Here is the first stage of my Art War entry.

The character is named Chroma, and she is the princess of the astral elves. I'm going to make every aspect of her have a sort of color-shift, trying to somehow integrate a sort of glimmering rainbow effect on her dress, hair, and skin. I'm going to go as crazy with it as possible, like over the top bright and colorful. She's also going to be emitting spectral rainbow magic from her hands and eyes. She will be "saving the art world" by injecting color and brightness into the dark, gray world around her.

In the background, I'm going to keep it dull and use some very rigid mechanical designs (so fantasy good vs sci-fi evil) and have her being assaulted by robotic adversaries, but they will not be able to come close to her magic.

PS: I do have a preliminary character sheet, but it's on paper and I can't be bothered to upload it yet. It's sloppy and bad, as all my "traditional" art is, so you're not missing much

Just make sure you at least do some kind of digital line art overtop of your sketches to fit the requirement of showing the front and back view of your character concept before the final illustration.

Before continuing with what you have here, You should look at some reference for the anatomy of your character. I like the face but I feel you can go back and refine the body a bit more.

Playing with the shape of the dress now:

I decided to slightly change directions here. I renamed the piece and changed the character's look and purpose a bit.

The composition should look something like what I have below. The dark area is going to be filled with shadow creatures, all clambering over one another to try and drag down the girl. The background will be stars and nebulae.

Changed the name and story behind the character!

She is now called Starchild and is basically a personified "newborn" star who is traveling across the galaxy in search of a perfect nebula to consume, in order to move onto the next stage of her life. Along her journey, she crosses into dark space and encounters the night creatures, with whom she clashes.

Spoiler Alert: she defeats them all with her glorious star-shard and is named the galaxy's bravest hero.

I sketched out the shape of some of the "creatures of the night", a sort of shadow/nebula demon that is trying to capture the starchild and suck out her light. I wanted them all reaching towards her, clumsily climbing over one another.

I'm not quite sure how I want their faces to look, to keep them human-ish or make them more demonic, or how "defined" they will be when I'm finished, I just know I want their bodies to be coming in and out of a dark, smoky star-cloud.

In the meantime, I'll be messing with the fine detail of the lace on her torso and giving more shape to the demons.

I'd suggest making the faces more demonic, since she has a humanish one already. It will give the characters a nice contrast. :з

Here's where I'm at right now. The demon faces look kind of goofy right now, but I'm still playing with them

I was kind of dreading adding the detail to the figures around the outside, since I generally prefer painting pretty things, but I'm actually having an insane amount of fun on it right now!

Now I'm bummed since my work week starts tomorrow morning and I won't get to play with this 'til next "weekend". Sad times

This looks great! The contrast between her and the sea creatures is a really nice touch.
