Hey @mmatias.mail!

We've got a similar backstory when it comes to art - I took a 6 year long art break in my 20s and have decided to really get back into it in 2020. Your artwork (pre-art school I mean) is very promising and your foundations are solid enough that you stand to gain the most from the Art School program.

As for your homework, it's fantastic! Your gesture drawings and perspective pieces are just sizzling with potential, and you rarely see that level of care put into them. I love your line quality and attention to cast shadows.

Keep doing (and sharing) the assignments, as you'll never stop learning things and they are one of the more valuable aspects of Art School. Once you get past the first few assignments, make up your own homework and keep striving for quality pieces like these ones.

Finally, to answer your question about scale, 1 point perspective is sort of flat-looking for any polished artwork and it's difficult to convey scale. However, as long as things are in proportions relative to each other, you can transform/stretch the image in any axis while maintaining the same "correct" perspective because the vanishing point remains unaffected.

Your bedroom picture could easily be stretched vertically by 20%, I tried it and it felt a touch better to me. Also (and I know this is outside of the scope of the homework), you can give it a spherical distortion and it looks SUPER COOL.

Anyway, I'm done ranting. I just wanna reiterate that I love your work so far. Keep it coming

Hey Vonschlippe!

Glad to see someone who's gone through something similar, I honestly felt like it was too late to get back into art but I'm so glad I made the decision to get back into it, definitely something I would regret not pursuing.

Thanks for your feedback and the tips! You've definitely helped with the scale issue, totally forgot that you could do that with digital pieces . Also the transform trick is AMESOME! Reminds me of a fisheye lens and makes it way more dynamic!

Can't wait to keep going through more of the subjects, seeing the work from some of you more experienced artists is way too inspiring!

Hi Miguel! Your homework assignments look incredible already! Looks like you understand all the fundamentals with ease and are applying an artistic touch to everything. I am really looking forward to seeing you at the streams and witnessing what you will come up with for the later terms.

Thanks WeirdOwl! I hope I can show something good for the streams!! I'll probably submit some assignments in the next week or two!

1 month later

Happy New Year everyone! Hope the holidays have been going well. I spent the last month or so working on perspective 2 as well as learning how to paint!

Perspective 2-1

Kept it to some simple geometric shapes on this one just to get a feel for 3 point perspective. I think its a huge step up from 2 point in terms of wrapping my brain around it :joy:

Perspective 2-2

Tried something more refined here, went for that imposing wall/gate prompt. The thumbnail for this was really good but I realised as I went that the vanishing point in the sky caused a tonne of distortion. Especially towards the edges of the artwork!

Thought I'd throw this Genshin fanart up as well as I feel like its a good representation of my skill right now. Spent ages on this with a lot of trial and error but it was a good experience learning how to render which I feel is definitely my weakest point right now. I also got to try out the polishing tips from Marc's new video, which definitely pushed the piece in terms of contrast. Probably a bunch of value/lighting issues in here that I can't see though, any feedback would be great!

Perspective 2-3
Went for a bridge scene on this one and tried to tilt the horizon line. Might have bitten off more than I can chew here, did my best to hash out any structural issues but I may have missed some things. I'm also having trouble with the lighting setup, I feel like its incorrect on the bridge in the middle. I'll probably submit this one to stream for feedback, happy drawing everyone!

Looking great! The concept is fantastic
About the lighting (I am an art newbie, so I guess it is more opinion than fact): The rock hovering in the middle seems to be lighted from the right side and from behind at the same time.

Thanks Julia! Good catch! I think I gotta rework the lighting on it. I want it to be like a transparent glowing crystal, so I think I'll need to study some reference on how the light will refract. Will repost over the week!

ahhh yeah knowing that it makes a lot more sense

13 days later

Some 3 point perspective practice. Just some simple blocks and tried to do different lighting setups

I really want to learn how to render better so I decided to do Part B of Photoshop 2 first!
Added some quick value practice as well  Did some colour picking and it seems I'm a few shades off when picking values by eye. I also found the metal ball difficult to replicate compared to the cubes especially the highlight areas - maybe I needed to spend more time/effort on this one!

Really like your last couple of perspective pieces, you really push that perspective to make for some really awesome angles and scenes. Keep at it!

Thank you! That means a lot to me! It's really satisfying when you get something dynamic
