  • Thank you! I finally cleaned that up. Meanwhile started 3 more ..I have a habit of taking too long to finish a piece, then I lose interest in it and just start something else. I found 8 from recently i started and abandoned, that are decent enough to not delete, but not finished. There’s also been a number of drawings I felt I “outgrew” - became better before I finished them, and it would be easier to start from scratch than fix them. Anyone else thinking that?
  • Lady Death Fanart Collectible: Part 6 Polypaint and base Hi, it’s time to share with you another part of the process to create this fanart piece. Polypaint As this is my first collectible fanart I didn’t have previous experience with polypaint so I tried my best and played a bit with it.I wanted to give a ghostly and eerie look to Lady Death, she is beautiful and deadly, but at the end of the day she is a woman that died and was reborn at hell as an avenging spirit, that’s why I gave her skin tone a bluish very cold tone.As you will see I gave myself some creative freedom to deviate from the traditional color scheme that this characater has in comics and illustrations. To add a bit of sensuality by painting some freckles on the face and the chest. The dark nature of this character was the perfect excuse to gave her a kind of goth make up, very dark shadows around the eyes, blue lips and fingernails. I know that the original character includes sexy red lips but I wanted this girl to have a sexy but at the same time creepy look, that’s why we can see some thin veins emanating from her eyes. The biggest chromatic change I did for this character is at the hair. Lady Death has a characteristic white weavy hair but in my fanart I decided to gave her a very saturated blue color. The reason behind this wasn’t only an aesthetic choice. I want that the face area strongly pulls the attention of the viewer so this area needed a stronger contrast. Another reason is that I want her to have a more modern look, as I mentioned before, I’m strongly attracted to women with goth/punk look. I gave myself half an hour or more to analyse the work of experienced sculptors that create collectibles and I discovered that the use of darker values on the skin is often applied to create a greater sense of volume and three-dimensionality. I found that areas with heavy ambient occlusion are the perfect places to paint with darker colors in order to increase the separation between different forms. Even though she has a bluish skin tone, I used a bit of warmer hues in areas that, in real life, tend to go towards red and pink, this is very obvious in the nose, cheeks, and knuckles. Thinking with a logical mind it’s completely absurd to have warmer tones on the body of a zombie like creature but I didn’t want to limit myself by using only blue tones, it looks boring and artificial. In real life these colors are created by blood vessels in areas where the skin is very thin. ** Scythe **for her weapon I applied a cool gray with some warmer variations, this color scheme is influenced by the work of H.R giger. Base I’d like to talk about the design for the base which, to be honest, I forgot to develop along with the character. My main idea with the base is to show that Lady Death inhabits a very sterile and arid land, at the end of the day she is at hell. You can see a that she walks over dirt and rocks, a sign that she’s surrounded by death and loneliness. As part of the landscape we can see some bones and skulls to reinforce the idea of lack of living creatures, yet we can see three hands that try to reach her legs. This hands represent that all creatures are subordinated to her power and seek an evil blessing with a simple touch of the princess of the damned.1- The hand with skin burns represents the souls of those who are newcomers to hell, tortured souls that suffer for the sins comitted on earth.2- The hand with greenish rotten skin and pustules is the reminder of the decay that has infected the souls of those who have been trapped and have forgotten their humanity3- Last but not least, the hand of a demon shows that even dark creatures and entities bow before her presence. The cherry on the top, at least in my vision, are the simese twins that emerge from the ground, this malevolent creatures remind us that in hell there’s only perversion and any trace of innocence is lost. Thanks for reading till this pointI’m really happy to be very close to finish this creative journey, last but not least it’s mandatory to talk about splitting the sculpture in several pieces to be printed, this will be my last entry before showing the final rendered images. See yaMay Zbrush be with you

Poses are from refs but I look at refs for a while and then try to do it myself and look it up if needed. Outfits and rest is from imagination Something went wrong while installing system so we will have to wipe everything again... pc works but something is wrong. We will wait till internet is done and I will save everything on cloud this time Threads came out in eu. It's been 3 days and I had more engagement than after half a year on instagram. It feels really nice I hope it stays this way A portrait of old dude. It's the same character I posted a while ago. Inspired by Bayard Wu work. At first I thought of him as a bear but I named him Fenrir and I think wolf suits him better. Eye gave me a bit of hard time but I think it is fine now. I focused on face and forgot about area below. The way I draw hair clashes with greying hair. I had the same problem while doing Lohse's white hair. Does it looks like it is greying here? I love how desaturated red looks blue there. I keep lying to myself that I will use different color scheme but It all comes down to this blue and yellowish one it is just flipped this time Have a great day!

Masked and ready for paint. Once these are done, I'll paint a small portrait of her. This one, the portrait and the previous sketches will make up my concept sheet.

I did close up her chest, as the hole didn't have any particular importance to her as a character. It made the top part of her dress look more sturdy, which I really liked. There will probably not be any more changes to her outfit from this point on, as the rendering is supposed to elevate the dress even further (it'll be glossy and reflective).

I'm not sure just how rendered it's meant to be, but there really isn't much more to her than this. The big illustration is quite a challenge, so I'm jumping between polishing my concept sheet and it, whenever it gets overwhelming.

Despite not making any sense, I decided that the see-through part of the dress would in fact not be as stiff as it looks. I suppose it would be possible to say that she'd be reshaping her dress constantly to make it seem soft, even thought it's meant to be made out of glass.

I enjoy painting her shoes.

This is pretty much the final illustration. Well, it will be.
I think I made the right call when creating the people stuck in her throne. It looks somewhat more like ice rather than glass, but I think this will make her stand out more. If the glass throne was more see-through, the people stuck in it would be too detailed and steal the show. Although, they kind of are anyways at the moment.

I'm jumping around a lot when working on this piece, since I only work on one layer (due to bad planning). Hopefully I'll be able to make it into what i want it to be.

I've been working mostly on the throne, since it will play a big part in showcasing her powers or well... the aftermath. Anyways, I think I'm getting the glass right and I'm actively looking to make it not look like ice.

So far I've been very surprised with how well it's been going. The color picking feels rather on point so far (I'll probably have to adjust it later, just in case) and the overall composition really speaks to me now.

There are three unfinished characters in the throne and once I'm done with those I'll move back to my villain. Adding another character in the center of the throne seems pointless, as that one will just end up being covered.

I ended up using an icecube as reference for the behaviour of glass. They should be behaving similarly, when not perfectly smooth.. I think?

Had a friend of mine (he's into writing) take a look at it. He suggested putting as much story as i could into the people within the glass, so I tried just that. I ended up doing a cheap move and made one of the characters a parent with a child. That usually makes the villain seem even more evil.

I don't know when I'll get to work on it again (probably 26/12 or something), so until then... Happy Holidays!

the throne turned out pretty epic
looking forward to see your next step
happy holidays!

Changed her pose.

I'm a little unsure about her left arm, but I like that she looks like she's about to get up from her throne. Her umbrella ended up being turned into it's mace-form and her dress still lack some of the decorations. The background still doesn't exist, since I have no clue as to what I want to put there.

And finally - her head.
I don't like or dislike her face right now. It just doesn't stand out to me in any way. She looks rather pretty though, so there's that. Her hair is still chunky and I might just keep it that way, albeit after some refining.

I'll probably crop the image once I'm done. There's a little bit too much of nothing above her.

One week left. Still doable.

To do list:
1. Light, Shadows and reflections.
2. Polish her throne.
3. Polish her dress and add the final components (some ornaments and the "glass" section)
4. Background
5. Final pass (correcting colors and values)
6. Turn in!

Honestly, I'm still surprised that I managed to get this piece this far. Low-key panicking now, as I realized that I might not be able to work as much on it as I'd like to during theses final days of Art War.

interesting idea, I look forward to the final

Your comment gives me strength!
(I too look forward to the final)

Very interesting concept. Her right leg/knee is not working though, it appears to be angled off away from her body, the more I look I think the right leg is off as well. In 3d terms you would want to rotate them around the y-axis to make them line up with her hips better. Just recheck it and I am sure you will see what I am talking about.

Keep at it! I look forward to seeing more of the rendering!

Shit, you're right. :scream:
I'd assume the leg should be twisted so that it faces the same direction as she is.
Good thing you pointed that out, as I was about to reach a point where fixing it would be difficult.

Glad to help, hope I see the changes, the forums are just so full of posts at this point it is quite the time investment to just try to keep up with it

The legs were a pain to paint over, although they do look a lot better now.
(Thank you for pointing that out, @PeterH)

The way the legs were positioned was also "wrong", so I had to change that too.
Other than the legs, I didn't do much more than that. I spent to much time idling and trying to find any useful reference images.

There isn't much left that I want to do before this piece is finished, but her dress is going to be a challenge. It's supposed to have a second layer on top, that will be pretty much transparent with a slight tint. I need to find that balance between see-through and solid, so that the dress won't lose too much of the already existing detail as it is covered by the another layer. (I have tried a couple of ideas, but most of them ended up ruining the dress beneath).

That's only now I'm noticing Superman is here xD
Also Jabba the Hutt if I'm correct, no ? haha

Haha, yes there is a generic hero in there (the superman aesthetic is generic, no?) and I'd assume that Hutt is the one beneath Supes? It's just some bearded guy (probably bald), but the slight similarity did make me chuckle.

I'm starting to have a hard time looking at it. I can't really tell what's missing and what isn't.
However, I do think that i'm very close to being finished with it.

Apparently the deadline was extended, but I don't feel like there's anything that I am capable of doing that would make this piece any better (without overworking it). As usual, I'm bad at being consistent when it comes to "style". She looks different in all images, but I'm still content with the end result.

I think I improved quite a lot over the course of this "event". I don't think I did well enough to snag a spot, but hey... it was fun.

Also, any critique and comments regarding how I could improve both the piece (although I won't make any more changes to it) and as an artist in general is always welcome.
