  • Thank you! I finally cleaned that up. Meanwhile started 3 more ..I have a habit of taking too long to finish a piece, then I lose interest in it and just start something else. I found 8 from recently i started and abandoned, that are decent enough to not delete, but not finished. There’s also been a number of drawings I felt I “outgrew” - became better before I finished them, and it would be easier to start from scratch than fix them. Anyone else thinking that?
  • Lady Death Fanart Collectible: Part 6 Polypaint and base Hi, it’s time to share with you another part of the process to create this fanart piece. Polypaint As this is my first collectible fanart I didn’t have previous experience with polypaint so I tried my best and played a bit with it.I wanted to give a ghostly and eerie look to Lady Death, she is beautiful and deadly, but at the end of the day she is a woman that died and was reborn at hell as an avenging spirit, that’s why I gave her skin tone a bluish very cold tone.As you will see I gave myself some creative freedom to deviate from the traditional color scheme that this characater has in comics and illustrations. To add a bit of sensuality by painting some freckles on the face and the chest. The dark nature of this character was the perfect excuse to gave her a kind of goth make up, very dark shadows around the eyes, blue lips and fingernails. I know that the original character includes sexy red lips but I wanted this girl to have a sexy but at the same time creepy look, that’s why we can see some thin veins emanating from her eyes. The biggest chromatic change I did for this character is at the hair. Lady Death has a characteristic white weavy hair but in my fanart I decided to gave her a very saturated blue color. The reason behind this wasn’t only an aesthetic choice. I want that the face area strongly pulls the attention of the viewer so this area needed a stronger contrast. Another reason is that I want her to have a more modern look, as I mentioned before, I’m strongly attracted to women with goth/punk look. I gave myself half an hour or more to analyse the work of experienced sculptors that create collectibles and I discovered that the use of darker values on the skin is often applied to create a greater sense of volume and three-dimensionality. I found that areas with heavy ambient occlusion are the perfect places to paint with darker colors in order to increase the separation between different forms. Even though she has a bluish skin tone, I used a bit of warmer hues in areas that, in real life, tend to go towards red and pink, this is very obvious in the nose, cheeks, and knuckles. Thinking with a logical mind it’s completely absurd to have warmer tones on the body of a zombie like creature but I didn’t want to limit myself by using only blue tones, it looks boring and artificial. In real life these colors are created by blood vessels in areas where the skin is very thin. ** Scythe **for her weapon I applied a cool gray with some warmer variations, this color scheme is influenced by the work of H.R giger. Base I’d like to talk about the design for the base which, to be honest, I forgot to develop along with the character. My main idea with the base is to show that Lady Death inhabits a very sterile and arid land, at the end of the day she is at hell. You can see a that she walks over dirt and rocks, a sign that she’s surrounded by death and loneliness. As part of the landscape we can see some bones and skulls to reinforce the idea of lack of living creatures, yet we can see three hands that try to reach her legs. This hands represent that all creatures are subordinated to her power and seek an evil blessing with a simple touch of the princess of the damned.1- The hand with skin burns represents the souls of those who are newcomers to hell, tortured souls that suffer for the sins comitted on earth.2- The hand with greenish rotten skin and pustules is the reminder of the decay that has infected the souls of those who have been trapped and have forgotten their humanity3- Last but not least, the hand of a demon shows that even dark creatures and entities bow before her presence. The cherry on the top, at least in my vision, are the simese twins that emerge from the ground, this malevolent creatures remind us that in hell there’s only perversion and any trace of innocence is lost. Thanks for reading till this pointI’m really happy to be very close to finish this creative journey, last but not least it’s mandatory to talk about splitting the sculpture in several pieces to be printed, this will be my last entry before showing the final rendered images. See yaMay Zbrush be with you

  • Thank you @daceronine! If I remember I save in google cloud, I will have to stick a note to do it more often. Lamp is from life. Poses are from refs but I look at refs for a while and then try to do it myself and look it up if needed. Outfits and rest is from imagination Something went wrong while installing system so we will have to wipe everything again... pc works but something is wrong. We will wait till internet is done and I will save everything on cloud this time Threads came out in eu. It's been 3 days and I had more engagement than after half a year on instagram. It feels really nice I hope it stays this way A portrait of old dude. It's the same character I posted a while ago. Inspired by Bayard Wu work. At first I thought of him as a bear but I named him Fenrir and I think wolf suits him better. Eye gave me a bit of hard time but I think it is fine now. I focused on face and forgot about area below. The way I draw hair clashes with greying hair. I had the same problem while doing Lohse's white hair. Does it looks like it is greying here? I love how desaturated red looks blue there. I keep lying to myself that I will use different color scheme but It all comes down to this blue and yellowish one it is just flipped this time Have a great day!

I participated in the Art War last year and decided to take part again this year. I'm aiming to create a better illustration this year.

Name: Juho Kilpeläinen
Email:blm_370(at)hotmail.com
Artstation: https://www.artstation.com/jkilpelainen

Name: Elena "Spark" Yurakina
Occupation: Specialist Assault Magus.
Alliance: Volt Bloc (Armed Forces)
Powers: Electricity manipulation, Electricity channeling, spell casting, reflex and muscle response boosting.

I've been thinking about the contest for a while now. I had only vague ideas about possible character concepts and what element to choose. So I decided to think about the setting for the characters instead as a starting point.

I chose to interpret War of the Elements pretty literally. Four nations/alliances that are in a state of cold war. Border disputes, conflict over territory and resources as well as ideology are constant sources of friction. Alliances between the nations occur but these are unstable and short-lived in nature. All the nations have modern high-tech armies. Magic and element manipulation in particular is commonly used. Most militaries are composed of conventional armed forces + specialist magic wielding units. Tonally, I ended up thinking about the setting a bit like if it was for a miniature war game like Warhammer 40k or Infinity.

I wrote ideas about the nations in the form of bullet points that I could use while thumbnailing potential character concepts. The nations I thought about were the following.

Magma Union
A union of several city states united by trade and defense. Most of their territory is volcanic and mountainous, although they also have fertile plains. They focus on using magma manipulation and pyromancy. They also commonly use thermobaric and flame-based weaponry and their doctrine favours speed and aggression.

Whirpool Alliance
An alliance formed out of a multitude of islands and their settlements. There are some larger land masses, but their territory is mostly composed of small islands, reefs and atolls. The alliance consists of many disparate factions and groups that are united by many treaties and cooperation against external threats. Their navy is powerful, but their land forces are relatively small. The alliance utilizes both hydro- and cryokinesis. These are also utilized in more conventional weaponry. The alliance prefers evasion and taking full advantage of their mostly oceanic territory.

Granite Dominion
A militaristic unified state dominated by a struggle between isolationists and expansionists. Their territory is heavily mountainous, which means they have only limited farmland. They have a strong army and utilize ferro- and geokinesis as well as crystal manipulation to strengthen them even further. The Dominion prefers heavy armour and although they are not most mobile of armies they can use natural obstacles and chokepoints to great effect to mitigate this disadvantage in their home territory.

Volt Bloc
A recently formed aggressive unitary state. Currently acting highly belligerent towards their neighbors. Their territory is hot, humid and stormy and dominated by mountains, plateaus and lush jungle valleys. The Bloc uses electrokinesis and electromagnetism with their equipment focusing on supercharging these even more. Their conventional forces are relatively small but they wield a large variety of unconventional and irregular units.

Besides this I figured there would also be smaller polities, NGO's and other groups being used by the major nations or pursuing their own agendas. The major nations have only limited direct borders with each other.

After the first thumbnails I selected few concepts for further refinement. I wound up favouring water and lightning over fire and earth in these thumbnails.

Further refinement of thumbnails. By this point I chose to just focus on either water or lightning. Both had concepts I liked but I wanted to work on them in a bit more detail before choosing what to use in the final entry. For water the concepts were a hydrocutter samurai, a Cryogrenadier and a water elementalist. For lightning the chosen concepts were a electromagnetic steel ball wielder, a shockblade warrior and a lightning magus. I decided to focus more in the direction of either the shockblade warrior or lightning magus, which are on the second and third row of the lightning side on the thumbnail sheet.

Reference sheets for the character. I had done some preliminary research for references, but I wanted to wait until I had narrowed down the concept before making actual reference sheets. These are primarily to help with the textures and structure.

10 days later

Submission update. I've been working on figuring out my hero since the last post and wanted to nail the character down before posting a progress update.

Face and equipment studies. I needed to work on figuring what kind of face I would like the character to have. After deciding on the type of character I experimented on various mixtures of wetsuit, raincoat and load bearing equipment. I was looking for a mixture of militaristic and casual, since the character is meant to be an irregular specialist member of Volt Bloc armed forces. I wound up using elements from both concepts I chose. I kept the equipment studies small so as to not get stuck on details.

Further studies to refine the concept. I already had a good idea for the majority of the character design but I needed to work on the character's arms, legs and backpack. For the character's face I went with one from around the middle of the lower row. It just resonated the most with me. I did some colour experiments since I wanted to have a low-key punk/goth vibe. Due to time constraints I opted to not do a full-size turnaround, but instead did a front/back pose to nail down the major details of the character design. I had been thinking about going with a yellow raincoat or at least yellow accents once I narrowed down the concept. I went with a mixture of purple hair and yellow raincoat for the majour colours of the character with the rest a mixture of bluish greys. Camo or greens would be more realistic for the colours, but that is not a major concern in this case since the brief is to design a hero. I changed the swords from longer blades to shorter machete-type blades at this point of the process.

Further studies for the blades and mook soldiers. Less detail on both since the intent is to be more generic with these. I chose the Granite Dominion as the opponent for the illustration since I envisioned them as the most conventionally militaristic of the four factions.

I did some very rough pencil compositions, but the ones on this sheet are the ones where I start on narrowing down on the composition for the final illustration. The hero is capable of channeling electricity through her blades and using electricity to quicken both her reflexes and muscles. The scene is her assaulting some unfortunate Granite Dominion soldiers.

Illustration update, with lineart I'll be using as the base for the final illustration. I feel the most comfortable when I have a nice drawing as a base.

The hero in particular has some complex foreshortening and other elements so I decided to use Art Pose Pro for pose reference. The hero might not be positioned in the most practical way, but I wanted to emphasize coolness in the illustration.

The final illustration for my hero. The scene is an attack on an Granite Dominion checkpoint on the outskirts of an occupied city by my hero. I finally settled on a name for the character. They are Elena "Spark" Yurakina, a specialist assault magus of the Volt Bloc Armed Forces. She can channel electricity through her blades and use it for other purposes like increasing her reflexes and muscle response. Elena wears a battery backpack that allows her to further increase the power of her attacks. She can use her electricity powers without it, but similar backpacks are commonly used by Volt Bloc operatives to provide a ready source of electricity.
