The following are Shade Studies
The way I practice shade is by tracing over an image to give me a blank template. This way I don't have to spend hours on getting the proportions and contour lines accurate. This gives me more time to focus on shade by closely studying the reference image. Each images takes me weeks, spending an average of 20 hours on each. In my early attempts I gave up early, spending about 5 to 10 hours. Then I decided to not give up until its complete which greatly increased the quality.

Tips
Draw the shade studies more like the previous exercises that you focused on line of action, shapes and 3D forms
Shadows more binary, more like drawing the outside lines as shapes too, but within, and where light shapes / shadows met, push the shadow (core shadow)
also if you work from mid gray instead of 100% bright white, you'll likely control contrasts better
