying them. If there are any critiques, please send them this way.

The only thing that sticks out to me is the nose that is in grayscale a little below the colored nose to the right the wings of the nose look to be too high up and the nostrils connecting to the septum look unnatural to me. That's all that stuck out to me besides that these noses look good

@jpbennett02 thank you for the feedback! Now that i look at it, the skin attaching to the septum does look low or the wings look to high put. I'll keep this in mind for next time!

Hi all,
I've finished off some lip studies for anatomy 2;
I felt like some of these came out pretty bad especially the more extreme angles however i pushed ahead and got some stuff out of it. I feel like some forms fell flat aswell. Apart from that i'll probably go over the lips once more when i piece together a full portrait. If anybody has any critiques, they would be much appreciated!

Hi all,
I've done some eye studies;
I also decided to just put together the things that were covered in most of anatomy 1 and push myself to draw a portrait drawing. The reference used is to the left. I left everything to my observation however made quite alot of mistakes which left me to learn to be aware of some things such as the angle of the eyes! (hopefully i can apply it next time)
I most likely should not have done studies of individual eyes since it really isn't much to work with. i will do both eyes & the general structure around the eyes, that'll be for next time though! I only really have 1 section of anatomy 1 however would like to study some extra things & do some more studies of facial features since i feel that most of my studies i've done have left me lacking in some areas.
I also probably should have pushed myself to add values to some of the eyes to understand how lighting at least affects them.
That said, if anybody has any critiques or even good videos on the facial features, they would be much appreciated!
