Question: how will country identity weighted on familiarity be judged?

I'm asking in the way that the world powers presently and across history are more recognizable than other countries. Like for example if someone drew a bald eagle with the red white and blue on his chest or a Mecha Samurai you would instantly know it's USA or Japan, vs designing a country with little to no international media history from the middle of Africa or Eurasia. (Togo/Burkina Faso/Rwanda/Latvia/Moldova,etc; just as examples)

Really excited to get started. Question about representing the countries flag:

I want to design an Australian Aboriginal character for my entry. Do I incorporate the Australian flag or the Aboriginal flag? Does incorporating the flag mean just the colours or can it be the symbols on the flag?

@yoji Hi! The judges are well aware not all countries are popular and easily recognizable. All countries are welcome and will be judged based on your design decisions, rather than the popularity of the country.
You are free to show and explain your country specific design elements during your process, in your Art War topic. Also, including and highlighting them in your concept sheet is a great way to make sure they are noticed!

@naomi.h.mcleod either is good. As for flag colors / symbols, it's up to your best judgement. You can but don't have to use all of the flag elements. The entry will be judged on how creatively you used it and how clear your design is in regards to representing your chosen country.

@alexcrushart everything in your entry has to be created by you!

Ehm... xD But you could do something in fantasy and SciFi and you don't have to use national symbols. You could just use cultural aspects and colors of a country. 😄

for the illustration part is it ok if my character is visible from above the knees or is that still not enough?

@daarkneit roughly at least 80% of the character should be visible. Anything less than 80% will be penalized.

Can I just clarify:

"Failure to follow any of these rules will disqualify you from winning"

Does that mean that failure to follow any of these rules prevents you from being selected for the round I finalists?
The problem I brought up last time was that a few entries that were clearly not attacking or defending made it into the first 30, which I believe wasn't fair.

@moirae no, it will prevent you from winning, which is Final round, with prizes.
The round 1 finalists last year all made pieces that the judges considered exceptional despite not following the brief 100%. However, not following the brief completely meant they couldn't win the competition even if they were great otherwise.

@Acolet: If, by your own admission, they cannot win, why are they gifted a place in the next round? There are only a finite number of spots, all you are doing is blocking other people from winning.

As I said last time, if an artist accepts a commission and ignores their employer's brief they don't get paid.

It's just so soul crushing to work so hard on a piece, pouring many hours into it, following the rules, and to find several slots of the 30 finalists filled with pieces that have ignored rules that you have bent over backwards to fulfil. Please help me understand your reasoning.

@moirae Judging is based on how well the topic is represented, overall quality and skills displayed as well as the "wow" factor. The judges carefully select the pieces they are most impressed with based on these criteria.
I understand where you are coming from, but If a piece is selected into finalist round, it's because the judges considered it, based on these criteria, better than the other entries. It is never 'blocking' anyone else's place.

Sorry to chime into this conversation suddenly but basically what you said is its better to make a better looking piece and ignore some rules and not follow rules perfectly and let the quality suffer instead?

Even though this "wow" factor isn't mentioned in the brief? it's like a hidden criteria.

The assumption is that all selected for the next round have a chance of moving on, is that not the case?

Is it the same judges all the way through, or do cubebrush staff break it down to 30 entrants and then present it to the named judges? (that does happen in some competitions, particularly those with loads of entrants)

@dreamsequenz Yes, there is a concept sheet this time, it's all under 2D requirements.
