Here is a challenge for you :
Brush Economy. No smooth shading. But thinking about every brush stroke you lay down. Not sure how you doing these studies, but when you zoom in on Sargents work, what makes it authentic is the decisions of each brush strokes he lays down.

I noticed, especially for digital painting, we seems to let the tools such as smudging or blending do the work for us, instead of doing the opposite, thinking about the brush marks you put down, thinking about the direction of the stroke etc.

That's a great challenge Brian, I'll definitely try this, one of the things that I love about Sargent is like you said that he only lays down the information we need to interpret whats he's trying to paint or draw. I'll try it on my studies from today, I'll take some process pictures as well!

14/25 this one was especially hard, frontal portraits are the worse for me, specially men, specially old men with facial hair and wrinkles

Thanks, Yes!, I still have to finish a curse or list of topics that I started doing back in 2016 (I still have left the portrait studies in values, then 25 value studies with whole body and then 50 composition studies from the masters)
However I already planed the next studies after this and all of them or most of them are in color, I already have my Gurney book ready and all

And most importantly Im applying this stuff in my "real" portfolio so hopefully I start getting better freelance jobs at mid 2017.

And yes I google this paintings, most of them are after Sargent because he's my favorite portrait artist, however the last one is after a recommendation that I saw on instagram.
