So I was wondering. I am going through term 2, still mostly focusing on head studies and some shading. I still havent touched photoshop 2 or visual 2. But I really want to improve my background drawing and landscape skills - or at least I am a little worried I may be lagging in that regard

So I ask the community, if it is worthwhile to study a little bit more about some basic architectural styles while I do term 2 or if I should just focus on cubes and the assignments. The thing is, my visual vocabulary for environments is kinda empty, so I feel I need to at least get the basic anatomy of what makes a house a house - beyond the symbol. Same thing with a medieval wall. I might think some super simple castle wall in my head but that is far from appealing and so, is a big part of why I usually shy away from any heavier perspective work. Plus, I am not sure I know how to detail those kinds of drawing

Any input is highly appreciated, cheers!

It is definitely good to study architectural styles but instead of studying all of it at once just study the style you want for a current piece. Collect as much reference images of the style whether it's Gothic, Persian, Art Nouveau, Mayan, etc., then spend some time observing their shape language and maybe even copying the reference or doodling small buildings/scenes with what you've observed. Small details like props can be covered in the reference images you find. You can look up pictures of the lifestyle of whoever would live in the scene or pictures of what sort of event might be happening. If you want to show details like wood, stone, or other textures then you'll probably want to practice copying textures on to simple objects like boxes or spheres to know how to do them.

My bruh, i have the same issue and i keep putting off learning proper environment drawing cus im like maybe we'll get to it later in the course XD

There's been a few resources i've been meaning to utilize but didnt have time/or forgot when i did have time lol. and by sharing them with u i now remember i should take a look at em XDDDD i rly need to work on my buildings

you can also move ahead in the course if you feel comfortable as you can always go back and redo the assignments. im in like term 4 now but just went back and practiced a bit of perspective yesterday from like term 2.

Nice work! for the first painting of the man watch out for the arm length and also making sure the skin has enough saturation . The lighting and shading looks really good! keep it up

As per the advice, I will definitely be implementing some architecture, and some nature studies into the process. I'm going to start with some gothic and middle eastern architecture, I read they are very related, and some good old fashioned medieval-ish and fantasy stuff to my studies, I think having a theme like that will really help as it gives the study a purpose beyond just "apply perspective"

So clip studio is highly recommended by a lot of people so I wanted to give it a try (was really cheap at discount when I got it too!)

Was actually pretty fun once I got the hang of it, followed a couple of tutorials because it's quite different with all its brush settings being very involved, but once I got the hang of it, decided to do a portrait study. I heavily referenced but used construction first then tried putting serious thought into the type of light (kind of cool, with warm shadows and desaturated highlights) and tried selecting colors accordingly (no sampling) using the pencil brush and then the "thick paint" brush (really cool effects with that one - the canvas texture and ability to blend like in physical media - I guess anyways
So here's the result, more or less 60 min, pretty fun

I have photoshop and use it for some of the assignments but i mostly use clip studio paint and its a fantastic piece of software, really great for illustration work and easy to use. You definitely have a great instinct for painting.

I don't think it will harm your development to put some focus on learning other things such as environments/architecture. Especially if your feeling inspired to do so.

I did a quick paint over here Snakker, I hope you don't mind. I didn't use the reference I just went off of memory. The main things I focused on here was the perspective of the mouth. For 3/4 view when we only see part of the far side of the face, we will only see part of the lips as well, part of it is going to be wrapped around and hidden by the middle portion of the lip. Also I adjusted the perspective on the eyes a bit, and tried to give them one eye distance between them. The other main thing I focused on was giving her a bit more forehead. I made a few other adjustments here or there but hopefully that helps a bit!

Thanks for pointing these out, I appreciate the paintover ! I do tend to struggle with lips in 3/4 view. I do also think though that the distance of her eyes in the paintover look a bit too wide, as the perspective makes them look closer in 3/4 view

I also noticed now that I pulled that ear a bit too far back and made her mandible a bit too long

CONGRATS MAN! I remember when I first upgraded to a Intous from a Wacom Bamboo Fun (Think it was from 2008/9), I'm also happy they're still making the pro, still have mine in my cupboard from 2014 (I think) Can it still have a wireless module? because I'd highly recommend it if it within reasonable price and reach, the model I have was a ltd edition that came with it all those years ago battery life was great from what I remember too!

Also love this kind of synthesis between porcelain dolls and cybernetics (I think) very Ghost in the Shell: Innocence, or at least reminds me of that!

*edit, just wanted to add I'd highly recommend using the flex nibs if you can get them at reasonable price or even in stock, bought a stupid amount of them over Christmas, since they were at a "reasonable" price, relatively speaking, they're the silicon tipped nibs, they have great friction on the surface.

This version has bluetooth out of the box, and thanks for the tip, I'll definitely look them up. Loving it so far, works flawlessly and has a nice feeling to it
