Hey so I have been contacted from a small game company for a one time commission. So far things seem legit but according to them I will be paid after I send them the file. There is also a contract.
Since I have no experience with these things I wanted to know if this is how things work with freelance artists and game companies.

Thanks in advance!

Thank you for sharing! I will heed the advice!

Usually it's via PayPal, and unless it's a very big company you should ask for portions of the payment at different key milestones. Or at the very least only send the high res image after they pay you, and only send them thumbnail versions of the WIPs (something they can't realisticly use commercially in case they decide to run)

This way they can't bail on you at the end, and they can't easily request infinite revisions.

Thank you Marc! Especially for taking the time to reply!

Unfortunatly I have already signed a contract that states a specific date of payment after completion and the company named on the contract seems to be a larger publisher than the one who contacted me. I will have to assume that in larger companies the payment has to go though payroll/accounting.
If things dont work out that will definitely be a lesson learned!
