I'm sure you probably looked and saw where the mistakes were so the only thing I'll say is that the face feels like it's at the wrong angle maybe it's the direction the eyes are looking since in the ref they are looking down. I would also recommend looking up Sinix on youtube he has videos on facial features and how to draw them by themselves that I think could be very helpful. Nice studies btw!

@jpbennett02 Firstly thank you for going out of your way to reply & yeah, the face itself does look like its at a wrong angle, i struggled with the eyes alot and moved on way too quickly. I actually have been looking up sinix quick tips when going through the facial features , i will once more go over them again! Although his paintings at the end of his quick tips are scarily good. i was thinking of doing a study of them but i felt like it was too much of a jump.

Sinix is very good at painting and drawing! you could do studies of how he approaches drawing and painting no matter the skill level and see if you can pull it off, you never know if you don't try and your welcome.

Hi all, i've done what i would call my first put together portrait drawing;

The final section of anatomy 1 had alot of content surprisingly and it took a while for some of it to sink in. There's alot of stuff i would personally like to improve. For instance, the planes of the head which i unfortunately mostly guessed and the hair which i didn't know how to approach. Doing this portrait made me realize i have a lot of things i want to work on before i move onto a new section. I will probably spend a bit more time just restudying individual features & study the planes of the head. As usual, critiques & any good videos to anything are welcomed.

I think you did a good job on the portrait even for guessing about where the planes are it looks solid

Hey all,
It's been a while since my last post, i've been working on the asaro head and i've decided to upload one of my studies;
This was a simplified way to approach painting the asaro head by using 3 values. I felt it did come out a bit lackluster in places. Since the planes can get a little complex it was a lot easier to take this approach for now. I ended up blending the edges softly to the places where i thought there was more skin instead of bonier areas of the face.

Studying in art is still a mystery to me unfortunately, i felt a little overwhelmed to do the whole asaro head at once and might have rushed & lost precision of the reference at the beginning. I'm going to keep going with the asaro head so posts will most likely be infrequent from me.

its a good start though I also didn't know how to study the Asaro head either, but I looked at a course by Marco Bucci that simplifies and explains the planes of the head to a point where they are mostly simple shapes while still keeping the structure of the face sound. He also breaks down each area of the head and the features before you put everything together all at once. I felt that trying to study the Asaro head just by itself was too daunting so I sought additional help to better simplify it and I can remember it because of how simple it was.

I didn't mean to sound like a walking ad for someone's video lessons lol but I just wanted to tell you how I went about learning the planes of the head. I felt like looking at all of them at once can be overwhelming imo. keep up the good practice!

Hi all,

I've been doing quite a few things, mostly to do with portraiture and whatnots and i just wanted to post a piece i ended up finishing;

I had alot of fun painting this sculpture, it's one of the rare occasions where i'll completely forget about self criticising myself and allow myself to freely make mistakes and see what comes out. I do want to post some of the asaro head studies that i managed to finish since a few of them came out quite interesting however i wanted to give this sculpture painting the spotlight
This is one of the few times i've actually used photoshop to finish a piece and it was alot of fun. The brushes felt superior to any digital painting software i've used so it was exciting to try new stuff out. I felt that my blending of colors was pretty bad so that'll be a thing i'll seek to improve.
Apart from that, i don't want to get too caught up in doing portraiture since i've been on this section for around a good 2 months now. I'll probably be moving on soon and will keep revisiting this since i want to keep improving!
If anybody has any videos on how to approach painting hair since i struggle quite a bit with approaching it, or any critiques, they would be much appreciated.

Hi all,

It's been a while since the last post since i've been pretty busy. I managed to get another portraiture done;

I was mainly inspired by others on the cubebrush forums to do some portraits. I hadn't really gone back and revisited portraiture in a while since i've wanted to take a break from it & move forward. I hadn't really done many portraits so i might spend some time to just finish some off and call it there for portraiture for now.

I've linked the original picture from which i referenced since i found alot of problems with my own. I've realised the proportions were quite a bit off & probably could have gone darker with some of the values. I probably could polish this up quite a bit & if anyone can catch anything & has critiques, they would be much appreciated as usual. Portraiture is a big challenge as usual and I've felt that this is the first real big jump from the other things that are in art school, either way it was actually pretty fun making this.

Apart from that i've moved onto perspective 2 & am working on the first assignment which is pretty fun.

I was also going to point out your values as well maybe pick a ref that doesn't have a large amount of the face blocked by almost pure black so that you can see the structure of the face more(not trying to be mean if it comes across that way). The overall head shape could be fixed as well so also next time try to have the ref and your drawing side by side at the same size so that you can compare measurements and drag your sketch on top of it to check for errors. hope this helps

@Kosmonaut i actually didn't think of overlaying nor leaving the drawing side by side, i must have been pretty gung-ho to forget about this. I think this will definitely help a ton for the next portrait i do. Thank you!

Hey all,
I finished another portrait today;

I've uploaded the original reference from which i worked from.
I went a bit darker with my dark values this time and it definitely gave a nicer read, along with overlaying to check for any proportions to which i might have messed up which gave a more accurate result.

The one thing i noticed is that my blending is pretty muddy. I don't know if Artschool goes over blending exercises (I might have seen a post on an exercise somewhere in the forums).

Another thing i may have messed up is the nose, i felt i went a tad bit too hard on the edges & probably overdid the lightness in some areas. So lots to work on for next time! (If anyone can spot anything / has any critiques they would be much appreciated).

you did go a little too light on the front-facing plane of the nose value-wise, and for having a smoother blend to the skin try using an airbrush to add a slight gradation between your values. everything else imo looks good so far.
