  • Thank you! I finally cleaned that up. Meanwhile started 3 more ..I have a habit of taking too long to finish a piece, then I lose interest in it and just start something else. I found 8 from recently i started and abandoned, that are decent enough to not delete, but not finished. There’s also been a number of drawings I felt I “outgrew” - became better before I finished them, and it would be easier to start from scratch than fix them. Anyone else thinking that?

  • Lady Death Fanart Collectible: Part 6 Polypaint and base Hi, it’s time to share with you another part of the process to create this fanart piece. Polypaint As this is my first collectible fanart I didn’t have previous experience with polypaint so I tried my best and played a bit with it.I wanted to give a ghostly and eerie look to Lady Death, she is beautiful and deadly, but at the end of the day she is a woman that died and was reborn at hell as an avenging spirit, that’s why I gave her skin tone a bluish very cold tone.As you will see I gave myself some creative freedom to deviate from the traditional color scheme that this characater has in comics and illustrations.To add a bit of sensuality by painting some freckles on the face and the chest. The dark nature of this character was the perfect excuse to gave her a kind of goth make up, very dark shadows around the eyes, blue lips and fingernails. I know that the original character includes sexy red lips but I wanted this girl to have a sexy but at the same time creepy look, that’s why we can see some thin veins emanating from her eyes. The biggest chromatic change I did for this character is at the hair. Lady Death has a characteristic white weavy hair but in my fanart I decided to gave her a very saturated blue color.The reason behind this wasn’t only an aesthetic choice. I want that the face area strongly pulls the attention of the viewer so this area needed a stronger contrast. Another reason is that I want her to have a more modern look, as I mentioned before, I’m strongly attracted to women with goth/punk look. I gave myself half an hour or more to analyse the work of experienced sculptors that create collectibles and I discovered that the use of darker values on the skin is often applied to create a greater sense of volume and three-dimensionality. I found that areas with heavy ambient occlusion are the perfect places to paint with darker colors in order to increase the separation between different forms. Even though she has a bluish skin tone, I used a bit of warmer hues in areas that, in real life, tend to go towards red and pink, this is very obvious in the nose, cheeks, and knuckles. Thinking with a logical mind it’s completely absurd to have warmer tones on the body of a zombie like creature but I didn’t want to limit myself by using only blue tones, it looks boring and artificial. In real life these colors are created by blood vessels in areas where the skin is very thin. ** Scythe **for her weapon I applied a cool gray with some warmer variations, this color scheme is influenced by the work of H.R giger. Base I’d like to talk about the design for the base which, to be honest, I forgot to develop along with the character.My main idea with the base is to show that Lady Death inhabits a very sterile and arid land, at the end of the day she is at hell.You can see a that she walks over dirt and rocks, a sign that she’s surrounded by death and loneliness. As part of the landscape we can see some bones and skulls to reinforce the idea of lack of living creatures, yet we can see three hands that try to reach her legs.This hands represent that all creatures are subordinated to her power and seek an evil blessing with a simple touch of the princess of the damned.1- The hand with skin burns represents the souls of those who are newcomers to hell, tortured souls that suffer for the sins comitted on earth.2- The hand with greenish rotten skin and pustules is the reminder of the decay that has infected the souls of those who have been trapped and have forgotten their humanity3- Last but not least, the hand of a demon shows that even dark creatures and entities bow before her presence. The cherry on the top, at least in my vision, are the simese twins that emerge from the ground, this malevolent creatures remind us that in hell there’s only perversion and any trace of innocence is lost. Poses are from refs but I look at refs for a while and then try to do it myself and look it up if needed. It feels really nice I hope it stays this way A portrait of old dude. It's the same character I posted a while ago. Inspired by Bayard Wu work. At first I thought of him as a bear but I named him Fenrir and I think wolf suits him better. Eye gave me a bit of hard time but I think it is fine now. I focused on face and forgot about area below. The way I draw hair clashes with greying hair. I had the same problem while doing Lohse's white hair. Does it looks like it is greying here? I love how desaturated red looks blue there. I keep lying to myself that I will use different color scheme but It all comes down to this blue and yellowish one it is just flipped this time Have a great day!

Question for Clip Studio Paint people, how did you approach this one? The Photoshop clone source that Marc demonstrated in the video wasn't there, or at least wasn't there in the same way/a way I could make out, so I jury-rigged it with superimposed layers to get the sizes about right.

You can see some awkwardness (lighting angles were particularly different in the eyes between pics, leading to a bit of a Two-Face effect, older Harrison Ford's nose was at an angle the young one's wasn't), might try this again after the face liquify assignment but it went better than it could have.

Ended up awkward as well, but here's my attempt at the liquify exercise (I say this a lot but from what I saw in the video Photoshop and Clip Studio Paint liquify are very different beasts).

Posting what I've done so far of the nude figure drawing section to request help on the skeletons portion. My understanding is that the skeletons are supposed to have cylinders drawn over the limbs, as opposed to just sticks, so I did that (though I could use some pointers in getting the cylinders to work out quite right); is this correct? Also I'm using rectangles for the head/chest/pelvis skeleton, but this leads to awkwardness at angles, especially with the head and associated eyeline; is there anything particular I should be doing here? Once I'm drawing skeletons that aren't superimposed on references, am I to draw basic cubes/oblong spheres as opposed to simple squares/ovals? I thought the video said something to this effect but it didn't say much about that part of the assignment.

Hi wmcnugg! good practice! The main point of this exercise is to get used to seeing cylinders in space, drawing ellipses and looking for the contour of the cylinder. These may seem trivial now but constantly come back again and again through the program.

These look pretty good I would encourage you to draw your ellipses all the way through each one to get a good understanding of the exact angle of the ellipse. Take your time and I encourage you to decrease your brush size, it will expose more of the issues with the curve, a thicker size is more forgiving.

In regards to the boxes these look good, Don't worry to much about the boxes for now, they are meant to show you the planes that the body is facing, later on you will use this knowledge and perspective knowledge to make a mannequin that defines these better. But for now focus on the cylinders and the ellipses, it is the foundation for so much to come. Here is an example of my most recent cylinder practice that is not perfect but may provide some guidance. If you have any questions let me know.

I'll try using finer lines for the cylinders next attempt, meanwhile here's my second attempt done yesterday (so it still has overly thick cylinder lines), and also my second try at the proportions exercise. For the former I tried rounded head/torso/pelvis, especially for the head because of the aforementioned awkwardness of boxes at angles (someone else told me I was being terribly imprecise with the heads here).


Ultimate pretty minor but I have trouble getting the knees right for proportions, more broadly I'd say there's more off with the legs than the upper body here but that could still use some work

I also did 5 skeletons from imagination last night, awkward poses to be sure but I'd like to think I made a good first go at foreshortened forearms with the last two.

I suppose a little sketchiness from adjusting the drawing is going to happen but I'll try to improve on that. Meanwhile here's another attempt.

There are a few things that you might try with the gestures. Firstly know that I am also a beginner but these are things that helped me. The first thing I did was go through marc's old videos and look for student examples that I liked for gesture drawing. I screen captured them and saved them to desktop. I studied them, tried to understand what lines they made and which they didn't. I would pause after each 30 second pose I did and think to myself, what was successful and what wasn't. Then I would file that away for the next time. Slowly, very slowly they started to improve. You might also try mixing up your timer. I found as a complete beginner to get much out of 30 second drawings except for the energy of the pose which is helpful but I mostly do 2 minute poses now. But try mixing it up and see if that is more helpful. I absolutely hated gestures at first, so much because I was so bad at them. I am a completely new artist and I can make things look decent if I take an insane amount of time on them, so gesture was the complete opposite for me. I couldn't just make them better with more time. Mine looked soooo bad. Know that you are not alone. study someone to try to understand their choices and keep at it!

Hi there!! Peanut here..!

What I find helpful for my gestures is that I do it in three levels

Movement of the body (dynamism) > Proportions > Volume

Whether I finish with only the movement of the body + some small proportions or just dynamism only in the allotted time, I move on. The lesson here is to be expert in basics and be confident in your observation skills, especially in the proportion. Adding volumes (for me) is just icing in the cake, it is needed but not too important in gesture drawing.

Also, as a beginner you should allot more time, like 60 secs for dynamism + proportion and 2 min when adding volume. Speed is just the result of accumulating enough experience with anatomy and observation skills. Also, as I have said, developing your observation here is important so you can also limit your study for a few pose (5 images per day maybe..?)

I definitely feel more confident after my 1-minute gestures than my 30 second ones, I'll probably try some 2-minute ones (I figured 30 seconds for quick ones and 1 minute for a little more accuracy just because of the instructions).

Head on left I did from reference, head on right I did the day after using the head on left as a reference but trying a different angle. Naturally it didn't go so well.

How did you guys do at drawing heads? Not doing super great at this.

Heads are tough for sure. By far been the hardest thing for me so far. Here is my normal process for heads. I made this guide to help me and I still use it. I'm just about to the point now where I feel like I don't need it anymore. At the bottom I put a sheet for myself to show me what the ellipses should look like for common angles.
