Daniel L. - Art School Journey (Reviewing Term 2)

Hello! my name is Daniel and i like to draw (as most of you reading probobly do!) I have been following Marc's courses for a few months now, but as of late I have really felt that something was missing in my Journey to become the best artist I can, you see I don't have a lot of art friends (don't feel bad for me, I still have friends) and thus nobody to really give helpfull criticism on my work :[ . so I thought I would join this forum and ask for criticism from people who also are doing their best to improve also!

side note: as of posting this I have just started term 4 about a week ago, and am going back to review and improve on some basics. such as anatomy of the head, torso, arms, and legs!

you can be as harsh and direct as possible when critisizing, trust me I can handle it! I really do strive to be better and thank you for reading, I really do appreciate it!

Hey every body! it's been a few days, I have been doing some studies and came across a few methods on how to draw the head, since I feel as though my portraits really need some work! so here are some sketches I have done today.

Here are some more head studies i have done today. you guys think I am ready to add to the challenge and learn about the Asaro Head?

A lot of these heads look very solid! I definitely recommend you to look into the Asaro head now!

Hey everybody! it's been a while, so far i have been mainly studying how to draw heads, with some full body anatomy on the side. here is a portrait I did, hope you like it, this was a little out of my comfort zone because i am not used to painting at all! but i had a lot of fun. all criticism is welcome!

Nice job with this, Dan! I can see that the anatomy and the values are quite far from the reference but it still reads nicely as a different character.
I personally don't put too much emphasis on getting my studies to look exactly like the reference anatomically, but I do think values are pretty important.

Something I've noticed ( and maybe you do this as well ) is that I tend to pick shadow values that are too light and light values that are too dark. To overcome this you should consciously try to pick colors that look darker and lighter.
Also I would recommend setting the background color to be about the same as the reference. The value / color of the background can make you perceive values differently as well.

Overall you're doing well! Keep up the studies!

I agree, I definetely will try to push the values more in my next one, and push the contrast. Also i never thought about changing the color of the background, so thanks for tip!

Here are some more portraits i did today, i think i need to take a moment and study the structure of the face again before painting it like this. This was super fun, but I definetely have some gaps in my knowledge. anyways any tips and tutorials y'all can give?
p.s. the top left gives me nightmares

Nice job Dan! These portraits are looking very good! The values are definitely starting to get better.

For tips on portraits I recommend searching up Ahmed Aldoori on YouTube. I personally find the way he draws very appealing and he does have some videos on how he does these studies.

Hey! I know it's been a while. School has been pretty heavy in the past few months and barely have time to finish much stuff atm. But i've still been practicing every day! gonna do a few more weeks of practicing the head then ima try to expand onto more anatomy studies like the torso, legs, arms, and etc.
ofc, i am still open criticism!
