  • Thank you! I finally cleaned that up. Meanwhile started 3 more ..I have a habit of taking too long to finish a piece, then I lose interest in it and just start something else. I found 8 from recently i started and abandoned, that are decent enough to not delete, but not finished. There’s also been a number of drawings I felt I “outgrew” - became better before I finished them, and it would be easier to start from scratch than fix them. Anyone else thinking that?
  • Lady Death Fanart Collectible: Part 6 Polypaint and base Hi, it’s time to share with you another part of the process to create this fanart piece. Polypaint As this is my first collectible fanart I didn’t have previous experience with polypaint so I tried my best and played a bit with it.I wanted to give a ghostly and eerie look to Lady Death, she is beautiful and deadly, but at the end of the day she is a woman that died and was reborn at hell as an avenging spirit, that’s why I gave her skin tone a bluish very cold tone.As you will see I gave myself some creative freedom to deviate from the traditional color scheme that this characater has in comics and illustrations. To add a bit of sensuality by painting some freckles on the face and the chest. The dark nature of this character was the perfect excuse to gave her a kind of goth make up, very dark shadows around the eyes, blue lips and fingernails. I know that the original character includes sexy red lips but I wanted this girl to have a sexy but at the same time creepy look, that’s why we can see some thin veins emanating from her eyes. The biggest chromatic change I did for this character is at the hair. Lady Death has a characteristic white weavy hair but in my fanart I decided to gave her a very saturated blue color. The reason behind this wasn’t only an aesthetic choice. I want that the face area strongly pulls the attention of the viewer so this area needed a stronger contrast. Another reason is that I want her to have a more modern look, as I mentioned before, I’m strongly attracted to women with goth/punk look. I gave myself half an hour or more to analyse the work of experienced sculptors that create collectibles and I discovered that the use of darker values on the skin is often applied to create a greater sense of volume and three-dimensionality. I found that areas with heavy ambient occlusion are the perfect places to paint with darker colors in order to increase the separation between different forms. Even though she has a bluish skin tone, I used a bit of warmer hues in areas that, in real life, tend to go towards red and pink, this is very obvious in the nose, cheeks, and knuckles. Thinking with a logical mind it’s completely absurd to have warmer tones on the body of a zombie like creature but I didn’t want to limit myself by using only blue tones, it looks boring and artificial. In real life these colors are created by blood vessels in areas where the skin is very thin. ** Scythe **for her weapon I applied a cool gray with some warmer variations, this color scheme is influenced by the work of H.R giger. Base I’d like to talk about the design for the base which, to be honest, I forgot to develop along with the character. My main idea with the base is to show that Lady Death inhabits a very sterile and arid land, at the end of the day she is at hell. You can see a that she walks over dirt and rocks, a sign that she’s surrounded by death and loneliness. As part of the landscape we can see some bones and skulls to reinforce the idea of lack of living creatures, yet we can see three hands that try to reach her legs. This hands represent that all creatures are subordinated to her power and seek an evil blessing with a simple touch of the princess of the damned.1- The hand with skin burns represents the souls of those who are newcomers to hell, tortured souls that suffer for the sins comitted on earth.2- The hand with greenish rotten skin and pustules is the reminder of the decay that has infected the souls of those who have been trapped and have forgotten their humanity3- Last but not least, the hand of a demon shows that even dark creatures and entities bow before her presence. The cherry on the top, at least in my vision, are the simese twins that emerge from the ground, this malevolent creatures remind us that in hell there’s only perversion and any trace of innocence is lost. Thanks for reading till this pointI’m really happy to be very close to finish this creative journey, last but not least it’s mandatory to talk about splitting the sculpture in several pieces to be printed, this will be my last entry before showing the final rendered images. See yaMay Zbrush be with you

It feels really nice I hope it stays this way A portrait of old dude. It's the same character I posted a while ago. Inspired by Bayard Wu work. At first I thought of him as a bear but I named him Fenrir and I think wolf suits him better. Eye gave me a bit of hard time but I think it is fine now. I focused on face and forgot about area below. The way I draw hair clashes with greying hair. I had the same problem while doing Lohse's white hair. Does it looks like it is greying here? I love how desaturated red looks blue there. I keep lying to myself that I will use different color scheme but It all comes down to this blue and yellowish one it is just flipped this time Have a great day!

lol you left the grind? when? where? XD

these look great btw!

hehe, Thanks. Truth be told I had some stuff to take care of these days, so I slowed a bit. But it's true I never really stop, I try to do at least a bit per day (usually at night when everything is quiet and peaceful).

The grind never stops!

Cloth exercice from artist reference, 4 out of 5.

Decided to go for something more simple, back to Toriyama's style. Nera from Dragon quest 5. I think I've mentioned it before but I really enjoy Toriyama's simple yet pleasent to the eye designs.

I had to rework proportions a bit, since this original design has an almost chibi big head proportion to it. I know there are other versions of the design wich have different proportions and more elaborate textures for the clothes, but I wanted to go with one of the original pieces.

And so, we went through the now common pipeline, body sketch, clothes sketch, inking, tones

And finally shadows and details

Really happy how this one turned out, I think I have the pipeline for these practices well established now. I feel the character fits into the design really well too.

Also worked on the next manga page. Got some feedback about how the white outline for characters makes it feel like they are "stickers" on the panels, which is true, though I kinda had to include it to provide more clarity, since without them, the feedback was that they were easily confused with the BGs, due to the heavy use of tones and grays.

I doubled the ink ont he first panel to give it the feeling of a "tremor", though not sure if it had the desired effect.

I do plan to try a different style eventually, To try to limit myself to pure black and white (and few tones), which I think will resolve the issue to some degree, though I'm still thinking about it.

As of right now, I personally like this style, and I feel like it also makes it feel kind of different, since anyone looking at one of these pages will easily recoginze it.

Nothing urgent, I'll still try out different things and see how they work out.

Final exercice of cloth from artist reference 5 of 5. At least for now. I think next is to start with anatomy 2.

Went with Ryne from FF14 for this study. I like the character design simplicty, and it seemed like a good target for some simple practice. Needed a bit of a break from challenges (which I still had with the manga), so went for something interesting cloth wise but rather simple to address.

I also absolutely loved this particular artist's rendition of the character.

And so, we go through the now usual sketch, ink, tones, shadows pipeline process.

And boom, final one of this series done

And of course, been hard at work at the manga as well. Finished one more page. Only one more to finish chapter 23, and then translation, art cover, a few details, and I can upload it as scheduled on 8/20.

Really liked how some of the effects turned out, such as the BG on the first panel and the light effects. I also took a quick peek at some of the first chapters and, ho boy, have we come a long way!

And that's it for now! Still got a lot more to do! thanks for dropping by!

8 days later

Wew, had to take a little break to wrap up chapter 23 and write the script for 24 and get the draft and work going. Not to mention real life work which always takes a lot of time.

Also started video on Anatomy 2 in Term 3. And oh boy was there a lot to unpack here.

Now, I LOVE the human anatomy, and though I've done some independent stuedies, I had never had someone sit down and help me break down the different muscle groups like Marc did.

It was fascinating and incredibly useful! I can see gaps in my understanding I had not noticed before. Proportions for many muscles finally make sense, and I'm eager to start applying this new found knowledge to see how it works out.

But first, before I jump into the exercices, I went back and and did a little study to review the whole thing so I can really learn and remember most of the bones and muscles explained in this chapter.

I'll continue with the exercies as per the companion guide next.

During this break, I got to do a lot of work on the manga, if you have followed it in webtoon, you probably already saw all these, but still wanted to share some of the work done so far:

Cover art. Did it fairly quickly, still imitating Toriyama's style, kinda obvious with the high contrast coloring  :

And final page of the chapter. Wanted a high view of the field. Wasn't sure of how much detail to pack in, but I think it turned out pretty good!:

Also did a few profile sketches to keep practicing the different face parts, proportions and simplified inking. highly stylized of course, but still trying to pay attention to the individual face parts.

That's it for now! Back into the grind! Got a lot of stuff to do!

Thanks for dropping!

yooooo that cover looks bomb!

love how you did the lightning!

I like the cover. Is the series inspired by Dragon Ball Z or Dragon Quest? The environmental destruction looks very nice and detailed. The face drawings look great.

Thanks everyone! Notifications don't seem to be working, so I hadn't had a chance to reply!

@mitsuki-youko Thanks! I learned a bit about making shiny lightings, it's subtle, but it's there, closer to the fist. Glad people liked the cover!

@kohkeeree I appreciate it! Funny thing, we seem to be our worst critics. I actually feel I fall behind with the amount of work I do at times, so comments like yours are very recomforting. I need to remind myself we all go at our own pace.

@gregorya Thanks! The series is indeed inspired in general by 90s anime, from the action elements to the romcom pieces and all in between. And of course I've always been a huge fan of Toriyama's style, so there are heavy influences in my work. The main character being a dead giveaway, though I do try to take pieces from different artists for different things. For example, most of the girls I draw have styles from different sources. In general I try to imitate and learn from the great ones as a basis (Toriyama, Oda, Arakawa, etc etc) and try to add a bit in between from my end on how I'd like things to be. The destruction piece was quite a challenge, since perspective is not my forte, but I do like how it turned out and environments do seem to be getting easier with every piece!

Still grinding in here for Anatomy for term 3!

First did a few of the primitive exercices as instructed. Wasn't sure on what to do, so just did random stuff and slowly drifted to anatomy, practicing some of the lessons learned so far.

Then did an exercice with Arnold, since there is little question on how ripped mister olimpia is.

Finally, since I was very excited about what I've been learning, I wanted to apply it with some characters to see how it worked out. Decided to copy the girl and remove some of the sketchwork. I'm actually surprised and how well it's all looking!

Oh, and almost forgot. Since I started work on chapter 23, here's the progress on the first page. For all I keep saying I'd like to try other styles... I keep circling back to the usual pipeline, as I really like how it looks.

Thanks for dropping! Back into the grind we go!

Rough couple of days, kinda put the course on hold for a few days. Still worked on the manga though.

Did the next cloth excerice as indicated in the companion guide.

Fairly straightforward, I clearly need to practice this type of shading more, and her right leg turned out funky. Folds seem ok though, and I got some good practice for gradient shading.

Not much else to say, it's a good thing Marc made me go back and retry this excercice again, it's good to keep practicing fundamentals, and it seems I was getting rusty with this technique after focusing on cell shading.

That's it for now. Leaving a few more manga panels here, though I need to keep practicing more.

Really like how the expression turned out on this one

Thanks for dropping by, I'm off to grind some more! Gota keep practicing!

This is looking very professional!

@mitsuki-youko, @patrycja.lerch, @snakker Thanks everyone! Sounds like it's an acceptable state, but I'll keep working to improve it.

Next in the list of the course companion guide is to do a bust from imagination. I've been kinda doing these, but I figured I would try to do a more detailed one for a change and also try to "ink" it as part of the inktober challenge.

I also needed to do a bit of a look design for one of the characters for an upcoming chapter, so it all works out.

Not sure if inktober has any particular rules other than just use black and white "ink"? hopefully it can be digitial since I don't really have physical ink.. or any practice with physical ink...
So anyway, here's the character bust potrait sketch, I'll try to start inking it tomorrow.

I assume I can also do several ink pieces. I do want to get some practice with pure BW ink and this is the perfect time to try it. The potrait is fairly simple, since it's only intended to be an exercice, but I'd like to try something more dynamic as well.

Next is Zbrush, which I'll take a look at, but most likely skip, and even more anatomy practice.

Also working hard on the manga! but only one more page to share for now.

That's about it. Back into the grind!

@patrycja.lerch Thanks!

Couldn't sleep well last night, so ended up trying to ink the sketch.

It was certainly an interesting experience and a lot of fun to dedicate more detail to a sinle piece!

I first tried to do a lot of cross hatch, but then I inked over that and liked better the high contrast of pure black and white. I also refrained from using any type of gray scale, since it is supposed to be only ink.

So first piece for inktober! (And also the bust from memory exercice Marc's course asked for).

Also been hard at the manga. I've been working on my time/quality ratio, and I think so far it's working out fairly well. So far each page takes about 4.5-5.5 hours in average, which is pretty decent and work well with my schedule.

That's it for now! Thanks for dropping by! I'm off to the grind!

Hey that’s some great use of black and white!
