  • Thank you! I finally cleaned that up. Meanwhile started 3 more ..I have a habit of taking too long to finish a piece, then I lose interest in it and just start something else. I found 8 from recently i started and abandoned, that are decent enough to not delete, but not finished. There’s also been a number of drawings I felt I “outgrew” - became better before I finished them, and it would be easier to start from scratch than fix them. Anyone else thinking that?
  • Lady Death Fanart Collectible: Part 6 Polypaint and base Hi, it’s time to share with you another part of the process to create this fanart piece. Polypaint As this is my first collectible fanart I didn’t have previous experience with polypaint so I tried my best and played a bit with it.I wanted to give a ghostly and eerie look to Lady Death, she is beautiful and deadly, but at the end of the day she is a woman that died and was reborn at hell as an avenging spirit, that’s why I gave her skin tone a bluish very cold tone.As you will see I gave myself some creative freedom to deviate from the traditional color scheme that this characater has in comics and illustrations.To add a bit of sensuality by painting some freckles on the face and the chest. The dark nature of this character was the perfect excuse to gave her a kind of goth make up, very dark shadows around the eyes, blue lips and fingernails. I know that the original character includes sexy red lips but I wanted this girl to have a sexy but at the same time creepy look, that’s why we can see some thin veins emanating from her eyes. The biggest chromatic change I did for this character is at the hair. Lady Death has a characteristic white weavy hair but in my fanart I decided to gave her a very saturated blue color.The reason behind this wasn’t only an aesthetic choice. I want that the face area strongly pulls the attention of the viewer so this area needed a stronger contrast. Another reason is that I want her to have a more modern look, as I mentioned before, I’m strongly attracted to women with goth/punk look. I gave myself half an hour or more to analyse the work of experienced sculptors that create collectibles and I discovered that the use of darker values on the skin is often applied to create a greater sense of volume and three-dimensionality. I found that areas with heavy ambient occlusion are the perfect places to paint with darker colors in order to increase the separation between different forms. Even though she has a bluish skin tone, I used a bit of warmer hues in areas that, in real life, tend to go towards red and pink, this is very obvious in the nose, cheeks, and knuckles. Thinking with a logical mind it’s completely absurd to have warmer tones on the body of a zombie like creature but I didn’t want to limit myself by using only blue tones, it looks boring and artificial. In real life these colors are created by blood vessels in areas where the skin is very thin. ** Scythe **for her weapon I applied a cool gray with some warmer variations, this color scheme is influenced by the work of H.R giger. Base I’d like to talk about the design for the base which, to be honest, I forgot to develop along with the character.My main idea with the base is to show that Lady Death inhabits a very sterile and arid land, at the end of the day she is at hell.You can see a that she walks over dirt and rocks, a sign that she’s surrounded by death and loneliness. As part of the landscape we can see some bones and skulls to reinforce the idea of lack of living creatures, yet we can see three hands that try to reach her legs.This hands represent that all creatures are subordinated to her power and seek an evil blessing with a simple touch of the princess of the damned.1- The hand with skin burns represents the souls of those who are newcomers to hell, tortured souls that suffer for the sins comitted on earth.2- The hand with greenish rotten skin and pustules is the reminder of the decay that has infected the souls of those who have been trapped and have forgotten their humanity3- Last but not least, the hand of a demon shows that even dark creatures and entities bow before her presence. The cherry on the top, at least in my vision, are the simese twins that emerge from the ground, this malevolent creatures remind us that in hell there’s only perversion and any trace of innocence is lost. Poses are from refs but I look at refs for a while and then try to do it myself and look it up if needed. It feels really nice I hope it stays this way A portrait of old dude. It's the same character I posted a while ago. Inspired by Bayard Wu work. At first I thought of him as a bear but I named him Fenrir and I think wolf suits him better. Eye gave me a bit of hard time but I think it is fine now. I focused on face and forgot about area below. The way I draw hair clashes with greying hair. I had the same problem while doing Lohse's white hair. Does it looks like it is greying here? I love how desaturated red looks blue there. I keep lying to myself that I will use different color scheme but It all comes down to this blue and yellowish one it is just flipped this time Have a great day!

Hey there, it’s been a while since my last post here in the forums (again), but after I finished Term 5, I thought it might be interesting, and helpful to share my assignments with you. Since I completed all these already, I’m planning to go over individual steps and share my workflow and thought process with you. First, I will go over one of my creature designs, and after this, I’ll do the same for one of my character designs. I hope everything is understandable, English is not my native language, but if something is unclear feel free to ask. Of course, if you have any feedback, I would love to hear it.

Creature Step 1:
So basically the first thing I do is read the assignments. In this case, there is nothing too specific other than create a believable fantasy creature. I usually follow the first idea that comes in my mind. For this, I went with a medium to large carnivore that can fly and lives in a jungle environment. After this, I go on Pinterest and collect references. In this case different birds, dinosaurs and big cats basically everything that reminds of my first idea.

Creature Step 2:
After I have some pictures, I start doing thumbnails. At this stage, everything goes. While I’m doing these, I have my reference images open to get more inspiration. For these thumbnails, I used mostly the lasso tool to create a silhouette and some basic shading to get some internal details. For this stage, I like to use just three values to focus really on the shapes. For my final design, I decided to work with thumbnail 4.

Creature Step 3:
Now I have an idea of what my final design could look like. But before I start drawing, I go back and see if I need more specific reference images. I like to start my final piece with a sketch. This sketch can be very rough or refined depending on how comfortable I’m moving on with the design. Other than that, I try to refine the anatomy and proportion, but things can and will change later on. Also, I like to have my thumbnail somewhere on my canvas so I can refer back to it when I need it.

Creature Step 4:
After I’m happy with my sketch, I use the lasso tool once again to create a silhouette. I can use this later for masking different layers. Then I block in the colours I want to use. In this case, I was aiming for an almost triade colour palette with green as my primary colour. I decided to use these colours after I saw the picture of a tropical bird with similar colours.

Creature Step 5:
I paint in some basic shadows and lights on an extra layer using a mask so I don’t paint outside of my creature. I usually keep working in colour because I find it much harder to add colours after a complete grayscale painting. But I still check my values using a layer filled with black and set to saturation. If I turn this layer on I can see the image in black and white.

Creature Step 6:
From there it's »just« refining things. I try to get rid of the linework by using sharp and soft edges to show the forms of what I'm painting. Also, I built up my shadows and lights and decrease my brush size for smaller details. Because the head is, in this case, the focal point I try to start there and put the most detail around the head area. Also, it's worth mentioning that it's never too late for adjustments but more on that in the next step.

Creature Step 7:
Because the wings were something that was bothering me a lot, I had to make several changes to them. For now, I decided to remove them altogether and work on the arms and legs that were covered by the large feathers. By doing this, I got a better understanding of how the feathers form the wings on the arms. For this step, I took a closer look into different dinosaurs with wings and how they are structured. I think it is important to change things that are not working until you are satisfied with the result.

Creature Step 8:
To speed up the process, I used a photo for the final wings. Before I painted over the photo, I adjusted the value, colour and saturation to match the rest of my piece. After this, I painted in some more feathers to blend in the photo with the rest. By the way, this is not the only photo I used. For the head, I did the same thing with the difference that I changed the layer mode to get some happy accidents

Creature Step 9:
For some reasons I really like adding rim lights to my paintings. It makes everything looks more 3D, and it can help with the readability too. I usually put in blue light from behind and try to imagine where the light can hit the object. I try to avoid contouring everything because then the opposite occurs, and it makes everything flatter. Then some final adjustments to the light and colour using Curves and Hue/Saturation and the creature itself is complete.

Creature Step 10:
For the final step, I add a shadow on the ground and add some colour to my background. Then I paint in some dust particles and brighten some parts behind the creature. And last but not least I make a new layer set to overlay, fill it with 50% grey, add a noise filter and lower the opacity. Its something I almost always do because it brings everything together. And there is the final image.

One thing i would say though is that the angle of the tail seems a bit unnatural to me. The tail in your thumbnails has a nice curve to it but in your final image it almost takes a 90 degree turn. I don't know if this was intentional or not but I didn't see you mention it in any of your posts.

Thank you! And the angle in the tail is partly intentional. Because the tail is supposed to lie on the ground, I made the angle as it is, but it might be a bit too extreme. Also, I think the perspective in the tail is slightly off maybe that contributes to that as well.

2 months later

Character Design:
So before the year ends I wanted to show you one of the character designs I did for Term 5. It has been a couple of months since I did this, so, unfortunately, I can’t remember every thought and step I did for this piece, but it was fun to look back at this. As for her story: She is a young woman living and travelling around during the American frontier, fighting and helping others for their freedom.

Character Step 1:
So the way I started this project is very similar to the creature, read the assignment, look for references, start with thumbnails. This time though I started with rough sketches instead of the silhouette for the thumbnails.

Character Step 2:
Before I started with the final concept, I did some exploration sketches for her pose. They allowed me to see more of her personality. I could have pushed these more, and unfortunately, I ended up with a pretty generic pose, but it’s a good way to get to know your character.

Character Step 3:
Because of my theme, I focused a lot on her overall silhouette. I decided to make her hat much larger, and I gave her a riding skirt to make her silhouette a bit more unique.

Character Step 4:
I gave her a horse even though this was not planned initially. Because I am not too familiar with drawing horses, I was looking for some good references with a similar perspective. So I found myself in Red Dead Redemption 2 looking for a horse as my reference. (Videogames are so much more than entertainment. :D)

Character Step 5:
As I started painting I focused on the basic shapes and adding smaller ones for folds or other details.

Character Step 6:
I started adding a light source. Because of her big hat, this was not an easy task for me. I wanted the cast shadow across her chest but not on the entire body, so my light source had to be relatively low and close to her.

Character Step 7:
For the final polish, I made everything brighter. I added some fog between the character and the horse to separate them a bit more. Also, I added a cast shadow on the ground, and if you have trouble as I had with that, you can use something like Blender or even toys to help you out with the light and shadows.
