Yeah, I know what you mean. But my goal is to draw characters, so I concentrate on anatomy/figure almost all the time.

Term 5

I decided to start with character design. I really want to create my first character and at the same time see how I progressed in my skills. So it will be "my 1 year art progress" in Art School. (if i manage to complete character, of course )

So, here what i have at this point:

1) Character pose

2) Сlothes sketch, silhouette and final line art

Not satisfied with feet pose, maybe gonna change it.

Next part - hardest part. Shading and coloring.

This is the first time I'm trying to shade a character (before that I've only shaded simple shapes), so I'll be glad to see some critique on this. How it looks? Should it be lighter or darker?

Next step - make corrections and add lighting.

Looks great! Now I am not as far as you in class so you can take this with a grain of salt if you'd like. From what i noticed from my experience, the left arm has darker shading than the opposite side, which doesn't correlate with the rest of the image, since it seems the right side is mostly shaded. I would say the legs are a great area shaded due to the depth of shading with a dark background from clothing and lighter upfront on the skin. The last thing is the inner edge of the cape seems to be a little light on shading in comparison to other pieces. Hope that helps to start some small corrections. If not, listen to more experienced people. Looks awesome though, keep up the great work!

You correctly noticed that the right side is shaded more, because I plan to make the light source on the left side (towards the shoulder pad), so left hand will be lighter. + the color of the shadow on the skin will also be changed.
Cape are another problem. If I shade it more, I get a big dark area that blends into the right arm. Still think what to do with it.

I finally finished!
My first work and in the same time my "1 year progress in Art School". I think I used all the knowledge and skills that I have at the moment. Of course, it would be possible to render more, but I think this makes little sense, since I still do not have enough knowledge and experience for this. Especially for lighting.

Only thing I notice, not much a critique rather just analyzing: since a lot of her upper iris is visible and her pupils are mydriatic (dilated), she seems very alert on an adrenaline high, and her brows are neutral plus maybe a little contraction of the lower palpebral portion of her orbicularis oculi muscle so maybe she is scared?

Hi, I may be in Term 2 but I have something I want to say.

I understand this is your first character design but i feel you should try and experiment with particular feature manipulation. This can be done by doing some quick doodles/sketches of your character in different poses/expression and basically play around.

Here's a Proko vid that explain a bit better on analysing particular feature of a char.

But still, your first character drawing looks great! Keep it up!

For me she looks more surprised then scared. Maybe both at the same time. I had planned to draw just "believable" face... So, it is what it is

I actually drew 2 more poses and 1 outfit, but left them in the early sketch. I had a clear picture of the pose in my mind. I wanted a simple pose, but at the same time not boring.
