  • Thank you! I finally cleaned that up. Meanwhile started 3 more ..I have a habit of taking too long to finish a piece, then I lose interest in it and just start something else. I found 8 from recently i started and abandoned, that are decent enough to not delete, but not finished. There’s also been a number of drawings I felt I “outgrew” - became better before I finished them, and it would be easier to start from scratch than fix them. Anyone else thinking that?
  • Lady Death Fanart Collectible: Part 6 Polypaint and base Hi, it’s time to share with you another part of the process to create this fanart piece. Polypaint As this is my first collectible fanart I didn’t have previous experience with polypaint so I tried my best and played a bit with it.I wanted to give a ghostly and eerie look to Lady Death, she is beautiful and deadly, but at the end of the day she is a woman that died and was reborn at hell as an avenging spirit, that’s why I gave her skin tone a bluish very cold tone.As you will see I gave myself some creative freedom to deviate from the traditional color scheme that this characater has in comics and illustrations. To add a bit of sensuality by painting some freckles on the face and the chest. The dark nature of this character was the perfect excuse to gave her a kind of goth make up, very dark shadows around the eyes, blue lips and fingernails. I know that the original character includes sexy red lips but I wanted this girl to have a sexy but at the same time creepy look, that’s why we can see some thin veins emanating from her eyes. The biggest chromatic change I did for this character is at the hair. Lady Death has a characteristic white weavy hair but in my fanart I decided to gave her a very saturated blue color. The reason behind this wasn’t only an aesthetic choice. I want that the face area strongly pulls the attention of the viewer so this area needed a stronger contrast. Another reason is that I want her to have a more modern look, as I mentioned before, I’m strongly attracted to women with goth/punk look. I gave myself half an hour or more to analyse the work of experienced sculptors that create collectibles and I discovered that the use of darker values on the skin is often applied to create a greater sense of volume and three-dimensionality. I found that areas with heavy ambient occlusion are the perfect places to paint with darker colors in order to increase the separation between different forms. Even though she has a bluish skin tone, I used a bit of warmer hues in areas that, in real life, tend to go towards red and pink, this is very obvious in the nose, cheeks, and knuckles. Thinking with a logical mind it’s completely absurd to have warmer tones on the body of a zombie like creature but I didn’t want to limit myself by using only blue tones, it looks boring and artificial. In real life these colors are created by blood vessels in areas where the skin is very thin. ** Scythe **for her weapon I applied a cool gray with some warmer variations, this color scheme is influenced by the work of H.R giger. Base I’d like to talk about the design for the base which, to be honest, I forgot to develop along with the character. My main idea with the base is to show that Lady Death inhabits a very sterile and arid land, at the end of the day she is at hell. You can see a that she walks over dirt and rocks, a sign that she’s surrounded by death and loneliness. As part of the landscape we can see some bones and skulls to reinforce the idea of lack of living creatures, yet we can see three hands that try to reach her legs. This hands represent that all creatures are subordinated to her power and seek an evil blessing with a simple touch of the princess of the damned.1- The hand with skin burns represents the souls of those who are newcomers to hell, tortured souls that suffer for the sins comitted on earth.2- The hand with greenish rotten skin and pustules is the reminder of the decay that has infected the souls of those who have been trapped and have forgotten their humanity3- Last but not least, the hand of a demon shows that even dark creatures and entities bow before her presence. The cherry on the top, at least in my vision, are the simese twins that emerge from the ground, this malevolent creatures remind us that in hell there’s only perversion and any trace of innocence is lost. Thanks for reading till this pointI’m really happy to be very close to finish this creative journey, last but not least it’s mandatory to talk about splitting the sculpture in several pieces to be printed, this will be my last entry before showing the final rendered images. See yaMay Zbrush be with you

At first I thought of him as a bear but I named him Fenrir and I think wolf suits him better. Eye gave me a bit of hard time but I think it is fine now. I focused on face and forgot about area below. The way I draw hair clashes with greying hair. I had the same problem while doing Lohse's white hair. Does it looks like it is greying here? I love how desaturated red looks blue there. I keep lying to myself that I will use different color scheme but It all comes down to this blue and yellowish one it is just flipped this time Have a great day!

Volume study! I struggled a lot with the first ones, but I felt much more comfortable with the last ones. Even the lines I made with the tablet are more firm and strong, so I am quite happy

I am still struggling with the hip joints, I am not very sure of where to put them, specially when the bodies are twisted and they are not visible... In addition, I am not sure about the action line in the 2nd pose, or where to put the ovals in the man pose... If anyone could help me with those, I would be grateful (=______=U)

Also, I realized too late that I should not draw the cylinders when they are overlapped (sorry about this, the lines can be quite confusing when I overlap two cylinders...I went again over the first ones and corrected almost all of them, but one or two still have that defect).

I am not very sure about this one either... Maybe the arms shouldn't be flat cylinders:

I think he said it in the video for this lesson to draw a square/rectangle around the hips and ribcage. Then the shoulder joints go somewhere around the top corners of the ribcage square and the hip joints go somewhere in the bottom 1/3 of the hip square. He even showed when he put ovals instead, he thought about the squares for placement of the joints.

You've definitely got a clear understand of the volumes - you can feel each pose even when the cylinders aren't overlapped.
As @l0rclz33 said, using squares or rectangles can help a lot with the placement of the joints. The square/cube shapes can help more - I personally find it easier to split them, circles are more difficult. The hips lie about 1/3 from the bottom of the ellipse just outside

I think i should have them higher than drawn, but the sentiment is there :stuck_out_tongue: Its the same with cubes/squares/rectangles also.

I don't think it's unrealistic, but it depends on you, how disciplined you are and how quickly you will grasp and apply the things that are taught. As for how much time I spent on each, it's hard to say. I did it in a fluid way where I focused on the subjects that interested me the most or I felt would be the most beneficial, mostly anatomy. So I sort of went back and forth between the terms, if that makes sense.

Oooh, now that you mention it, I remember that he indeed drawed the hip points after drawing a cage! Thank you! (I am Spanish, so I sometimes miss some phrases in the videos... my fault). You're absolutely right, thank you! I will watch it again.

Thank you! I thought about making it the way you say (fluid), but I know so little about everything that I decided at last watching the chapters in order... even with Photoshop I learned a couple of new things, so it was worth it, yay! ^^

This week is being a little bit messy, but I managed to practice some gesture drawing... (I am aware of Marc telling us that the absolute acceptable maximum would be 2 min timing per drawing, but I used some YouTube videos, which changed pictures each certain time, and it is so funny that I keep drawing with their 5 an 10 min poses too...).

Not a lot to comment about them, but I wanted to leave my progress here anyway... I consider a "succesful" one if I can understand the pose only looking at the drawing and not at the model. At this point, I struggle A LOT with 30 seconds sketches, I feel better about the 1 minute ones, and quite confortable with 2 min sketches. I am also horrible at drawing hands (=______=) We'll see if all of that improves with practice!

Hi everyone... I am not dead, It's just that I got stuck in the perspective drawing of the room (too much lines, since I added a lot od shelves) and I unexpectedly got a new job, so I have very little time to digi in it. I am still trying to finish it and show it to you. Until then, I did some other perspective exercises on pictures, and I have a couple of doubts if anyone can help U___U Thank you in advance.

8 months later

Hi everybody... I am alive. I suddently had to take a very hard job for 7 months, and I had to stop the course progress because I was too tired to watch the classes withour falling asleep each time u_______u but I am back, and I want to push it and to achieve my goal, no matter how much time it takes. I leave here my perspective room exercise... It's not perfect at all, I still have lots of understanding problems. I post it without finishing it, because I want to practise perspective and not to get stuck in the details of the room.

I had problems understanding the perspective of the books that I was trying to draw in the shelves, so I did some sketches aside to undersand their final form. I will finish this piece in a future, but for now, I think it's time to continue and try with more perspective points...

Great to have you back!
and good job on the perspective assignements!

Thank you a lot! I hope to continue without stopping this time!

The more I practice with the vanishing points and the guide lines, the more trouble I find... But that's good, I guess. It means I'm learning. If anyone could help me with these, I would be very grateful u.u Thank you in advance!

EDIT: When I say that I don't know where to trace the pink line of the roof, I mean that I really don't know if I traced correctly the green line that measures the height of the roof either...

To detect the center of a plane in perspective just make a cross in the plan... upper left to lower right and upper right to lower left. Where those lines meet... there is your center  Hope you understand my strange explanation
Then you can decide on the height of the roof center and draw the line... cause height and edge are defined by then

As Julia already said, drawing the diagonals gives you the middle point in perspective.
For the roof I'd advise you to construct it out of a box as shown below:

Hope that helps

By the way, I think it's great that you post your stuff on the forums with specific questions! That makes it super easy for everybody else to give feedback! Keep that up!

Thank you very much! Yes, your explanation is perfectly understandable. I know my questions are noob ones, thank you very much for your help  I will keep practising!

Oh thank you! I see it super clear thanks to your drawings and Julia's explanation. Thank you for spending your time helping, it's truly appreciated  Let's see if I can make this correctly at last!

ART SCHOOL SCHEDULE FOR TERMS 1 AND 2

Hello everyone!
I've been searching through the forum to see if anyone has answered it already (sorry if someone has... I really didn't find it). So I am asking here:

I am currently finishing Term 1 of the Art School. I have already downloaded Mark schedules as a guide, but I am still quite lost in terms of time management. I will explain this a little bit:

I am almost starting from zero, so I really can't skip any term, and I am watching the videos in order and doing the tasks that Mark gives with the course. BUT:
When I started, my daily practice was that. The video + assignments that come with the course.
Later, I added a daily anatomy practice with quick poses (half an hour to an hour), and drawing some cylinder volumes on pictures.
I am adding now the 5 min observation practice (stare at an object for 5 min, trying to improve my mental library, studying how light interacts with it, its form, its volume...).
Also, I've added some daily practice about finding the perspective lines and vanishing points in pictures.

I know, these are all very little time consuming, but I realized that in the upcoming chapters, there will be more and more daily practices, and all of them will be DAILY practices. Also, when I am practicing anatomy for example, I start to enjoy it a lot when I've been drawing for 15 minutes, when my hand is more trained, and then I just want to continue and continue, instead of watching the video or practicing other exercises. So, I really need a realistic schedule.

The awesome schedules that Mark gives to us, are schedules in which there are some hours dedicated to further content that I have not seen in the course yet (for example, landscapes or light+color), so they are more like a guide for me, but not a schedule that I can already use. I don't know how much time would be appropiate to dedicate to each term, how to practice each term's content (amount of time and quantity of exercises per day) to optimize my practice time and not getting lost... I know that some of you are thinking "dedicate to each term the amount of time you need until you feel comfortable", but I would help to have sort of a "reasonable range" of things that should be practiced in a given number of hours of practice. For example, is it there any moment along the course when we need to stop doing daily anatomy practice and skip to landscape practice instead? Do I need to practice Term 1 repeatedly for one month, for example, before starting Term 2? Would you recommend any kind of timetable for those of us that haven't studied the majority of the course content yet? It's utterly difficult to make a timetable when each new video keeps adding new exercises without stopping to do the previous ones.

Sorry if my explanation isn't very clear, the fact that my main language isn't English doesn't help, hehe... Thank you in advance for any advice. It will be very welcome.

What you are about to read is my personal opinion:
I dont think that Marcs schedule is particularly useful. It makes you focus on a bunch of stuff basically at the same time. Depending on the time you‘ve got at hand, you might practise 2-3 different topics each day. I personally dont have that much time to dedicate to my practise (2-3hours max per day). I would rather focus these hours on one topic and really try to understand it and make progress.

Also doing multiple things a day, makes it hard to manage WHAT you are actually going to practise (just „Anatomy“ wont cut it, what exact thing do you need to practise in order to get better at that particular moment?)
I feel like my approach to practise is very strict and systematic, so all these different topics would make planning even more confusing. (But everyone has different preferences when it comes to that)

If you want to know what I do (also pretty much a beginner)
- I pick one module of the term I am currently working on
- I work through the theoretical input Marc gives in his videos
- I try to figure out what the core skills are that will actually improve my art (e.g. in Anatomy: the basic structure of the head)
- then I try to find an order to practise these 2-4 skills that chronologically make sense
- then I practise each skill for about 15-20 hours
- that leaves me with about 5-6 weeks of practise for each module (not term!)
- yes it takes a lot of time, but I‘ve seen good improvement doing this...

The way I do things is by far not perfect and if anyone would like to give some advice, I‘d be very happy to hear it

Hope that helps you a little bit with your question. Alsways note that everybody is different and prefers different ways of practise, so try out a lot of things and see what fits you the most.

Thank you a lot! It helps as a general timing guide, indeed. Because I set my initial goals as 1 module per week/ 2 weeks... And it wasn't realistic at all. I will try to continue with your method, and see if I can adapt it to me without wasting my time in pointless practice, but practicing the core content instead. Let's see how it turns out! ^^

I did something similar before I branched off the terms around term 6, Im still learning the materials but its less focused on the classes and more on what i find interesting. maybe i would see better results if i continued the course however, when I followed a strict schedule i found myself being burnt out multiple times.

For me it was one class each month (not one term) to really digest the material with no breaks in between. So my advice to you is to be flexible with your schedule - don't be so focused on getting through the class as much as absorbing the information. Also remember to take breaks from classwork, especially in the early classes as those as very technical, which doesn't leave much room for creativity.

this is my personal opinion as well but I figured it might help.

1 month later

Thank you a lot for your experience and advice! In my case, being a newbie, I reached a point where I felt quite lost without a strict schedule, because I don't know enough to know how much time each task should last in a regular classroom (sorry, I don't know how to explain it better). So I an trying with Term 2 all of the advice I can get from more experienced people than me. I feel you about being burnt out, there are some classes that I find harder to learn and practice, and not having a classroom makes very difficult for me to find the perseverance and discipline to practice the ones I feel more stuck with, which leads to frustration and slow improvement. I know the only who can help me about being disciplined is me myself, but having a schedule to don't get lost with my favorite parts and lack practice time for the boring ones, has been helpful in my case ^^
