First thing that came to mind is a mix between a couple of Bulgarian traditional things.
Kukers + Koledari + some traditional clothes. I'll try some other stuff later on.
Idea being that he's supposed to be protecting the land from dark spirits and such. Standard stuff.

Thanks guys! I'm glad you like my sketch, I'm gonna be following your threads too

Some quick refining on the mask and some sketches to get in the mood and figure out some things relating to the design direction.
Also those shapes at the lower left corner are Bulgarian patterns from the internets. I'll try to incorporate them into some of the bells and the clothes.

I really like the hand/arm design. Sometimes puppets can feel lifeless, but you've captured some excellent gestural feelings and have a nice flow of your lines. Would love to hear more about what a kuker or a koledari are, since I'm not familiar with them but they sound neat.

@stewart.mittnacht - Thanks for the kind words and the interest, I'll write up some stuff about the Kuker and the Koledari tomorrow (it's 3 am over here haha )

A generic, placeholder dark spirit that the main guy would be attacking or defending against. It would be where the dark cloud blobs are in the comps right now.
Also some quick comps from today. I'll definitely need to try out plenty more before I pick one to move forward with. Wouldn't want to rush this phase of the image. Second one came out very thick.

Still not 100% sure that this is the concept I'm going with for the contest but I like how it's going for now, so I might end up sticking with this.

Hey,
it's been quite a while, I've been busy with work and all sorts of things, but I'm back from the hiatus. I hope I'll be able to make up for the lost time and finish this before the deadline, even though there's a ton of work to be done.
Started the illustration yesterday, by cutting and pasting some parts of the character concept to speed the process up.
Added some background colors so I have a starting point for the atmosphere.
I think I have a pretty good idea where I want to take this image.

By the way, I remember there was a rule about a minimum of 70% of the character being shown. I think it should be alright as it is, but if anyone has any thoughts on that, let me know.

Some slight progress. Still at an early stage with the image. Probably tons of changes coming up. The second image is just an example of my process. I go back an forth between painting and defining the drawing. Ideally the drawing would be nailed at the beginning, however I'm rushing the process right now.
One major problem is that the character isn't taking up enough of the image. I think I have a good solution for that, but time's running out so I'm not sure I'll have time to apply it.

Another wip. Mostly noodling, lots of fog everywhere (I love painting in fog ), defining shapes and I also rotated and enlarged the canvas a bit and I think I prefer it this way.
The image is getting darker and darker. Gonna check how it looks on different devices.
Cant wait to get into the most important part of this character - the bells. Aand I'll also have to paint in a couple of evil spirits, just so everything feels nore finished.

I've altered the atosphere quite a bit. Here are some details so far. Render mode overdrive.
I was pleasantly surprised by the deadline extention. I'm confident I would have been done on time either way, but I would have had to sacrifice many hours of sleeping time .

There are lots of great entries.
