  • Thank you! I finally cleaned that up. Meanwhile started 3 more ..I have a habit of taking too long to finish a piece, then I lose interest in it and just start something else. I found 8 from recently i started and abandoned, that are decent enough to not delete, but not finished. There’s also been a number of drawings I felt I “outgrew” - became better before I finished them, and it would be easier to start from scratch than fix them. Anyone else thinking that?
  • Lady Death Fanart Collectible: Part 6 Polypaint and base Hi, it’s time to share with you another part of the process to create this fanart piece. Polypaint As this is my first collectible fanart I didn’t have previous experience with polypaint so I tried my best and played a bit with it.I wanted to give a ghostly and eerie look to Lady Death, she is beautiful and deadly, but at the end of the day she is a woman that died and was reborn at hell as an avenging spirit, that’s why I gave her skin tone a bluish very cold tone.As you will see I gave myself some creative freedom to deviate from the traditional color scheme that this characater has in comics and illustrations. To add a bit of sensuality by painting some freckles on the face and the chest. The dark nature of this character was the perfect excuse to gave her a kind of goth make up, very dark shadows around the eyes, blue lips and fingernails. I know that the original character includes sexy red lips but I wanted this girl to have a sexy but at the same time creepy look, that’s why we can see some thin veins emanating from her eyes. The biggest chromatic change I did for this character is at the hair. Lady Death has a characteristic white weavy hair but in my fanart I decided to gave her a very saturated blue color. The reason behind this wasn’t only an aesthetic choice. I want that the face area strongly pulls the attention of the viewer so this area needed a stronger contrast. Another reason is that I want her to have a more modern look, as I mentioned before, I’m strongly attracted to women with goth/punk look. I gave myself half an hour or more to analyse the work of experienced sculptors that create collectibles and I discovered that the use of darker values on the skin is often applied to create a greater sense of volume and three-dimensionality. I found that areas with heavy ambient occlusion are the perfect places to paint with darker colors in order to increase the separation between different forms. Even though she has a bluish skin tone, I used a bit of warmer hues in areas that, in real life, tend to go towards red and pink, this is very obvious in the nose, cheeks, and knuckles. Thinking with a logical mind it’s completely absurd to have warmer tones on the body of a zombie like creature but I didn’t want to limit myself by using only blue tones, it looks boring and artificial. In real life these colors are created by blood vessels in areas where the skin is very thin. ** Scythe **for her weapon I applied a cool gray with some warmer variations, this color scheme is influenced by the work of H.R giger. Base I’d like to talk about the design for the base which, to be honest, I forgot to develop along with the character. My main idea with the base is to show that Lady Death inhabits a very sterile and arid land, at the end of the day she is at hell. You can see a that she walks over dirt and rocks, a sign that she’s surrounded by death and loneliness. As part of the landscape we can see some bones and skulls to reinforce the idea of lack of living creatures, yet we can see three hands that try to reach her legs. This hands represent that all creatures are subordinated to her power and seek an evil blessing with a simple touch of the princess of the damned.1- The hand with skin burns represents the souls of those who are newcomers to hell, tortured souls that suffer for the sins comitted on earth.2- The hand with greenish rotten skin and pustules is the reminder of the decay that has infected the souls of those who have been trapped and have forgotten their humanity3- Last but not least, the hand of a demon shows that even dark creatures and entities bow before her presence. The cherry on the top, at least in my vision, are the simese twins that emerge from the ground, this malevolent creatures remind us that in hell there’s only perversion and any trace of innocence is lost. Thanks for reading till this pointI’m really happy to be very close to finish this creative journey, last but not least it’s mandatory to talk about splitting the sculpture in several pieces to be printed, this will be my last entry before showing the final rendered images. See yaMay Zbrush be with you

It feels really nice I hope it stays this way A portrait of old dude. It's the same character I posted a while ago. Inspired by Bayard Wu work. At first I thought of him as a bear but I named him Fenrir and I think wolf suits him better. Eye gave me a bit of hard time but I think it is fine now. I focused on face and forgot about area below. The way I draw hair clashes with greying hair. I had the same problem while doing Lohse's white hair. Does it looks like it is greying here? I love how desaturated red looks blue there. I keep lying to myself that I will use different color scheme but It all comes down to this blue and yellowish one it is just flipped this time Have a great day!

@twistedxp You can read how in the Rules section here and/or the first answer in the Q&A here.

@Kuhleesee Hi! So good to see you participating! Good question, its not stated explicitly in the rules, but we'll add it to the FAQ shortly. Yes, the character in the final illustration should be visible from head to toes - all in all, roughly at least 80% of the character should be visible.

@Bailey_Walker its a good idea, and definitely would be interesting to see, but the brief calls for a only single champion. However, you can include side/support (or enemy) characters in your concept sheet or illustration.

Hi
I would like to ask why my thread in ART WAR - 2D is a bit faded compare to other threads

That happens to all the topics you've already read. Only topics that are unread by you or have new posts are white.

Hi I was curious the Illustration dimensions are 2048x2048 minimum, and the concept sheet section just says 2048x2048 is that the minimum dimension? Feels kind of odd to make the concept sheet a square sheet instead of a rectangular sheet.

@purefire yes, that's right, for Final Illustration it's at least 2048x2048 pixels, while the Concept Sheet has to be 2048x2048 pixels. Usual concept sheets are rectangular to show different angles of character side by side - however, here you only need the front and the back, with added important sketches (or objects belonging to character etc.). It doesnt have to follow the 'usual' concept sheet style, what's important is all that's in there!

Can we go beyond 2048 pixels in portrait mode?
e.g. 3072 x 4096 pixels.

If allowed, will this be applicable for the Concept Sheet as well? or leave it as is i.e. 2048x2048 pixels.

@nevs36 I've literally just answered that in the post right above your question!
Exactly as it's stated in the first post in this topic - Final Illustration has to have at least 2048x2048 pixels (any format), while the Concept Sheet has to be exactly 2048x2048 pixels.

Thanks a million!
I shall now start off with my entry!

hi marc so glad to be part of cubebrush community,
for the contest is it really important to have facebook and twitter account and website

I'm confused about the 2D contest. It says to squeeze everything on one sheet (2048x2048) but I see a lot of artists posting their art on all different dimensions and separate sheets. Not complaining at all just wondering if I can do that too

@mandyberryart I think what you're seeing is people just posting their progress, such as sketches, thumbnails, etc.

In the end, when we post 2 IMAGES (1 CONCEPT SHEET, 1 ILLUSTRATION), you squeeze in all important sketches and other stuff you feel like showing into a 2048x2048 sheet, ALONG WITH THE FRONT+BACK of your character, and that becomes the CONCEPT SHEET you turn in.

your ILLUSTRATION needs to be AT LEAST 2048x2048.

How do I upload my sketches and concpet art on my froum. Just entered the CubeBrush community 1 hour ago and can´t figure out how to upload something. :expressionless:

There's a text box when you type, right? Directly above that box there's a line of symbols like B i " </> etc.
Hover your mouse over the icons. Next to </> there's a box with an arrow pointing up (upload). Click on that and choose from there what you want to do. When you hover your mouse over that icon it should say 'Upload' so you can't miss it.
If there's something else you need help with you can post it in the Help Center category.

13 days later

No photobashing or use of 3D? Aren't those the modern techniques concept artists are supposed to know or learn? Why not use what would help make a better image?

@marc, I've seen you use a lot of 3D in your images to great effect with a paintover in Photoshop, why have this requirement?

Can 2D painting be used in the 3D section? As in painting for the final image or a paintover and not just the texture? Are the two mediums allowed to mix for this competition other than in the buildup to the final image?

Just wondering if we have to write some sort of character background story? I'm entering for 2D illustration. It makes sense if its for 3D for character designing and such but illustration is an artwork, not concept art. So I'm quite confused when I see people doing illustration, writing a story plot???
I did check the brief and I don't see that we need to do so...
I don't mind doing it, just wondered if I need to

Writing a background story can help explain the story of your character a lot. See it as you selling your hero to the gaming company you are working for.
If it isn't a rule then you don't have to do it.

Hey Robert, no 3D can be visible for the 2D submissions and no 2D can be used for the 3D character itself (anything goes for the 3D entry's background as mentioned in the rules).

As far as your process, you can do whatever you want as long as we don't see it, basically. You can't mix the mediums but you could model something in 3D and use it as ref for your 2D submission, or render a scene and use the lighting as ref, etc. Just the same you might use google to look for refs. It's up to you to decide what you think can you get away with.

As long as the result is that we can't tell, what you do behind the scene is up to you, we can't police it.
