  • Thank you! I finally cleaned that up. Meanwhile started 3 more ..I have a habit of taking too long to finish a piece, then I lose interest in it and just start something else. I found 8 from recently i started and abandoned, that are decent enough to not delete, but not finished. There’s also been a number of drawings I felt I “outgrew” - became better before I finished them, and it would be easier to start from scratch than fix them. Anyone else thinking that?
  • Lady Death Fanart Collectible: Part 6 Polypaint and base Hi, it’s time to share with you another part of the process to create this fanart piece. Polypaint As this is my first collectible fanart I didn’t have previous experience with polypaint so I tried my best and played a bit with it.I wanted to give a ghostly and eerie look to Lady Death, she is beautiful and deadly, but at the end of the day she is a woman that died and was reborn at hell as an avenging spirit, that’s why I gave her skin tone a bluish very cold tone.As you will see I gave myself some creative freedom to deviate from the traditional color scheme that this characater has in comics and illustrations. To add a bit of sensuality by painting some freckles on the face and the chest. The dark nature of this character was the perfect excuse to gave her a kind of goth make up, very dark shadows around the eyes, blue lips and fingernails. I know that the original character includes sexy red lips but I wanted this girl to have a sexy but at the same time creepy look, that’s why we can see some thin veins emanating from her eyes. The biggest chromatic change I did for this character is at the hair. Lady Death has a characteristic white weavy hair but in my fanart I decided to gave her a very saturated blue color. The reason behind this wasn’t only an aesthetic choice. I want that the face area strongly pulls the attention of the viewer so this area needed a stronger contrast. Another reason is that I want her to have a more modern look, as I mentioned before, I’m strongly attracted to women with goth/punk look. I gave myself half an hour or more to analyse the work of experienced sculptors that create collectibles and I discovered that the use of darker values on the skin is often applied to create a greater sense of volume and three-dimensionality. I found that areas with heavy ambient occlusion are the perfect places to paint with darker colors in order to increase the separation between different forms. Even though she has a bluish skin tone, I used a bit of warmer hues in areas that, in real life, tend to go towards red and pink, this is very obvious in the nose, cheeks, and knuckles. Thinking with a logical mind it’s completely absurd to have warmer tones on the body of a zombie like creature but I didn’t want to limit myself by using only blue tones, it looks boring and artificial. In real life these colors are created by blood vessels in areas where the skin is very thin. ** Scythe **for her weapon I applied a cool gray with some warmer variations, this color scheme is influenced by the work of H.R giger. Base I’d like to talk about the design for the base which, to be honest, I forgot to develop along with the character. My main idea with the base is to show that Lady Death inhabits a very sterile and arid land, at the end of the day she is at hell. You can see a that she walks over dirt and rocks, a sign that she’s surrounded by death and loneliness. As part of the landscape we can see some bones and skulls to reinforce the idea of lack of living creatures, yet we can see three hands that try to reach her legs. This hands represent that all creatures are subordinated to her power and seek an evil blessing with a simple touch of the princess of the damned.1- The hand with skin burns represents the souls of those who are newcomers to hell, tortured souls that suffer for the sins comitted on earth.2- The hand with greenish rotten skin and pustules is the reminder of the decay that has infected the souls of those who have been trapped and have forgotten their humanity3- Last but not least, the hand of a demon shows that even dark creatures and entities bow before her presence. The cherry on the top, at least in my vision, are the simese twins that emerge from the ground, this malevolent creatures remind us that in hell there’s only perversion and any trace of innocence is lost. Thanks for reading till this pointI’m really happy to be very close to finish this creative journey, last but not least it’s mandatory to talk about splitting the sculpture in several pieces to be printed, this will be my last entry before showing the final rendered images. See yaMay Zbrush be with you

It feels really nice I hope it stays this way A portrait of old dude. It's the same character I posted a while ago. Inspired by Bayard Wu work. At first I thought of him as a bear but I named him Fenrir and I think wolf suits him better. Eye gave me a bit of hard time but I think it is fine now. I focused on face and forgot about area below. The way I draw hair clashes with greying hair. I had the same problem while doing Lohse's white hair. Does it looks like it is greying here? I love how desaturated red looks blue there. I keep lying to myself that I will use different color scheme but It all comes down to this blue and yellowish one it is just flipped this time Have a great day!

where i send the art? im chilean can i participate?

back here, in the 'rules' section, it states how to enter! good luck!

Hello! this is awesome! just one question, since the brief is vague enough ( ) Can we go ahead and add to the lore/story, like give the characters and the story more personality? pursue developing motives for each faction and protagonize/antagonize any of them? thanks.

You can do whatever you want as long as the submission follows the requirements/brief

Hi there, quick question- for the 2D entries, do they have to be done digitally or will traditional entries be accepted as well? I tried looking for the answer and couldn't find it. Wishing everyone all of the luck!

You have to submit digital images with your submission but you can do a portion, if not most of it with traditional media. No problem.

Concept sheet is required, or can be put to work without it?

It's part of the final submission, just as important as the final illustration.

Hello, thanks for the awesome challenge! I had one quick question:

For the personal details, is twitter an absolute mandatory requirement?
Unfortunately I've never used it and don't have one

Thanks for the reply! Yes, I did gather that the images posted had to be digital images but wasn't totally clear if I could submit for example, a scanned piece done in water color or something similar to that.

Hola! Revisé las bases y tampoco encuentro límite de nacionalidad. Por lo que creo que no debería haber problema
Suerte en la guerra!

Hey just a random small comment, it is kind of looking like the submission requirements for the 2d and 3d submissions might be flipped. I see the 2d section commenting about showing the front and back of the final design, while 3d talks about many sketches and images. This may of course also just be an issue with my computer screwing with things because of script stopper.

Or perhaps you guys are looking for some really detailed concept sheets for the 2d submissions!

What is considered as "final submision" ? last post in the topic ? or first post ? or do we send the whole work after we finish it ? Meaning, when do we need to follow the dimensional requirements, and where do we send both , character sheet and illustration with our informations ?

You can edit any post, so just edit your first post in your topic and upload your 2 final pieces, the final illustration and the concept sheet, with back and front view and any other important design. The 2 final pieces need to follow the dimensional requirements.

You can find a character sheet exemple here.

I've got some questions:
1. Can you base your characters off mythological figures/gods? Or do they have to be completely original?
2. What's the maximum canvas size?

Thanks!

  1. You can use them as reference but it wouldn't be a character design if you're going to copy an existing character. That would be considered > fan art < It has to be an original character.

  2. For now there's no limit on maximum canvas size but don't go crazy with the size. Keep in mind that it has to be uploaded on the forums.

I like to use photos that I take myself to wrap over my characters with the warp tool. It's Matte painting. Is this a problem since you said no photos? I mean I can just take the picture and draw it over. But at that point either would create the same result. An example is here http://jago1996.com/comic/an-overturned-jeep/
I drew all the objects and things in the scene. Then I mixed textured brushes and manipulated imagery to make a unique feel.

This seems like a very fun challenge, i would love to (win that cintiq xD ) participate but my only drawing experience so far is sketching boxes... i don't think that's going to get me far in the competition. Good luck to anyone who submits!

Hey, you won't know unless you try! So many levels are participating, you should too!

When it says "Show the front and back of your final design(...)" : What does "front and back" mean exactly?

I might give it a try, do you need to make a character turn around? i've been seeing people talking about; "show front and back" so im assuming thats for reference for other artists in case the design wins?

@heroshyn Your entry must include a concept sheet that showcases your kickass design from front and back, as well as any other key sketches that are part of the design AND a final illustration which presents your design in illustration.
Front and back is sufficient, you don't have to make a full turnaround.
You can read the first post in this topic for full information on entry requirements :).

Great contest here!
Just a question: Are references allowed? (Pose references, etc)

@lajoan yes, of course! If you want some inspiration, many people show their reference boards in their topics

does the final illustration have to be full body? i remember in the old forums that was a requirement sometimes. thanks!

may we create 2 characters? of course it would count as a single submission but i would really like to work on a concept that involves partners who work together as a single hero.

How will we submit our final pieces?
Everything says what they need to be but I don't see anything that says where we post them.
Sorry for the trouble I'm just confused and want to make sure i do it right

You post your final piece in the topic you create with all of the process and sketch work.

@twistedxp You can read how in the Rules section here and/or the first answer in the Q&A here.

@Kuhleesee Hi! So good to see you participating! Good question, its not stated explicitly in the rules, but we'll add it to the FAQ shortly. Yes, the character in the final illustration should be visible from head to toes - all in all, roughly at least 80% of the character should be visible.

@Bailey_Walker its a good idea, and definitely would be interesting to see, but the brief calls for a only single champion. However, you can include side/support (or enemy) characters in your concept sheet or illustration.

Hi
I would like to ask why my thread in ART WAR - 2D is a bit faded compare to other threads

That happens to all the topics you've already read. Only topics that are unread by you or have new posts are white.

Hi I was curious the Illustration dimensions are 2048x2048 minimum, and the concept sheet section just says 2048x2048 is that the minimum dimension? Feels kind of odd to make the concept sheet a square sheet instead of a rectangular sheet.

@purefire yes, that's right, for Final Illustration it's at least 2048x2048 pixels, while the Concept Sheet has to be 2048x2048 pixels. Usual concept sheets are rectangular to show different angles of character side by side - however, here you only need the front and the back, with added important sketches (or objects belonging to character etc.). It doesnt have to follow the 'usual' concept sheet style, what's important is all that's in there!

Can we go beyond 2048 pixels in portrait mode?
e.g. 3072 x 4096 pixels.

If allowed, will this be applicable for the Concept Sheet as well? or leave it as is i.e. 2048x2048 pixels.
