  • Thank you! I finally cleaned that up. Meanwhile started 3 more ..I have a habit of taking too long to finish a piece, then I lose interest in it and just start something else. I found 8 from recently i started and abandoned, that are decent enough to not delete, but not finished. There’s also been a number of drawings I felt I “outgrew” - became better before I finished them, and it would be easier to start from scratch than fix them. Anyone else thinking that?
  • Lady Death Fanart Collectible: Part 6 Polypaint and base Hi, it’s time to share with you another part of the process to create this fanart piece. Polypaint As this is my first collectible fanart I didn’t have previous experience with polypaint so I tried my best and played a bit with it.I wanted to give a ghostly and eerie look to Lady Death, she is beautiful and deadly, but at the end of the day she is a woman that died and was reborn at hell as an avenging spirit, that’s why I gave her skin tone a bluish very cold tone.As you will see I gave myself some creative freedom to deviate from the traditional color scheme that this characater has in comics and illustrations. To add a bit of sensuality by painting some freckles on the face and the chest. The dark nature of this character was the perfect excuse to gave her a kind of goth make up, very dark shadows around the eyes, blue lips and fingernails. I know that the original character includes sexy red lips but I wanted this girl to have a sexy but at the same time creepy look, that’s why we can see some thin veins emanating from her eyes. The biggest chromatic change I did for this character is at the hair. Lady Death has a characteristic white weavy hair but in my fanart I decided to gave her a very saturated blue color. The reason behind this wasn’t only an aesthetic choice. I want that the face area strongly pulls the attention of the viewer so this area needed a stronger contrast. Another reason is that I want her to have a more modern look, as I mentioned before, I’m strongly attracted to women with goth/punk look. I gave myself half an hour or more to analyse the work of experienced sculptors that create collectibles and I discovered that the use of darker values on the skin is often applied to create a greater sense of volume and three-dimensionality. I found that areas with heavy ambient occlusion are the perfect places to paint with darker colors in order to increase the separation between different forms. Even though she has a bluish skin tone, I used a bit of warmer hues in areas that, in real life, tend to go towards red and pink, this is very obvious in the nose, cheeks, and knuckles. Thinking with a logical mind it’s completely absurd to have warmer tones on the body of a zombie like creature but I didn’t want to limit myself by using only blue tones, it looks boring and artificial. In real life these colors are created by blood vessels in areas where the skin is very thin. ** Scythe **for her weapon I applied a cool gray with some warmer variations, this color scheme is influenced by the work of H.R giger. Base I’d like to talk about the design for the base which, to be honest, I forgot to develop along with the character. My main idea with the base is to show that Lady Death inhabits a very sterile and arid land, at the end of the day she is at hell. You can see a that she walks over dirt and rocks, a sign that she’s surrounded by death and loneliness. As part of the landscape we can see some bones and skulls to reinforce the idea of lack of living creatures, yet we can see three hands that try to reach her legs. This hands represent that all creatures are subordinated to her power and seek an evil blessing with a simple touch of the princess of the damned.1- The hand with skin burns represents the souls of those who are newcomers to hell, tortured souls that suffer for the sins comitted on earth.2- The hand with greenish rotten skin and pustules is the reminder of the decay that has infected the souls of those who have been trapped and have forgotten their humanity3- Last but not least, the hand of a demon shows that even dark creatures and entities bow before her presence. The cherry on the top, at least in my vision, are the simese twins that emerge from the ground, this malevolent creatures remind us that in hell there’s only perversion and any trace of innocence is lost. Thanks for reading till this pointI’m really happy to be very close to finish this creative journey, last but not least it’s mandatory to talk about splitting the sculpture in several pieces to be printed, this will be my last entry before showing the final rendered images. See yaMay Zbrush be with you

Outfits and rest is from imagination Something went wrong while installing system so we will have to wipe everything again... pc works but something is wrong. We will wait till internet is done and I will save everything on cloud this time Threads came out in eu. It's been 3 days and I had more engagement than after half a year on instagram. It feels really nice I hope it stays this way A portrait of old dude. It's the same character I posted a while ago. Inspired by Bayard Wu work. At first I thought of him as a bear but I named him Fenrir and I think wolf suits him better. Eye gave me a bit of hard time but I think it is fine now. I focused on face and forgot about area below. The way I draw hair clashes with greying hair. I had the same problem while doing Lohse's white hair. Does it looks like it is greying here? I love how desaturated red looks blue there. I keep lying to myself that I will use different color scheme but It all comes down to this blue and yellowish one it is just flipped this time Have a great day!

Latest piece of work. Admittedly this one was a little rushed to meet my deadline. But in the end I was able to finish it. A few things I’m not happy with is the front view on the girl, looks very poor, not fond of the style. Also had difficulty with positioning the brim of the referees cap, need improving with simple box forms I think. On a positive note I feel like my hatching is improving. Still getting to grips on when it’s appropriate to use them and not.

If anyone has tips on hatching that would be super. Thanks.

It looks like a lot of time and thought goes into these story boards. Good work. For hatching, I remember hearing that the directions have to match the plane they are on and all go the same direction. They should also start from the edge of something like a stair and get thinner as they go way from the edge (as you let off) maybe… . I think they are usually used for form rather than shadows. Like on the edges of muscles.

@chewitt1 Thanks for the feedback. I think you’re absolutely right on the hatching, I don’t know why I didn’t see it before. I think I’m getting confused with speed lines and hatching, but they are really 2 different things. I’ll definitely take that into consideration on my next price. Thanks!

@chewitt1 I took your suggestion and tried a quick face with hatching but used it more for form. I’m happy with the eyes, the neck not so much. Found it difficult to hatch such a large area and keeping the curved form of the neck. I’ll have to look up referencing I think.

Practicing face drawings using referencing as a guide. Main focus is emphasizing line weight and as always recently hatching.

This came out nice! I like this face
I think hatching on nose should be a bit tilted following form

Looks good! Have you taken a look at that without the darker paint behind the hatching? I am wondering how it looks in the shaded areas with only hatching. Either way, you art is really quite impressive.

Yeah the portrait based on the reference looks really good. I like the stylization. Also more hatching on its own. Maybe looking at some comic artist styles will help you decide to use hatching on its own or not. Sweeeeet

Thanks for both your feedback @patrycja.lerch and @chewitt1. I’ve taken both your advice and used it in this piece. Followed the form of the nose better than previous, looks much better now. Also tried just hatching as opposed to shading and hatching. Personally I like the the combo rather than hatching but perhaps that’s because the shading is more forgiving. I’ll keep experimenting but thanks heaps for the help guys!

New piece. Not very confident with female characters tbh. So this took a lot longer than it usually would. Had to play around with the eyes. Still not overly happy with it something feels off about them, just can’t quite pick it. Anyone got thoughts?

On a positive, I think the hair turned out pretty good for me. Also tried to use hatching sparingly for this piece, only use it for darker sections.

Any feedback welcome.

Hey nice work on the recent portraits!
If you are looking to improve your hatching you should checkout David Finch on yotube, he explains it pretty thoroughly.

Maybe it's the composition of the character. Just lacking some emotion/idea for me imo.

What I recommend is to do a bunch of random doodles/quick sketches and pick and refine a bunch of sketches that got you intrigued. Not sure how many sketches you have done but when I do cartoon art commission, I do LOADS of quick sketches (give it 3 mins each) with varying idea, send it to the commissioner and let him/her get the best of each sketch to make a more refined one.

Thanks @Gordon003, I did do a couple of quick sketches actually, but perhaps not enough, or perhaps I chose the boring one 😞. Yeah you are right I tend to play it safe with the expressions tbh, and her face is definitely lacking any sort of emotion. Thanks for the feedback.

Final page of my present to my partner. Little rushed in parts, and it definitely lacks some environment but had to cut corners to meet a deadline. I definitely held back with hatching with this page. Pretty happy with the speed lines however so that’s a plus.

Struggling with knowing when to use screen tones, specifically size wise.

Love the use of multiple long lines to show other competitors running faster than Aiko which you already mentioned.

Not too sure about screen tone but composition-wise, I recommend to not only do quick sketches but also try out different camera angles and ideas. For me, I feel it's more effective if you just show on the Aiko's eye rather than the whole face to show his sheer determination (extreme close-up shot).

I understand that you have to rushed to present your gift on time but do consider that quickly sketching and doodling random pose and camera angles can simulate your mind to go further and get unique perspective. hope that helps and your comics look very very good! congrats, man.

11 days later

That’s for the feedback @Gordon003. That’s a great point about Aiko eyes, I think that would have been the right way to go tbh.

I must admit I probably don’t experiment with different perspectives when doing a panel, more with single pieces. So I probably should start doing that.

Been a little distracted this last fortnight, Zelda is pulling my focus. Was only able to do one cell in my latest panel. So here’s a sneak peek.

19 days later

A little behind with posts, unfortunately Zelda is to blame.

Here is my latest piece. A gift to a work friend who got engaged. 15hr piece, I’m pretty pleased with the quality. If I had a criticism I think I played it pretty safe with the poses and camera angle. Not the most dynamic scene ever. If anyone has thoughts on what they would have done differently composition wise I’d love to hear. Cheers guys!

Great piece! I like these colors and details on crown. They look like they are scheming something
Is she a doctor or this is just a normal necklace?
You have a nice focus on the ring. He looks at her and she at the ring
I would change a pillow color so ring doesn't blend in so much
I don't know about composition. it's a hard thing to do. Maybe I would give them a bit more space. Jester is very close to the border

Great work and great gift!

Thanks patrycja, always helpful. Yes she is a doctor. I think initially I wanted the pillow white to tie the 2 people together, but now that you point it out the ring definitely gets lost in it, thanks.
